I got about 1000 or so health on my assassin and I dropped like a fly. I noticed it said I took 1005 damage!? Why and what is this about?

They have a powered shot that they can do after being wounded. If you pay attention, the following happens:

1) They attack normally hitting for around 450 on a player without ranged defense.

2) They get wounded

3) They roll backwards, then fire for over 1000.

You need to either incapacitate them in some fashion, (knockdown, fear, stun, paralyze, sleep, stagger), or finish them before they can react and perform this powered hit.

Did we ever get a definitive answer on whether or not the amount of damage was legit?

They have the Full Draw ability.

It's not the Full Draw, that takes you from full health to 0 though, Full Draw hurts, but it won't one shot you unless you're really new to the game. It's an odd move where they take a few steps back after you damage them, and it's a quick snipe that just destroys you. Pretty much exactly how Drasca explained it.

It's done this since launch, really annoying but if you are aware of it you can plan around it. It's helpful on the Assassin because if you attack behind and from stealth you can just OHK them before they OHK you.

Just don't ever hit an archer from the front with something that wont kill them right away.

It's a similar move that the mages make.  They will attack for a bit then move backwards.  If you step into the trail of fire/electricity it hurts really bad (the cold doesn't seam to hurt me).  This is avoided a lot easier than the archer move as you just don't move forward to hit the mage but move around the trail to kill it.

But I agree the archer one is nasty and one shots are annoying.

I'm not 100% sure this is still the case or not, but I did work with the combat team for a bit early in the project and there used to be a combo attack on the archers. Basically, if you see a group of archers close together and they raise their bows above their heads, they are synching their target.

When this happens find cover... fast, as they will then simultaneously perform a charged shot at a single target.

I'm assuming you took that arrow in the knee.

It will be worse in the new DLC since the Venatori archers are upgrading to these Longbows:

I'm not sure this is what we are talking about. If you walk up and smack an archer from the front and dont kill them or stagger them, they will do a little hoppy hop back about 2 meters and pop you for epic damage. Like "cut through full guard and partway into your life" damage. Even on routine they can cut a little notch out of you when everything else bounces off you with 1 damage.

Can someone post a video of this?

Well I suppose if there isn't cover nearby you could go into stealth -- oh, wait...

AFAIK, they do not behave as a group like this. They may choose the same target via the aggro / threat system in place, because they their individual target-decision system says "if not aggro'ed, attack X class, if not, then Y class, if not Z etc", but there is no combo attack between archers (assuming that's what you mean). I do not know what you mean if there is some other meaning to 'combo attack'.

They do have powered shots with slow animations like you mentioned above. Venatori have a powered shot with slow 'magic arrow' animation that also debuffs the player with weakness. Red Templars have one that debuffs with shock. Venatori Marksmen have their 'backwards combat rolling draw' shot that can do 1k+ damage when wounded. This rolling draw animation is quick however.

Regardless, players should not want to go in the open naked to archer fire. They will all attack the same target until manipulated otherwise (through CC, aggro-system, line of sight). Ideally the team should manipulate the archers into a position advantageous to the team, rather than be gunned down.

I remember taking a 1,183 damage shot on my Reaver when I had about 85 Cunning.
