Hey all

I'm about to start a Nightmare game of DA:I as I have already completed the game on Hard when it was released as a Mage. But, this time I plan on playing a Tank Warrior but I have no idea really which specialization would be most beneficial as I know that Guardian is more tankier than Templar. I don't really fancy Reaver for my Tank.

I plan to run with Solus as my main Spirit guy with Vivienne with Barrier and the rest in Frost. So I thought may be going with Templar for the extra dispell might be useful but then I think I would be that good of a tank..

Any tips?

Thanks.

I'd avoid Reaver, but that's my personal opinion.  If you want to tank, there is no better specialization than Champion.  You can go 2H or SnS and tank as a Champion.  It is a really fun specialization when fighting boss enemies.  And arguably the most fun I've had as a tank was with a 2H Champ Tank.  Templar is great but really needs 2H to take advantage of their wrath/purge combo with bug damage numbers, and they lack the defensive capability the Champ has.

Also, I highly recommend you make Viv your barrier/spirit person.  Put spirit blade, barrier, and revival on priority and she'll stay near you when she casts barrier (meaning you have barrier).   Avoid expensive spells with her so she always has mana for barrier and revival.  Expensive spells like winter's grasp, energy barrage, etc.  Stick with cheap spells.

Solas is great, but I'd have him grab static cage+ pre-skyhold and then after respec and get pull of the abyss and immolate.  He'll have great mana regen and provide decent CC.

And if you do go 2H Champ Tank, I'd bring Varric along too for his extra 5% crit.  It will help with 'flow of battle' passive.

I'm currently doing Champion on Nightmare and it's working very well....much better than Templar which I tried earlier.  Templar powers are good for rift fights, but not much else.  I've not tried Reaver, but on AI, Iron Bull always does poorly compared with Cassandra and Blackwall on AI, so I assume the specialty must stink.

Since you said you didn't want to pick Reaver I will keep comments about it brief.  I probably wouldn't pick it if I were to play the inquisitor as the tank either, but that is because I would play Reaver as DPS.

Champion is the tank spec, so from the standpoint of pure durability, that one makes a bit more sense for a tank than Templar.  You can get Walking Fortress / Siege Breaker and be near unkillable.

Templar can be made to tank, and there is a bit of synergy between War Cry and then Wrath of Heaven / Spell Purge combo.

There are two caveats though, the first being that you are going to be playing the more difficulty part of the game as a vanilla warrior anyway, so from that standpoint you won't have a specialization for what are some of the harder parts anyway.  Second is that really a lot of the abilities and passives that make a decent warrior tank come from the Vanguard tree anyway, so it is possible to make a respectable tank with any specialization.

I haven't played the Inquisitor as the chief tank, but I do use Cassandra for the job most of the time, and she is a Templar and not a Champion.

I personally do not play nightmare. If I did, I would focus on the weapon & Shield tree, as well as the vanguard tree. Specialization would be mostly good for RP. I am thinking Champion for my Qunari for two reasons:

  1. She has a background of being a mercenary hero type, loves fights that involve protecting others from things like bandits, beasts and other monstrous types.
  2. I feel that out of all the warrior specializations, the Champion is the one that fits the role of Inquisitor best.

Champion would be the best choice. With it it's possible to play even as 2H tank.

Temlar is too enemy-dependend.

Reaver is 2H dps only in my opinion. My canon warrior is a Reaver and I tested her as a tank. Not really great.

Personally, I would have it come down to what weapon style you want to use. While Champion is definitely the more "tanky" of the two, the extra survivability tools are bordering on overkill if you've gone with sword and shield, given the defenisve abilities in that tree. On the other hand, Templar adds some nice stuff to help with the SS warrior. Sure, some of it's abilites are enemy specific, but the most important - the ability to trigger an AoE combo on their own - isn't.

If you want to run around with a massive two-handed weapon though, Champion should be your go-to spec. Not only does it make up for the lower survivability of that style, but there's some excellent synergy between the cooldown reducing skills in 2h, and the long cooldown on the Champ's invulnerability skill.

Id say champ, with Templar as the runner up.

Just wish the templar had the passive the multiplayer templar has :(
