IMO what's happening is all the crazy/interesting things are happening often outside of video games and nerd spheres generally, like in KPOP, or Disney movies like Frozen and Maleficent, or even sports and quasi-sports like Dota 2 etc.
Meanwhile many gamers seem to be clinging to the notion that you buy a console and play a steady stream of excellent games, it's ok to not play games and find interesting things to do outside of that realm every once and awhile.
That said, I happen to think FFXIV (for example) combines the best elements of the fringe min/maxing MMO aspects of gaming with the earthier story borne elements like in a Final Fantasy. I am continually blown away by the experience but I suspect because it doesn't "look" like a traditional console game final fantasy lots of people have not given it a shot. it takes to effort to find enjoyable games just like it did 20 years ago.
