Got home from work and decided I was going to play some DAI. While strutting around Haven, chatting up the team it occured to me: EVERYONE has the exact same heroic build. Now I hardly mind this as it looks aesthetically pleasing (Cassandra can really fill out a suit of armor) but seeing EVERYONE as the average height, muscly built dudes, skinny gals, and all that jazz is a little... odd.

I know that this makes more sense in the Mass Effect universe as almost everyone has perfect master race genes (Gene Therapy) and most humans you encounter are alliance military/cerberus goons/mercaneries and all of those types would be expected to maintain a level of physical fitness and since a Human N7 Alliance Soldier (Both Genders Avalable) has been pretty much confirmed (Various concept art, E3 2014 trailer, and mentioned at PAX and Comicon I believe) then the same would no doubt apply for you (So not err... "large" or "wide" builds) but still in real life not EVERY soldier is the same height/size due different genes, parental heritage, healthy/unhealthy developement etc... I hereby propose the following builds...

  1. Tall: This option would make you slightly taller than average human height. At ComiCon we saw a minor difference in stature between male and female Heroes and thus this build would place male Heroes as slightly shorter than Garrus (Tallest Squadmate) and females at around Tali's height (slightly taller than Shepard with her helmet). The difference would not be great enough to affect cover mechanics or cause you to clunk you head on any doorways.
  2. Average height: Need I say more? You will be the same height as the majority of human npcs. Males have already been shown to be very slightly taller than females.
  3. Short: Shorter builds would make males about female height, and females slightly shorter than normal. Would be nice to roleplay as a small guy/gal everyone underestimates. In Dragon Age I loved watching my city elf swinging his massive hammer into bad guys.
  4. Bulky/Muscly/Broad build: This Guy/Gal will be built slightly bigger/stronger than the average Marine. Think James Vega or Captain Riley. This fits well for bruiser characters who prefer strongarm tactics and big guns. Or you can be a gentle giant.
  5. Average build (Atleast for a space marine): Think Shepard/Kaiden/pre-boob job and botox Ashley. They fit in the middle of the scale and share the same amount of width and muscle as most other military characters.
  6. Thin: The sleek, thin build for stealthy, less combat oriented or otherwise less physically strong characters. Still well built however, just with less meat on their bones. In the codex it says that biotics drain the energy and nutrients of the body and that soldiers can only withstand so much before they become exhausted, thus with so much strain put on biotic soldiers I always envisioned them as physically weaker (They cannot wear heavy armor in ME1) and thus I would appreciate this build for my biotic/stealth characters.

I know they cut body modification from DAI since they opted for races instead (Big tall Qunari, average humans, thin short elves etc...) and I'd honestly prefer being able to play a Quarian sentinel or Turian Archangel/infiltrator but if they opt to not give us multiple races (highly likely due to the vast resources it would require) I would appreciate they give me a little more control during character creation than simply facial features and skin tone. It would help every character feel different, create more roleplay opportunities (Big bruiser with an even bigger gun, small sleek and deadly infiltrator, a biotic stretched to his/her physical limits etc...). Your squad may also have a couple tidbits of dialogue for you such as warning you not to bump your head on a door frame if your tall, voicing their surprise at such a small marine, complementing a large characters muscles, or asking if you've been eating enough if your thin (especially if your a biotic).. This has been done before in Dragon Age Origins/Inquistion, Dark Souls, Saints Row, and the Sims where protagonists come in varying heights and builds. The option to modify builds/face could be done via surgery if you change your mind.

Now the Golden Question: What do you think? Would you approve of this feature? Would you rather have one universal build for humans and invest the resources elsewhere? And lastly what kind of character would you build? All my videogame characters more or less end up like Kaiden (Battlemage/Combat Engineer class, Nice and idealistic, usually dies etc...) and thus I would create a Thin Male Sentinel of Average Height.

