Actually it was the AI that defeated Gurd Harofsen for me. When he charged at one of my Mages, the Follower used Fade Step and I was able to watch the enemy plummet to his demise after overstepping his authority near a cliff.

:D

My first victory over Gurd was a bit lucky, too. (not quite as lucky as yours). Throughout the entire battle, he never managed to get out of the range of my Champion's "To the Death". So the damage against him just kept increasing, plus Cole cast "Mark of Death". Once I got him down to half health, it only took like 15 more seconds to kill him, and I was able to bypass the last few waves, which I found to be the most annoying part of the fight.

(Well, except that, for some reason, after the cutscene, a Bruiser was still standing, and my companions weren't. Had to take him down solo.)

And this was on Nightmare. It wasn't at all how I thought or intended it to go down, but I'll take it.

I really enjoyed the challenge of learning new ways to fight and navigate, and it helped my main game a lot.  I did see there's a recommended level of 20, even though it's available right away.  Missing the warning might lead to a really nasty surprise, though.  I can't even imagine trying to tackle the first batch of enemies right out of Haven.

I didn't think the bonus demons on the island were all that tough, but once I got fried and came back, I brought Solas for his firestorm, Cass, and used Inq's rift mark.  Over in seconds.  Now the Ice Giant....Wow.

That ice troll is the only enemy who's managed to kill Vivienne in full KE spec.  She was about Lv 21 when the party faced him too.  One boulder took away all her barrier and guard, and some of her health.  Then a swipe one-shotted her into a red skull.  She was chilled during all this, which was part of the problem.  It was mostly my fault.  I was overconfident, because the KE is usually untouchable.  Managed to revive her, and took the rest of the fight to tactical cam.  Whew!

Those demons on the island were a long fight.  One of them had a red skull icon over its head.  But at no time did they kill any of my party.

I loved the campaign it isnt as easy as people say and jaws of hakkon has a difficulty spike that is overwhelming I have played the main campaign on hard I thought it was perfect with balencing and have played the first hourish and I liked it Thought it wad a decent challenge and I have played the previous two games on nightmare including the dlc and personally found jaws of hakkon harder im stuck just before one of the boss fights im a support knight enchanter and I have cole solas and blackwall which dies in what seems like two hits with full guard and a barrier it pisses me off and I most likely wont play it in nightmare

I didn't find it overwhelmingly hard - although I did eventually drop the difficulty from Nightmare to Hard during the Gurd Harofsen battle, because after 5 failed attempts on a Sunday evening and with a busy week ahead I decided I'd rather finish it up than fiddle around with it in tactical cam through the night.

Funnily enough, I didn't have that much trouble with the Ice Troll which some people seem to have had trouble with - it was one of the first bosses I beat - but then again I had really good gear and I kept upgrading after I found better crafting materials / better schematics. JoH is one of those DLC's where you really have to min-max both your gear and your party on higher difficulties to beat it. Also, fully upgraded potions and grenades are an immense help. Fully upgraded health, mana and regen potions, Antivan fire and bees saved my squishy mage hide so, so many times.

Then again I have to say I completely hightailed from the island after I came across with the level 30+ despair demons: I was about 5 levels underleveled, so I decided to run away to level up a bit more... and then forgot about them. I'll have to get on with that next.

(Also: holy necromancy Batman!)

I finished this DLC a few days ago, personally I really enjoyed it. I went to the Frostbacks when I was around level 22/23 so it wasn't as hard as some other people but story wise it was very interesting. I learnt more about the first Inquisition which was very... intriguing to say the least. A must for Inquisition fans.

Just started JoH for the second time.

Now first time through there was a reasonable gap between finishing the game and playing JoH. I realised that it was harder than the original game but not by how much.

I just finished The Hissing Waste and completed the last five rifts without using a single healing potion. I then went to JoH and on my first rift I had 2 toons go down and used 6 healing potions.

This is so much better than the vanilla game.

I doubt that I will make the same mistakes with my next rift I just got complacent after the Hissing Waste.

I enjoyed the hell out of JoH, I played on Nightmare and finally my Rift Mage red elf had a challenge. The only thing that got me a bit annoyed is the high concentration of spiders and gorguts, other than that it is very pretty, the lore is interesting and Jaws of Hakkon themselves gave me a decent challenge with their whirlwind bruisers and ice archers. Gurd was pretty difficult I must say, as should be. Hakkon on the other hand was pretty damn easy. First time in the main game I have to think how to approach a battle to not get slaughtered by a concave of ice archers, and I'm happy.

Q: Has anyone got a valid solution for a build design for Cassandra, or other S&S Warriors to prevent death when reaching the lvls of these new archers? Up until JoH, she managed to stay intact fairly well, but at ca. 25th in this DLC, she dies in most fights where archers are involved.

Spec her some new crafted equipment with a bunch of Ranged Defense stacking on them.

May look into that, at least for End Game material. Thanks!

Cass is wasted playing S&S, the stun-dispel combo is much less powerful. Use Blackwall for tanking. If you insist on Cass tanking, get Unbowed on hit and Fortress on hit equipment for her and stack HP, preferably even control her to get the most out of Shield Wall. Also, crowd control is critical. Pull of the Abyss, Veil Strike, Static Cage, any other disabling effects are your friends.

I find JoH being much easier now that i play a S&S warrior myself then when i let blackwall or cassandra tank for me. As long as i keep aggro on me i don't even have to give the other characters orders. Between unbowed, walking fortress and the rush attack my guard is almost always at max.

Stupidly hard? Not really. Stupidly annoying? Extremely.

Darn spider respawns with cheap poison attacks that is design to harass you and waste potions. Stupid companions keep running off in different directions fighting them ignoring orders to disengage.  <_<  <_<  <_<

Thanks. Cassandra is the only Warrior in play; others stay benched.

Crafting special gear will be a secondary option; prefer fixes to the actual build, if possible. This is the same problem I have with the loss of Attribute bonuses.

Blackwall is without a doubt the best companion tank.  The Champion tree on top of Vanguard makes him indestructible.  This playthrough, I'm determined to stick with Cassandra and Varric for the first time.  (Sera is my preferred rogue.)  I used a fade-touched item in her gear to give her 10% chance of casting Walking Fortress.  I think it's helping.

I agree TC.  Jaws of Hakkon was ridiculous.  I was at the right level but was still getting steamrolled by every thing.  Archers were going through my health like a hot knife through butter and the bosses were just insane HP sponges.  EVERYTHING in that DLC was an HP sponge now that I think about it.

Eventually I had to change the difficulty from Normal to easy (I have no effing clue how you guys are playing this game on nightmare, much less the DLC).  But I don't plan to play the DLC ever again.

Steps I took were to prioritize Archers over Mages, use the new Ability to prevent damage as much as possible, and avoid the river. Hated the spiders more than the archers.

My first run through JoH was on nightmare, the only thing I found really challenging was the Level 30 dead mans loot encounter. That encounter is what made me go update all my gear since level 20 (I was level 25 at the time). Once I got my gear updated and changed some skills around, everything was barely a challenge or easier.

Gurd eats my lunch quite frequently, or annihilates the Party and the Inq dies slowly of attrition. If an Archer goes unnoticed, I often see Barrier, Guard, and some Health disappear from a single attack. And JoH makes me hate spiders all over again.

That said, am a fan of the DLC, and hope Descent in like it.

Nothing is too hard for my Assassin archer Inquisitor, Sera, Cassandra and Dorian, and those ogres are in for a world of hurt.

It may take Tactical use of Leaping Shot, Evasion, Charging Bull, and Fade Step to avoid passage over bridges; also knowledge of your favorite color....

:D
