I think it'd be pretty cool if there were true customization to the ship (whatever the ship turns out to be) and not just the "upgrades" from ME2 that were pre-selected, gave you no options (it was take it or leave it), and weren't visually noticeable except for their absence in the suicide mission if you didn't get them.

I'd like to be able to select different types of upgrades/additions to the ship from a wide array of piece-meal possibilities, a little bit like the approach to personal armor in ME1 and DAI. And, the selections you make for these additions/upgrades would come at a cost, so your decisions would have to be strategic. For instance, say I want to upgrade or add some big ass guns to my ship. I'm at some outpost shop or salvage yard, and I can choose between several different types of guns, each with different specifications.

I go with the Thannix 12 "Widowmaker" cannons (I'm just making names up here) because they have greater punch and armor piercing, but, selecting those means I can't upgrade to certain new engines because of the power required for the guns. Or, I upgrade to some bad ass armor, but it's so heavy that it limits my manuverability, etc. There should be a strategic trade-off for the specific upgrades I select.

Also, I'd like my upgrades/additions to visibly and dramatically alter the appearance of my ship. If I get some huge monster guns, I want to see them. Or, if I upgrade my armor, I want to see that too. That way, my ship is more personal to me in both visuals and performance. Everyone's ship is different and its performance has various effects on gameplay (winning or losing a battle, lives saved/lost, ability to get access certain planets, etc).

I'm thinking mainly exterior upgrades but it would also be cool if something similar could be done to the interior. Of course, I don't actually expect any of this to be in the game, just wishing on a star.

Anyway, just my two cents.

Well maybe he didn't start out as the captain but something happened to the captain along the way. So you could still be in charge but deal with dissent as well. Instead of being able to charm/intimidate everyone into doing what you want a la Shepard maybe you have to manage crew relations as well as the tech stuff with both influencing each other.

Maybe you're space Jon Snow :P Saw the GoT thread. The comparison is laughable at best.

Er, just realized I may have opened a can of worms. If this derails into GoT discussion I haven't read the books, please no spoilers.

Maybe, but my impression from the leak was that the Pathfinder Initiative indicated a squadron of scout ships sent ahead of the Ark or whatever to search for habitable worlds. Our character would be the captain of one of those ships.

If this "Ark" Theory is true, i'm pretty sure the space ship we pilot isn't the ark. I'd actually really love it if it were a small ship thats comfy for a small crew and yet confined, something Millennium Falcon/The guardians of the galaxy ship esque. I mean really.. we don't need a mini bar lol

I'd like to be given the possibility of a space walk, just like the astronauts, for repairs or any other activities that make sense. Being able to walk on the hull of your ship and look up into the cosmos/up to the stars/down on the planet the ship orbits would give a better impression that you are actually inside a space vessel than in the ME trilogy. From time to time i felt like walking through a multiple story building rather than a spaceship.

A diverse and interactive npc crew, Quarians, Salarians, Turians, yada yada yada, all filling the various onboard roles. I'd like an overly emotional Krogan cook and a physically hostile asari mechanic and a blind salarian comm specialist, and uh... dysfunction< I guess that's what I'm getting at, I don't want a bunch of uber-professionals who never !@#$ anything up. Give them vivid personalities, screen time, and some effect however small on the story. The few interactions we had with Donnelly, Daniels, whatever that dink who returned in me3 name was, all could have been fleshed out more.

Thanix missiles made no sense. Missiles based on the Reaper lasers, I mean, what the actual f*ck, how does that even work?

This is something made up by someone who doesn't played the first two games, like the guys who wrote the endings.

Yeah I would like a semi-flawed bunch of personalities as well, ME1 was a bit sterile with squadmates but ME2 added a lot simply by putting them through the failure ringer.

What needs to be on the Tempest?

A model of a reaper, maybe Harbinger, in the main character's cabin.

Until we have perfect text to speech + voice imitating software, naming things that have to be referenced by voiced characters just will not happen.
I wouldn't want all NPCs in the game to dodge around saying the ships name, like the did with Shepard's first name in the trilogy.

Uh ... btw, wasn't there a thread like this before? I remember one with a lot more posts in it. Where did that go?

Well, it's easier to dodge than the protagonist's (take DAO mabari, for example). I think Normandy was not mentioned that frequently. But a named ship has its perks, players grow attached to it more than to some arbitrary vessel with a name "DICKTATOR" (I'm sure there will be worse names if it was possible) :D

Tempest.

Okay, it might be a bit common in the BW universe due to the Tempest specialisation, lightning power, etc, but I always found that word interesting. When I think of Tempest, I think lightning fast. So maybe we'll have a state-of-the-art ship like the Normandy SR2.

Also, I'd like it if we can actually access the whole ship, and have every room some sort of need. It was sad how in ME3, that dry room Thane used to occupy is just there and how you can't access the bathrooms anymore. I always loved hearing EDI say "Shepard, the mens restroom is on the starboard side of the ship."

