... the word "hello", which - counter to the OP- seems to have originated as an expression used to call attention to something.

Good points, but technical matters aside, there is the entirely subjective matter of verisimilitude. Alistair says it with the modern spin of "Helll-loo-ooo?"

But I do remember old Sherlock Holmes movies in which Basil Rathbone would say "Hello?" in the sense of "what is this?" or "what have we here?"

The "epic fail" line cracked me up the first time I heard that, too. The rest of their lines were great, as well. But that line in specific was a laugh at loud moment. :)

Any mention of Joss Wheadon has a kind of Godwin's Law-like effect on internet forums.

the "...ignominiously slain! Epic Fail!" was in for a good and very loud laughter but only from the Harrowmont point of view.

In one village there's a graveyard which is accessible after you complete the main quest in that location. The inscriptions on the headstones are really, really hilarious. My wife and I were laughing out loud for quite a while as I explored the graveyard looking at the inscriptions.

Check out the spoiler forums for exact details on which village to find it in.

Yeah, the graveyard thing is always good fun. It has been a classic in fantasy Bioware games since Baldur's Gate, I believe.

I guess that really goes to show how a seemingly minor point can effect people differently.   Not only did it ****** me off enough to make me stop playing DA for a day, it made me wonder who inn their right mind wrote it, and more importantly who approved it.   It is by far the most disingenuous, low-browed idiocy in the game. As far as I am concerned, adding something like that is as retarded as adding genlocks that screaming "LOL PWNED! NOOB!" so 12 year-olds can laugh and tell their friends how 1337 the game is.

Does that come across as harsh? How about "Easily one of the ten worst moments in video games this decade"?

Yes. It bugged me that much.

Well Bhelen failed epically, so the cryer saying "epic fail" isn't that strange in the context of the game.

Sten going on about how the cake was a lie however, was pretty annoying.

Those are indeed out-of-game references... but we've never been above using those. Not in BG, and not in DA. Some people may not like them... but meh. *shrug*

I love how the "it's just a fantasy!" argument was used by many posters
here against the OP. Yet in a thread about say..skin color of
npc's...realism must rule the day.

Not compaining, just pointing
it out. I just  find forums fascinating as entities and the way in
which they offer  insight into how people use their own biases to formulate arguments. You learn can learn a lot, assuming you don't go crazy first. (It's probably too late for me )

You can't expect fantasy game with 30 seconds to mars as background music in its trailer to be completely serious...

The only one that actually made me wince was someone saying they would call someone else. I have a feeling it might have been one of Zevran's attack dialogue lines. I managed to add a lot of vague to this post. :P

I look at dialog to covey meaning and intent. You look at something like Deadwood which has brilliant dialog but it is 100% an anachronism - no one swore like they. They swore but in 19th century phrases that, to our ears, would not carry the same weight. The modern profanity captured the crudity of the characters for us in a way "authentic" dialog wouldn't. As long as the tone is consistent I don't think, short of constantly referencing current culture, "anachronism " is fine.

As others have pointed out, they wouldn't be speaking English at all, so we can just assume that what they say is translated into modern English for our benefit...though current slang is inappropriate. Of the examples here, the only word that really breaks immersion for me is the word genetic...modern scientific concepts seem out of place here. There were one or two other things that struck me that way, but I can't think what they were right now.

The only problem with the lamppost in winter line is that though they certainly would have lamps, any posts would likely be wood. Metal was way too expensive...and one thing I do appreciate is that the game's economics are relatively plausible. I always thought it was hilarious in D&D-based games when people would wander into a store and spend thousands of gold pieces...yes, I just happen to be carrying a hundred kilos of gold in my backpack.

Eh, I don't think having a wildey varied array of technology is all that weird in a world where Blights wipe out civilizations every couple hundreds of years. The technological level is probably constantly restarting and having bits and pieces of past eras surviving.

Personally for someone living outside of America, seeing Americanisms in video games, particularly those in a fantasy setting, really irks me. I hate when characters say "write me" instead of "write to me" or "I could care less" instead of "I couldn't care less". Hello? is definitely one of those cases, and I'm pretty sure 'write me' is in dragon age somwhere too.

I actually really like the odd pop culture reference though... epic fail made me chuckle, as did when the warden has the option of saying "aren't you a bit small for a guard" to the queen when they disguise themselves as guards - it's a fine line and I think Bioware got it spot on.

I think that a few anachronistic expressions and out-of-game references are fine in a fantasy game as long is it is not overdone. I think Bioware got the balance right. When I heard that crier say "epic fail" I thought it was hilarious and I still chuckle when Zevran says our party is "ridiculously awesome." Everyone has a different opinion/perception and it seems you can't please everyone.

That conversation at Lake Calenhad was my favorite.

"Epic Fail." isn't that bad.  It was an epic failure, the expression was condensed to make it more poignant, thus entertaining.  Its only a slight stretch, and is a humorous reference.  Lol pwnage, would be an outrage.

I never saw this graveyard that was mentioned.......

The cake is a lie was great as well.  Especially considering his cookie fetish...  He defends the joke by saying he was told there would be cake!  It's awesome.  Search your feelings.... you know this to be true.

I don't mind a bit of anachronistic slang, but it's the anachronistic ideas. The one language thing that always annoys me is when Leliana says, "So inappropriate!"

Overall, there seems to be a bit of an overly modern slant to people's thinking. I guess that's true in all fantasy fiction, but I'd love to have seen Dragon Age take on a very immediate-post-plague Europe mentality. The reason for this period in particular (or the Dark Ages would work) is that sexism and racism are too big of obstacles toward an enjoyable game, and they were not big factors in those time periods.

Also, "have fun storming the castle" "tear his arm off" the thing with the ashes' temple resembling Indiana Jones, and I can't remember more but I've seen a lot of references to movies and other kind of memes...

And I like them a lot : P Maybe when one is more involved with this kind of jokes it's more easy to accept them and find them funny
