***IT IS CONFIRMED!!! NASA has replicated the faster-than-light effect of the field in a complete vacuum, clearing any doubt that the field is truly being generated.***

So... NASA was testing an experimental ElectroMagnetic thrust engine that would be able to move in space without the need for fuel and detected something totally unexpected - a warp field.

For those not familiar with this staple of Star Trek and other sci-fi pieces, a warp field creates an area where time space can move much more quickly than be surrounding area. In science fiction, a warp field drive is used to travel around space at faster than light speeds by creating a field directly in front of the spaceship that surrounds it, while keeping the ship itself in "normal" space, thus allowing travel through space at faster than light speeds while not aging or producing gravitational force that would liquefy any passengers.

The most shocking thing about all of this is that the amount of energy to create this warp field (if it truly was created) was BAFFLINGLY low. Star Trek required fanciful energy sources like dilithium crystals to account for the huge amount of energy they assumed it would take. But this requires much less energy and can be generated in a lab with very little in the ways of industrial power structure. This means cheap, abundant FTL space flight COULD be on the horizon in our lifetimes!

***UPDATE***
The team has validated their findings, so this is no longer speculation. We have the technology to create a field that allows particles to move faster than the speed of light. We still do not completely understand the why's and how's of the field (this will likely cause a paradigm shift in physics), but the implications are staggering.

Not only do we have eventual FTL considerations, but the original purpose of the EM drive - thrust without fuel - has also been confirmed to be totally valid. This alone could solve countless energy problems, while not even touching on the countless ramifications of both space flight and theoretical time travel once FTL speeds are attained.

This is no joke. This is not a fluke. This could be one of the, if not THE, greatest discovery since the dawn of human history. Others will likely validate these results a thousand times if need be to confirm their validity, as done with all earth-shattering discoveries in physics, but NASA has come out with an official statement outting their credibility on the line with its authenticity. Meet this with about as much skepticism as would be natural for NASA to say they have discovered a new sun or asteroid belt - which is to say not much skepticism at all.

I think the main reason we haven't seen much about it is that they haven't replicated the results yet. But if this pans out, that would be monumental.

I'll be disappointed if once we start exploring the galaxy there aren't any blue-skinned sex goddesses out there.

I get the feeling that even if this is replicated the governments around the world won't care and won't give the funding necessary to develop the technology. Either that or they keep it secret and use it for military purposes.

Alrighty then. Let me just charge up my old Duracell batteries and off we go to Proxima Centauri. :)

Seriously though, pretty cool news. Gotta keep an eye on that research.

Well, the cat is kind of out of the bag. The EM thrust engine was actually created in 2014 by a British scientist and was widely circulated. NASA just got around to testing it themselves and also happen to have the tools to detect light paths. It's when they used these tools that they realized that some of the lasers beams directed into the resoance chamber of the drive saw that they were actually moving faster than the speed of light.

A number of space facilities already have replicas of the drive. And besides, it isn't incredibly complex to produce... it's just that the drive isn't really harnessing the warp field it is (allegedly) creating.

If they can verify their results, people will be building warp field generators across the world in a matter of months. Whether that leads to actual warp drives or any kind of space vehicle will have to be seen, but the knowledge and ability is already out there to at least create what has already been created.

What's the BSN's thoughts?

After being told FTL was impossible, and faced with the reality of one-way trips to Mars and generational ships - cautiously optimistic. If space travel could really be similar to sci-fi I'd probably start caring about it again. I'm a very simple man.

I can sympathize. Conventional thruster technology has been my mindset for a number of years. To have this appear out of the blue is... well, let's just hope the findings are validated.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out that the "warp drive" has been around for decades in secret, and it's only now that the U.S. government has decided to let us in on this technology little by little.

Well, considering the engine they discovered this with was actually developed by a British scientist, I'm a little skeptical of any conspiracy nut theories. Regardless, the science is what is important here.

Oh yeah, I mean the discovery of the warp field is phenomenal, and could actually lead to a warp drive in the future. That's certainly important for the technological progress of mankind.
