Rise in quality? Do people really think that?

Just like the rise in quality DLC has brought to the industry?

I want to pat them on the head for their naivety except it's the reason the gaming industry is riddled with nickle and diming and mobile cash cows.

The rising prominence of smart phones (and tablets later on) around the time the iPhone was introduced gave rise to mobile cash cows, not DLC.

How many people are going to pirate mods now?

I mean what the actual hell is happening.

Excuse me I need to go make sure I need to go move to Tatooine or something to think on this.

Thanks for the vid. I'm interested on his take on the subject seeing as I've checked his videos before for modding Skyrim. I'll try to get around to watching it later tonight.

Oh I see I explained myself poorly again. I know that's not why mobile cash cows exist (though if you don't like it just don't buy it isn't advice much of a help when most of the whales are a small segment of the gaming population) they're a product of good psychological pummeling. But time and time again we give an inch they take a mile.

Edit: at this point I'm at the "screw it" phase. Any company that does the paid mods thing can be bought during a sale for cheap. Yay for amazon.

I feel like we should all send Gabe a letter that just says:

You were the chosen one

It was said that you would destroy the greedy, not join them.

Bring balance to PC gaming, not leave it in darkness

Luz.

Completely unrelated, when did you jump on the D&D hypetrain, wolf. That's a much bigger cash cow, if I've ever seen one.

Bethesda embracing microtransactions and not even wanting to work for them *smh*

Given that they've outsourced bug fixes to modders I suppose outsourcing DLC and microtransactions to them was the next logical step?

It's smart business, valvedrones gamers love working for free or even investing without actually getting a part.

Just look at Early Access.

I'm just surprised this has gone so far.

It'd be like if book publishers started monetising fan fiction. People wouldn't put up with that. Yet gamers are all too happy to be reamed up the ass time and time again.

I get that AAA development costs are rising, but it's not my job to balance their budgets. The fact that they're spending hundreds of millions, half on marketing, for the chance to make megabucks is not my concern.

Japanese devs seem to be the only ones who understand budgeting for their market rather than investing oodles of money, relying on killer sales to recoup costs. And gamers are suffering for their irresponsibility.

Gabe is smart, he knows gamers are all talk. He's so sure of it that he's basically flaunting it in our face, and come next week he'll be proven right.

Proven right with what? For most mod authors, the paywall is anathema to their philosophy, but more importantly, precludes the production of mods because of all the permission and fair use problems. It won't work.

Even if this survives (that is not a given yet), look at what happened with Evolve post-release, and what happens with pretty much every industry. You can't dissatisfy people so resoundingly with no consequences. People do respond and not in the ways that executives generally prefer. There will always be people who will throw money at everything, but the more games there are that charge more money, the less those game companies will be able to make unless they offer tremendous products or maintain brand loyalty somehow.

If gabe died today and went to hell he could afford to purchase heaven and hell both and have money left over to keep steams future safe through at least 5 more colloussal customer revolts. He has more money than he can imagine knowing what to do with and took a leap of faith. You might say it didn't work this time, maybe it will, maybe it won't, but this has damaged the whole social structure of collaborative modding irreparably probably. If it fails this time, they can just wait a while until we all forget and reintroduce it in a much more insidious and subtle way.

It's unethical. But there are no laws against monetisation of mods.

Nope. Unless if they're unfringing on copyright. Perfectly legal. As long as they have the consent of the mod makers it's perfectly legal (on Steam's side)

Is this only Skyrim? Or does Steam plans to do this with other games as well. Because now I'm worrying about GTA V

So far only Skyrim, but you can bet your ass Valve will attempt to monetise any and every game with a vibrant modding community that require Steam for access to their game.

Skyrim/Bethesda has clout, influence, a massive modding community and is also a good test case because it's already an old game which has couped it's development costs several times over.

There's little risk, but if people accept it, it paves the way for other studios and modders to do the same.

Here is a Space Engineers dev basically confirming it. This is the future and it looks like it is here to stay. Well, I know what game I won't be spending my money on in the future. Now excuse me while I go update my Steam Wishlist...
