Ever considered that Bethesda may have done this to recoup their losses from The Elder Scrolls Online which failed miserably?

ESO was Zenimax, not Bethesda.

It's that simple.  This is how the world works.  When an opportunity for someone to make money presents itself, someone will take it.  It's not an outrage, it isn't a scandal, it's business.

It's really dumb business. We'll all see how this train wreck comes screeching to a halt soon enough, but the biggest loser here is Bethesda. Once the flagship leader in the modding community, now they've pissed all over the fans and modders. I can't wait to see other devs touting their mods as free now, it's gonna be fukkin hilarious. Beth and Valve will look like tools.

Not all. While this model may be a poor one, I am willing to pay for quality mods at affordable prices. Also wish I had the skill set to produce such mods, as doing something one loves and being able to make a living from it would have been a dream come true.

A donate button would have solved this nicely. Now you get to pay Beth and Valve twice...and for what exactly? They aren't even bothering with QA for the content you download.

I don't see any reason to think about that. I'm paying for the mod. Either I think it's worth the price, or I don't; if I'm paying, I think it is worth it, obviously. How that money gets divided up isn't my problem; by signing on with the paid mod program, the modders have accepted the terms, and I don't see how second-guessing them helps anyone.

Well that's a wonderfully corporate way to see things. I'm sure the guys who completely redesigned TW1 or offered me a skip the fade mod in DA:O would totally agree.

I mean for christ sakes if the point is to offer money to modders, lets do that. I'm not against the idea. Beth and Valve do not need such a large cut.

I gather they're hoping for a frog in kettle experience by which, after a period of adjustment, we'll all just swallow it like some people did five dollar ammo clips.

And I hope for a hard crash and burn.

I miss the days when modding was for a hobby or as a platform to express yourself and be creative with a game's engine.

Half of the modding community is still like this but for the other half it's serious business. That includes fans of mods who I have seen being so often ungrateful to all the free content they were getting for so long. I dabbled with modding for a year a long time ago but I wasn't good at it, I never released anything either (I just messed around in NWN's toolset and the Source engine - trying to learn how to mod in each) but in that time I learnt of the hard work that goes into not just mods but the development of games themselves.

Still this is nothing but a kick in the nuts to gamers everywhere but not just them but the modders too who aren't getting a very good deal, donations would work better if they need funding and would probably be even more beneficial to the modder with platforms like Patreon. Here, the modders and players are both getting scammed so I don't see how any of it is justifiable. It's just Bethesda and Valve trying to make even more money but the gaming community doesn't need to accept it. Just don't buy any of the paid mods and watch this system drop.

If they didn't agree with the Bethesda/Valve cut then they just wouldn't sign up for the paid mod program. Leaving them exactly where they were a week ago.

Of course they'll sign up. Any cash is better than none. I'm going to like totally borrow some code and sign up myself. Why not? Free Cash!

I thought I knew how much content theft to expect as a result of this. I was not prepared.

So what's the problem? They want cash, they're getting it.

They aren't going to flush 3+ years of planning down the drain for any amount of backlash.

To be honest I've never really modded any of my games so it doesn't really affect me at all. On the other hand, I understand a lot of people really like mods and this seems to go against the spirit of mods as a community inspired product.

I'll never really understand stuff like this... just like those people that out of sheer independent desire translated all of Type-0 only to be hit with a cease and desist... ah well.

Yep. Your point? If the split doesn't bother them, why should it bother anyone else?

Edit: this is turning into one of those weird threads, isn't it.

Yeah the guy has some interesting points and since he mentions Counter Strike it is interesting to note that it started off as a mod by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess "Cliffe" Cliffe in 1999 and has been credited with one of the reasons that Half Life sold so well since you had to own a copy of Half Life in order to play Counter Strike.  The were later employed by Valve but are no longer there.

Everytime Valve does something from here on out and it has nothing to do with Half Life 3 somebody should be hired to find and slap Gabe silly.