They might go with this since they don't have alien MC. I wouldn't bet on if though.
As for DAI, there we're a couple of different models in companions. Bull is bulkier then Male qunari, and Sera is curvier then Female elves. Possibly Solas has a Less skinny build then male elves.

That all creates a hell of a lot of headaches for animation and modeling.

You'll notice that pretty much all games that allow it have difficulties with those things.

I Did notice issues in DAI, Dark Souls, and one minor one in origins. I would hope the differences in builds would not be too drastic.

Would there be options of customization other than height and musculature?

I'd be elated if I could give my character a body type both petite (4'10 to 5'3) and curvalicious and bootilicious:

$_35.JPG

I'm not really a fan of tall and narrow because it doesn't fit me or my characters.

Spoiler

Most likely won't happen!

I wouldn't be surprised if we just get the DA:I character creator but that would still be a big improvement from the old games.

Sort of like DAI, yes. Like scars, tattoos, skin type, etc. I was also thinking of being able to change body shape. For example all your examples have them being muscular, but what about lithe characters?

Will cause a whole bunch of complications. Height will probably be the most problematic with different angles required to keep eye contact. As an example, qunari protagonist in DAI which has quite a few clipping issues and elven protagonist with his/her head clipping through Varric's hair :D Body complexion causes issues with armor which will change based on the body type. There are problems with it in Skyrim, where the middle weight option is almost always the one without any problems.

I would want a different body type for companions with brittle bone disease. Having Joker to be as physically fit as Shepard is weird

I would like to adjust my hero's height. I am average by my country of origin standards at about 148 cm. That is about 4 foot 10 inches. My female Shepard appeared to be about 180 cm to 182 cm or about 5 foot 10 inches  to 6 foot tall. I know that in the Mass Effect Universe all humans are the same height, weight, and shape. Even an old, senile woman in Mass Effect 3 is in the same physical shape and size as female Shepard. It seems so awkward to me. Does BioWare think all humans will be exceptionally tall in the future? Shouldn't men be proportionally much taller/larger than women also? People of Asian descent make up a large part of the human population and we tend to be smaller than Europeans. Both men and women are much smaller in height on average than Europeans. But regardless most human women are not 6 foot tall.

Here are some female height averages from Wikipedia:

Canada 162.3 cm (5 ft 4 in) to 163.3 cm (5 ft 4.5 in)

America 157.7 cm (5 ft 2 in) to 164.8 cm (5 ft 5 in)

China  157.0 cm (5 ft 2 in) to  161.3 cm (5 ft 3.5 in)

India  151.9 cm (5 ft 0 in) to 152.6 (5 ft 0 in)

Brazil 158.8 cm (5 ft 2.5 in) to  161.1 cm (5 ft 3.5 in)

I hope we can make height adjustments because no women I know are as tall as the human women in Mass Effect.

I would be happy to see this for NPCs but for PCs, I'm worried that it's another case of a lot of resources spent on something that

a ) might turn out looking crap as it did in DAI with clipping etc.or

b ) hardly ever get used as people will tend to pick an idealised body shape

It does't mean it's not worth doing if it can be done well; only that it's value is subjective and the benefits have to be weighed against the drawbacks. I want to see a robust CC with many options but if body sliders means crappy hair, I'd rather lose the body sliders.

I personally never really gave much thought to every ME character sharing the same body type, and never really viewed it as something that needed to be changed, especially if it takes away resources. I'd rather them perfect one body type and just work on clipping issues. In regards to Shepard all armor had different styles and sizes, which helped make Shepard varied enough. Having unique civilian wear would help too.

DAI was pretty bad in that character beards weren't even attached to their faces, clipping was probably the worst I had seen, and weapons still floated on people's backs. Imagine if there were body sliders in that game, oh boy.

As soon as I saw the title, I was like boob slider. I'm sorry.

Even if there is a boob slider there is no boob slider. Because it's set to maximum by default.