But yes, I'd love the ship to feel more like "home". Have some lounge areas or some common place to relax. I don't mean just one or two rooms. I want a nice big place. Hell, you might as well add a mini Purgatory or Afterlife club in the ship.

I support observation desks. Maybe you can control what you want to see with simulated planets, the citadel, or just space. I'm already picturing a scene...
"I miss Rannoch. I loved watching the sunset when I was a kid."
"*Uses controls to change view-settings to a simulation of a sunset in Rannoch*"
"Aww, thanks. It's beautiful~"

It's not a room or object, but I always missed the Normandy theme from ME1, so I'd like another cool background tune while we're on the ship.

No.That's just you guys not knowing the lore. The Reaper main gun is a magnetic-hydro-dynamic cannon, it fires a stream of molten metal (uranium-tungsten-iron alloy) accelerated at a fraction of the speed of light. They're not "lazorz", although capital ships could also have GARDIAN type defenses on their hull (those are the actual lasers). The Thanix is based on the main gun's tech and missiles could be rigged to release the stream of metal on impact just like current day cone-shaped anti-tank rounds. These things fire a stream of molten copper that burns through tank armor like a hot knife through butter.

The writer's mistake would be that they did not explain the tech in some codex entry like with all other weapons. Hell, even the crapiest pistol has a description. But  the game feels very rushed post Thessia, so no surprise here.

It feels to me as if developers at large are consciously shifting wayward of consistent ambient tracks in games. I've noticed it elsewhere, too. I feel like it's a hopeless cause, this one, but I'm with you 'til the end.

@Vazgen: I definitely prefer a pre-named ship, mostly for the argument you mentioned. In the trilogy, the Normandy is basically a character of it's own as well as a place, you and your team can call home. And I would dispute that it is not mentioned often. How often do they say stuff like "Let's get back to the Normandy" or call it in tough situations ("Normandy, come in!!!")? Heck, in the beginning of ME2, when they get the SR2, it is a very powerful moment when they name it. Shepard just got back from the dead, s/he is out in cold water, lost the old team, has to work with people s/he cannot trust. I, as a player, felt pretty lost there. Than Joker comes along and naming the ship, that we get from TIM "Normandy" does a lot to make it "my ship" and to give me back the hope that maybe, I haven't lost everything.

I don't think that would have worked if a text window to input my stupid own name would have popped up, just so that everyone can then call it "the ship".

Although, maybe, we can get them to call the new ship "DICKTATOR" by default. Then we both win. :D

Well they still have time to change things around. I think the biggest thing they want to make sure works is the setting change.

Beyond that my vote is still for the ark iself with options to pilot smaller ships when appropriate.

Citadel DLC gave us a lot of options to customize our apartement. Maybe that's what they aim for ME4 and our new ship, too?

Yeah, and in some cases I suppose it's fitting, but the music really gave Mass Effect a nice atmosphere. I think ME is one series where they should (imo) keep it musical.

After lengthy consideration, all crew members will sing sea shanties while the vessel is in flight.

Yah, I don't really like the Tempest either...   Maybe it'll grow on me.   But...  For now, I just really don't like it.   Makes me think of a Lamborghini or a Ferrari.  Just kind'a...   Ehhh.  Too flashy and spectacular and fabulous.

It's not like I loved Normandy when I first saw it though, either.  I can remember saying to myself, "Normandy....    Uhhh, okay...   I realize I'm supposed to feel something here."   After playing through the entire game once, I was bawling.   Same with the beginning of ME3.  Weird how things change, no?

But, "Let's get back to the Tempest..."  I dunno man, I just can't see it.

It was already mentioned but i think it deserves reapeating: a well-equipped scientific compartment/laboratory on board would be great.

As i understand, a large part of the next game will be about exploring new worlds. Therefore, naturally it would be quite exciting to take a closer look at things we would potentially bring back to the ship. The player could for example be given the opportunity to experiment on some artifacts and randomly make some discoveries - from simple upgrades to maybe hidden symbols containing locations of further mysteries etc.

Having crew members walk into the laboratory and have a chat with the chief scientists - and the player - about all the wonderous things being found and being able to watch them doing their own experimentation(with possibilities for some funny comments, suprising events etc) would add a lot to the game's athmosphere and immersion.

Thinking about the topic at hand i suddenly realized that since ME2 Normandy for me was basically a living entity represented by EDI and i probably would really miss a similar connection to the ship in the next ME. It doesn't have to be an AI this time, but i think someone or something should be representing the ship, being THE voice you would refer to when thinking of the Tempest, as EDI was doing for Normandy.

Yeah, I am hoping we do not get a Normandy ship 3.0 (see what I did there). A ship with enough space for your ground team and a handful of non-party members that can be interacted with instead of non-interactable npc's.

You just described Normandy 1.0, which was really small and fairly boring, imo. Cerberus Normandy was quite an improvement as it finally became a ship that was looking like it could enable long operations in all sorts of hostile territories without letting the crew sleep on the floor for days and weeks.

They could just have someone steal the ark turned prison ship from the second game and improve it.
