What were you and who made up your party? Which boss battles gave you the trouble?
I was at level 22 playing on casual when I started the "Jaws of Hakkon" with a mage Inquisitor and with a party consisting of Cassandra, Cole and Solas. I had the upgraded potion slot so I could carry more health potions, belts that helped expediate focus gain and Solas had the revive ability.

One of the fights was a bigger challenge than I was expecting on normal. After getting my butt kicked a couple of times, I got serious, geared up properly, and went back and kicked his butt.
I'll have to try it on Nightmare.

(to Electricia) I will always be amused by the fact that it was that thing that gave me more trouble than anything else in the DLC.

They did it deliberately.
It was a general criticism that the game was "too easy." I played on nightmare and (generally) didn't come across a lot of challenging encounters.
The DLC, however, was tricky and I enjoyed the challenge.
One of the many problems with making a game that a whole lot of different people, who enjoy different aspects, play, I guess.
Although ... I do recall someone (a designer) saying that it was really only supposed to be harder on Hard and Nightmare. But, it depends on how it was changed, I guess. I did notice, on nightmare, that enemies could one-shot my part, whereas the ending of DAI didn't do that. Dunno.

I enjoyed the challenge; the DLC, I think, does require you to be more aware of your enviroment and your party like planning ahead when you see a group of *spoilers* and consider how to best take out its dps members. The main game, I think, can cause people to become complacent so when they play this, the sudden increase in difficulty can hit hard.

Are you supposed to be able to yolo all bosses? If you truly wanted to do that then you should be playing on Casual to begin with.
Relatively difficult DLC bosses aren't exactly new in Dragon Age either.
Remember Harvester in Golems of Amgarrak? Corypheus and the Grand Duke in DA2?

On one hand people complain that DAI was way too easy even on nightmare, and now that they fixed that, people complain it's too hard. ![]()
BW just can't win, it seems.

The main game was too easy -> people complain.
Bioware makes the dlc harder to please them.
The dlc is too hard -> people complain.
You can't please everyone..
The dlc's difficulty was just right to me.
This is completely correct. If folk on level 27 are dying on Normal then the game is challenging them to make use of the decent quantities of additional materials in this region to cope with it.
I was playing on Hard (having completed the main game) and took it down to Normal, but I also crafted Heal-on-Kill weapons and Generate Guard armour for all my party, so when I went into fights, all my party would be recovering to full health and my rogue and mage would also be engaging with full guard.

It may not only be the OP who has this complaint,
but in my opinion it is not really fair to level it at BioWare, who are responding to player feedback.

I like the Jaws of Hakkon DLC because you cannot breeze through it in real time.
Let your tank start each battle, and only engage with the rest of the party after using Battlecry on every opponent. Then, always have the entire party attack individual Rangers -> Mages -> Rogues-> Warriors, in that order.
Using the term "stupidly" on something you haven't mastered yet while evidently countless others did, is a little harsh. Don't mean to be rude, but some of us not only adapt but also quite liked it.
Anyways, good luck and give it another try!

How many waves of demons are the rifts supposed to have?? you have the group of demons, kill them, wave 2 comes kill them seal rift, a rift i believe was on shallow water, it got to wave 5 and that just pushed me to the breaking point

(to dirk5027) That's... odd. Usually, I believe, it is only three waves with increased difficulty in demon selection in the DLC. That sounds like it could possibly be a bug unless it is a specific rift then it might be a special rift that is supposed to do that. Can you post a screenshot of its location?

Purchase schematics you can find in the Avaar shop and upgrade your equipment as necessary. Use the top runes to max out your weapons. Make sure you don't waste your focus ability because Mark of the Rift is seriously helpful against the tougher opponents. One of the rifts presented me with 5 pride demons simultaneously but MoR thinned them out very helpfully and I used it in the final boss battles. I am not the greatest at battles but I completed the entire run on normal without having to reload once. I did this after the main game so was level 26/27 by the end.
First run I was a rogue assassin archer, with Cassandra, Dorian and Vivienne.
Second run I was a Knight Enchanter, with Cassandra, Dorian and Cole.
You just have to plan ahead and think about what is the best team and set up their abilities accordingly. Did you fight any of the high dragons in the main game? If so it isn't such a bad plan to just go with your dragon slaying team.

I found it a lot easier than Golems of Amgarrak or Legacy.
(IMHO, Malvernis is still the hardest thing to kill in the whole series. Only managed him on Nightmare once despite playing through the DLC seven times.)

Try using Cleansing/Banning skills on the rift itself during combat...

Oh yeah man, I was playing on Nightmare but still only even got there around lvl 23 - finished at lvl 27.
Given the low level cap, a single one makes helluva difference.

It's not that hard on normal. I went in with a level 19 team and did just fine (leveled up to 25 before the final boss fight, of course). Killed those level 30 demons at the island in the beginning with the use of the rift mark, which naturally did most of the work. My team build was my mage, Dorian, Cole and Blackwall.

I found it a lot easier than Golems of Amgarrak or Legacy.
I can still picture the bronto cage room and that damn Harvester room with perfect clarity. Legacy's final boss fight was a fun little dance, but that bronto cage was a challenge. I remember having to take the enemies out in a very specific order to survive.
The Harvester, on the other hand, felt like hours of doing the same rotation over and over. It felt good to defeat it... but I'm not sure I'd want to do it again.
Luckily Hakkon is closer to the bronto cage room kind of hard, vs. Amgarrak's concept of hard. It's a puzzle to solve rather than "if the player is tired, they'll make mistakes!"

Started it at level 22 on nightmare with a rift mage inq, solas, sera and blackwall. The difficulty makes the DLC a lot better imo and it felt right for a nightmare difficulty. I had Tier 3 crafted equipment and some fights were pretty tough but focus abilities are still overpowered, so i suggest you craft good gear and use your focus abilities.
