The monetization  of gaming makes me too angry to enjoy any of it.

I'll stick to books, movies and shows from now on. I can't even think about getting into any new games without pausing to consider if there isn't going to be something cut out of it to be sold the day after I've completed it.

If you want it to stop. You need to organize. One or two people "Voting with their wallets" Will change nothing. If you want the industry to change you need to organize in a way were companies can't ignore you.

You should be more worried about the amount of content than you can access day 1, honestly. I don't really have a problem with unlocked disk content, mostly because I don't buy disks anymore, but still, if I'm still getting as much as I did on my PS3/2/1 at launch with other similar games.

That requires common sense to realize tho.

Unfortunately it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better, we are still within the early 21st century where pre-millennium companies don't know how to adapt their 20th century business model to things like the internet, easy file-sharing services, lack of need for physical methods of data transfer, rapidly changing hardware, globalisation. It's the same across the music industry, the film industry and yes, even books.

Yes it's going to get much worse, DRM incompetence, DLC abuse, microtransactions abuse, pay-to-win abuse, needing to view a spreadsheet before preordering a game to see what content you will be locked out of, episodic games - it's all going to get worse.

However, there are ways you can help yourself. Don't buy games new (wait for the inevitable second or third patch - ideally a year), try to purchase physical game copies so you're not purely at the mercy of services like Origin or Steam, ask yourself if you really need that bit of dlc before buying it, wait for sales, etc.

Don't give up, you just have to now adapt the way you act as a consumer. Good luck.

You might want to consider striking TV shows and Movies from that list actually. Considering the abysmal monopolization of television broadcast from companies like time warner and comcast who proactively try to nickle and dime customers worse then any EA pay to play scheme, and the vast amount of producer driver content cuts to movies only to be put back in as "special editions" of films when they are released to the public.

Pretty much books are your only source for non-shitty scheming, and with stuff like sad puppies going on in the hugo awards even that's looking less good and more shitty.

I'd personally rather just play games and have fun, instead of putting a social-economic issue to the forefront of every single one of my experiences. Just seems like the more practical thing to do, to enjoy or mock the product on the content provided instead of the hypotheticals of its existence pre-release.

Buy your games used (hopefully you aren't a PC Gamer and this is an option). I buy mine off of ebay for $20-$30 and it doesn't sting when I buy DLC (wouldn't is the more correct term, I haven't bought DLC since Skyrim). I started this practice when games started getting shorter and focusing on multiplayer (which is something I hardly ever touch). If it is something that I know is going to be awesome (like The Witcher 3 or Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires, I'll buy it new off the bat to support the developers).

Quitting gaming altogether when you have such an alternative as I have described is a bit silly. Even if stuff is locked behind a paywall, you'd be getting it cheaper than what people paid for the game new if you do it the way I described.

If you bundle enough streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video, and Crunchyroll, you can build a perfectly respectable cable alternative.

Hulu is owned and operated by Comcast. Comcast also charges massive costs to Netflix so they can stream shows, all the cable companies do in fact, and that costs go to you in order to support old cable. And all these sites operate under the same principle of DRM, you purchase the privilege to view content, not own it. The second your privilege is revoked, you lose it all.

So if OP is so concerned about these features in games, I don't see how they could support these features in show streaming.

If by entitled you mean treated with decency. It is amazing how much companies abuse people. Make my words Battlefront will have DLC up the arse. Space Battles come to mind.

I think ya'll should start working on a time machine.

I second this. The 90s and very very early 2000s had the best games imo. Not saying all the modern ones suck though.

Like Ori and the Blind Forest. 10/10 tbh.

And Civ 5, Divinity Original Sin, Pillars of Eternity, etc.

However, I do believe the gaming industry has fallen a bit from grace in the past 5-6 years, just look at Rare Studios. They use to hardly ever make a bad game back in the day.

But I honestly feel that things will go back up again, success is all about trail and error. I'm hoping Valve will realize their mistake and EA learn that they're nothing but greedy hairless apes. But even EA has been apart of decent games like Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning, however just like Rare, they've fallen.

New companies will arise and the old ones like Obsidian, Larian Studios and Runic Games will continue with their decent work.

As if I could ever quit video games though. I put in roughly about 80-115 hours of gaming bi-weekly, only cause I got laid off from work mostly but if I'm not sleeping or running errands, 9 times outta 10 I'm gaming.

I didn't choose vidya gaems, vidya gaems chose me tbh.

Good luck on your 2 weeks notice.
