Got home from work and decided I was going to play some DAI. While strutting around Haven, chatting up the team it occured to me: EVERYONE has the exact same heroic build. Now I hardly mind this as it looks aesthetically pleasing (Cassandra can really fill out a suit of armor) but seeing EVERYONE as the average height, muscly built dudes, skinny gals, and all that jazz is a little... odd.
I know that this makes more sense in the Mass Effect universe as almost everyone has perfect master race genes (Gene Therapy) and most humans you encounter are alliance military/cerberus goons/mercaneries and all of those types would be expected to maintain a level of physical fitness and since a Human N7 Alliance Soldier (Both Genders Avalable) has been pretty much confirmed (Various concept art, E3 2014 trailer, and mentioned at PAX and Comicon I believe) then the same would no doubt apply for you (So not err... "large" or "wide" builds) but still in real life not EVERY soldier is the same height/size due different genes, parental heritage, healthy/unhealthy developement etc... I hereby propose the following builds...
- Tall: This option would make you slightly taller than average human height. At ComiCon we saw a minor difference in stature between male and female Heroes and thus this build would place male Heroes as slightly shorter than Garrus (Tallest Squadmate) and females at around Tali's height (slightly taller than Shepard with her helmet). The difference would not be great enough to affect cover mechanics or cause you to clunk you head on any doorways.
- Average height: Need I say more? You will be the same height as the majority of human npcs. Males have already been shown to be very slightly taller than females.
- Short: Shorter builds would make males about female height, and females slightly shorter than normal. Would be nice to roleplay as a small guy/gal everyone underestimates. In Dragon Age I loved watching my city elf swinging his massive hammer into bad guys.
- Bulky/Muscly/Broad build: This Guy/Gal will be built slightly bigger/stronger than the average Marine. Think James Vega or Captain Riley. This fits well for bruiser characters who prefer strongarm tactics and big guns. Or you can be a gentle giant.
- Average build (Atleast for a space marine): Think Shepard/Kaiden/pre-boob job and botox Ashley. They fit in the middle of the scale and share the same amount of width and muscle as most other military characters.
- Thin: The sleek, thin build for stealthy, less combat oriented or otherwise less physically strong characters. Still well built however, just with less meat on their bones. In the codex it says that biotics drain the energy and nutrients of the body and that soldiers can only withstand so much before they become exhausted, thus with so much strain put on biotic soldiers I always envisioned them as physically weaker (They cannot wear heavy armor in ME1) and thus I would appreciate this build for my biotic/stealth characters.
I know they cut body modification from DAI since they opted for races instead (Big tall Qunari, average humans, thin short elves etc...) and I'd honestly prefer being able to play a Quarian sentinel or Turian Archangel/infiltrator but if they opt to not give us multiple races (highly likely due to the vast resources it would require) I would appreciate they give me a little more control during character creation than simply facial features and skin tone. It would help every character feel different, create more roleplay opportunities (Big bruiser with an even bigger gun, small sleek and deadly infiltrator, a biotic stretched to his/her physical limits etc...). Your squad may also have a couple tidbits of dialogue for you such as warning you not to bump your head on a door frame if your tall, voicing their surprise at such a small marine, complementing a large characters muscles, or asking if you've been eating enough if your thin (especially if your a biotic).. This has been done before in Dragon Age Origins/Inquistion, Dark Souls, Saints Row, and the Sims where protagonists come in varying heights and builds. The option to modify builds/face could be done via surgery if you change your mind.
Now the Golden Question: What do you think? Would you approve of this feature? Would you rather have one universal build for humans and invest the resources elsewhere? And lastly what kind of character would you build? All my videogame characters more or less end up like Kaiden (Battlemage/Combat Engineer class, Nice and idealistic, usually dies etc...) and thus I would create a Thin Male Sentinel of Average Height.
