@LoudAngryJerk: What have you done to your dog? Why would put all that crap in your dog's mouth? S/he looks miserable.

I started JOH at level 20 on Causal and ended it at level 24 with an easy win against Hakkon. On Normal I level up to 22/23 and go from there. Never tried past that, but with the right crafting and skills, it's really lots of fun! All DLC's have been known to be harder than the main games too.

Okay, I've finished JoH.

There was one fight in the DLC that rivalled the difficulty of the more challenging fights from DAO (like Jarvia or Caridin). Just one. Everything else was the same as the rest of the game - the ordinary fights would punish me only if I really wasn't paying attention.

The only real difference is that we can't outlevel the content.

It forces you to use all the game offers, that's really all it does.

I'm not saying that it was easy for me on Nightmare or anything, but as soon as I started using potions (which if you're honest, you NEVER do in the main game, don't you now), and upgrade them; as well as give my party's gear cold resistance.

If there's anything to take away, it's that all your opponents have a fierce but very singular modus operandi. The DLC is hard if you try to tank it, like the vanilla game encouraged, or at least allowed you to. Mark Darrah said that they were trying to improve the gameplay rather than just adding content, and I think they did.

My Knight Enchanter is having no trouble with JoH at all (Lvs 23-25 so far, Normal difficulty).  Some party members will drop dead occasionally, but that's only a minor annoyance with the solo-capable KE in the lead.  Seriously, this specialization is broken, but that's another conversation.

I just started this today at around L22, and found it a bit of a shock to the system, as I'd just done EDL and Hissing Wastes without encountering any serious danger. To have Cassandra, in her crafted T3 Masterwork gear (who I'd come to believe was invulnerable and immortal) lose three quarters of her health when sealing the first rift I encountered was quite an eye-opener. The Ice Giant also proved to be a pretty tough opponent.

Up until now I'd gotten used to just charging my party in, and happily zerging everything with almost complete impunity... it now looks as though I'm going to have to adopt some proper tactics, and make use of the tactical camera a lot more.

One of the criticisms I would level at DAI- before Jaws of Hakkon- is that I spent a lot of time building my Inquisitor and my team. Scrounging for good metals, leather, runes, gear, etc. About level 16 or so- you become godlike. At  level 20 - regardless of specialty- you are downright immortal. The game needed one or two more areas with high level enemies to put you and your team to the test. JOH delivered that, IMO. Too many stupid spiders- but the Hakkonites, the Fade Rifts, and the boss fights were all difficult and enjoyable. Enjoyed the DLC and looking forward to the next- hoping they give us something involving the Qunari.

I just played through at lvl 17 (I think I'm on casual, maybe normal) for my garbage first run and finished at lvl 22 with no difficulty except for a giant who snuck up on me when I was unprepared.  And I skipped all the rifts and collections.

Recommendations for lvl on Hard?  I'm at 22 or 23 and just finished the arbor wilds.  One of my beefs is that I'm over leveled for most things, so I'm looking forward to the challenge.  I should be able to make it through without too much trouble, right?  I just need to keep my eyes on potions, bring fire powers/weapons, and maybe leave Cole at home (I swear that kid has a death wish - I can never get his tactics adjusted off of "suicide")?

I did it starting at 23 (on hard), and I was 26 when I finished. If you bring a team you know how to use (this is not the time to try something new), and don't rely on frost damage, you'll do fine.

Most of the content scales to you, though some of it won't go above 23 and some won't go below 26. So there's an adequate challenge.

The last two fights in JOH were actually quite surprisingly difficult, even on Normal. I didn't really mind the spike though, since I always found vanilla DAI way too easy once you get past Skyhold. I played DA2 on Normal/Hard and DAO only on Casual, yet I had no trouble with DAI on Nightmare, so for people who played the other games on Nightmare, DAI was probably a snooze for the combat.

I'm not finished yet, but I just needed to craft some new gear (and respec) two people, and I was good to go.  My Lavellan and Dorian, since you can't be a mage with too much squish in those parts.  Cass is eternally a rock without any adjustments, and Cole has been surprisingly resilient so far.  But I expect I'll be upgrading him soon.  You can't expect to just breeze through without any effort, and I like that.  (Tho I may have started laughing hysterically when four pride demons popped out of a rift.)

And off-topic: The Avvars are really fascinating.

Only hard part I had was the boss fight in the temple place after you destroy the ice wall. And that's only because the boss kept bringing in minions over and over.

The final boss fight though was a disappointing cakewalk. But that may be because I killed all the dragons in the main game so I knew how he would fight and what to do.

In the battle in this ice temple of Hakkon I thought

"I want the combat gameplay from DAO back! With all spells of the mage! And the cross over spells like this Storm of Century"

Hakkon was nothing compared to the strongest dragon in the game. So no it wasn't that hard.

I don't think SotC would have been super effective.

I'm referring to the "Firestarter" achievement.

Then again, you only need to get Firestarter once so in subsequent playthroughs you can just ignore the shards.

Is it just me or is Jaws of Hakkon at the end utterly and stupidily hard on Normal.  I had to put it down to Casual for two boss fights and im lvl 27 ffs!!....Good DLC but not enjoyable

It was fun and challenging. So I disagree.

How is it, in general, on easy?

Mechanically, on Easy it's supposed to work exactly the same as the rest of the game.

But it's way higher level.  So expect the difficulty to match what you found in other areas of the game where the enemies were the same level as you (or higher).

The lowest I've seen anything in JoH scale is level 23.

I rather enjoyed the higher difficulty here. I was not expecting the ice giant to be as much of a pain as it was, since I was so accustomed to slaughtering giants in droves in the Emerald Graves. The Jaws of Hakkon themselves were alright, though their frost weapons made things a bit tougher, but the rifts were pretty something. I have to say that I really appreciate high level nightmare demons. Easily my favorite enemy to pop out of a rift.

I spoiled the level 30 despair demons for myself by being fully prepared for them, thanks to reading this forum. Static cage, jar of bees, full-three-bar mark of the rift, Sera's thousand cuts and Cassandra's templar powers compounded with having both my character and Sera be archers made for a surprisingly short battle, at least on normal.

The only annoying thing about this DLC is that it shows how bad the companion AI really is and requires more micro-management than it should. I'm looking at you Bruiser Whirlwind and you to Cass... STOP RUNNING INTO IT WHEN IT'S CHASING ME!

The archers are interesting usually I'd send my Inquisitor to deal with them (if there was one or two) or I'd use the new ability I got and then drag the archers one by one for a good beating.

For the 2nd last boss. I just used Mark of the Rift + the new ability you get + Sera's thousand Cuts (both have 1 focus bar) and I just got everyone to pound into him taking his health down by half when Mark of the Rift went away.

I was playing on Hard.

I was not expecting the ice giant

My reaction when I saw that...

"Oooohhhh I'm going to kill you!!!" It then proceeded to die respectfully.

Actually it was the AI that defeated Gurd Harofsen for me. When he charged at one of my Mages, the Follower used Fade Step and I was able to watch the enemy plummet to his demise after overstepping his authority near a cliff.

:D
