I've said all along Gaben was a greater evil. You didn't listen and now it's too late. It's happening.

Access Games knew too which is why Gaben is the antagonist in their game Deadly Premonition.

Again, the Gaben taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the profits of the industry and the glory of them;

And saith unto him, all these things will I give thee, if thou will fall down and subit thou mods to me.

The irony is that I was about to replay Skyrim and I was on the hunt for the perfect combination of mods. On the plus side, this makes my job somewhat easier.

Day 1 Paid Mods.

Actually I think the direction will be paying for modding licenses where the eventual result is modders being used as a kind of subcontractor. Cheap labour.

God help me if it happens. Industry crash when? AAA gaming is too bloated, too arrogant and too greedy not to stop themselves.

Oh please, if anything it'll probably come from the Indie side of things. After all, they're the ones using steam the most to promote themselves/hold the most user sway.

They don't have the sway to really make it happen. But I wouldn't argue Depression Quest 2 would attempt to monetise mods if it were ever possible.

but here is another perspective on this thing.

- I think this would encourage publishing of tool-kits with games if it successful. Which is good for the lifespan of a product. A good example is neverwinter nights. If there is ever a modding community success story it should be that one. People are still making modules tilll this day, to the point of reverse engineering the tools and expanding on the product. The community is live and well(although they do need to practice on their C++) but it is great seeing people publish content on a toolkit released years ago.

One the other hand there is also abuse of the system which is inevitable.

Apologies, but I couldn't resist the urge to mock the beliefs behind statements like that.

Entitled people ruin everything! If they don't have the skills to make their own mod, or if they don't have the money to buy one then they should stop whining and take responsibility for being worthless to society!

It's a good thing Valve has decided to put an end to the communist-socialist community that modders have set up! It's disgraceful that this has been able to go on for decades without good respectable companies deciding that it's better to make money off of modding instead of allowing it to stay as an entitlement program! Now that money is involved modders will now create brilliant works of art that they were never able to make before because no one was paying their hard work! Valve should also not regulate the sale of any of the mods, because as we all know, regulation stifles creativity!!!

tbh when I read an article or a post talking about entitlement it just smacks of elitism. Thing is, I'm pretty poor, lot's of gamers are. I'm at the point where I get most of my games a year behind, just so I can get a complete game at an affordable price. I read a post on the steam forums earlier that said "Gaming is turning into a rich-man's hobby only" or something to that effect, and it really feels that way sometimes. If this is the way the industry keeps heading, then I might just go into the mountains, stick to emulators, and pray for a crash.

Anyway, free mods may not benefit individual modders monetarily but they benefit the community and the quality of mods imo. What this race to monetization is going to leave behind is a mod community that can't and won't share assets. Besides, if they actually play the game and other mods they'll end up spending their income on paid mods too. Maybe this will end up a story like the goose who laid the golden egg. By wanting to cash in on mods, maybe Valve and Bethesda will end up killing what made mods appealing in the first place.

Man.  Gaming is becoming a hassle.  I like the idea of a modder gaining money from their work that they put in, but there are too many variables in regards to points already made in the thread - what if someone wants to re-skin it and sell it for less, etc, **** like that can become problematic quick.  I swear this industry is going to go places.  Plus I'd rather just donate, especially if said person has consistent content that is worth it.

Seasons Passes.  Day 1 DLC.  Locked Content.  Day 1 Paid Mods (lol).  Microtransactions.

And the funny thing is, it's the smart business owners capitalizing on the hordes of people who end up buying into all these again and again.  Speak with your wallet doesn't seem to hold much weight in the past few years.

Good perspective of the overarching idea. Gaming practices are becoming insane. The problem with games it that they emulate what works on a very large scale. Basically, if these mod thing works other companies will pick it up. Same thing with Day 1 DLC  and all of that other bullshit

Had to wait two years for GTA V
MGSV delayed on PC (no collectors edition, $60 for digital version)

No FFXV
No Kingdom Hearts 3
No Bloodborne
No Persona 5

No Uncharted

Only getting year old Vita ports of the worst games (Rebirth series, worst Tales game, Fairy Fencer vita)

Day Z, Elite Dangerous, The Forest, Planetside 2 all coming to consoles
Exclusive library consists of shovelware any console gamer can play on a toaster (but they won't because they suck)

Literally renting games on Steam

LITERALLY PAYING FOR MODS

Where were you when consoles won?

Hey maybe Valve will hire some more customer service employees to ensure that all of this is handled in a responsible manner.

What's really baffling is that of the mods currently for sale, there are free equivalents on the Nexus that are way better. Why pay $2 for an armor set when there's dozens of great armor mods for free?

I wouldn't put "exclusives" on that list, it makes it unfair.

Unfortunately, people seem to be buying. Not tons of people mind you, but that Shadow Scale Set was at 700ish subscribers earlier today iirc, and it's creeping to 1100. You can always count on people that play rogues to lack common sense.

Oh and people paying for survival mods which by their nature are all about inconvenience, when multiple mods aim to do the same stuff.
