The Ravens that is used by leliana should have had a intractable role in the game. The main times I seen they was used was during a cutscene when they were sent to the mages and templars but I honestly think they couldve been more useful gameplay wise and here is how, After reaching skyhold there should have been a system set up to where we can use the birds for ourselves on the field.
At camps that we establish out in the zones there should be a bird perch somewhere on the camps ground with a scout next to it and use the bird as messengers between us, skyhold, and other scouts who have info about the zone we are in. Functions would include using a real world time based system just like war table missions, with lengths depending on the request which include:
1.Request Materials- the bird sends a request for us where we ask for certain materials such as herbs, metal, leather. and cloth. The catch is we can only request for items that we have already gathered at least once so once you gather your first crystal grace then you can send a request for some. Depending on the tier of the item and amount will depend on how long into scouts bring your supplies. Also you can only request supplies that is exclusive to that zone so deathroot can not be requested in hinterlands, bear hide can not be requested in hissing waste, and cloth can be request for Val Royeaux but it will cost gold but have a shorter timer(or it can only be requested at zones were they drop whichever works best). This system helps use the inquisition more and lets use feel like we have more control, the influence we gathered we get a supply boost as well.
2.Scout Area- This function is so that the raven relies a message to the scouts and after a certain amount of time you a report on the enemies near that area. This function is done at camp also but the timer for this request is faster then the previous and the bird will actually come to your location shown on the map with a bird logo as it travels towards you and if you are in combat at the time it will fly in circles above until you are either done or run, and opening the menu wheel that as the mount there could be a option to put your arm up so the bird can descend on it like in the picture for the forum. From there you take the note and get a report of enemies near that camp or quest area from your scouts. Now you can prepare for whats ahead, if you turned in research of enemies in then the scout report will put the weakness resistance and damage perks of that enemy next to there name. And for zones with dragons the reports could give us a warning of a dragon sighting known to the area and tell us the element.
3.Rumors: Use the birds and scouts to give us reports on any rumors or secrets that may be tied to this zone. Our spynetwork seems to have a vast amount of knowledge on a bunch of things so we should use that to our advantage. From dungeons in the area like Valammar, or even hints at people who seem like potential agents, or hints to the status of the area like "red templars still have control of empress" then after we finish all the related quest it changes to "red templars operation successfully stopped" or things like "dalish clan located in whatever area of exalted plains. Just info like freeman of the dales still control the area" would let us know the progress we are making in certain zones with our quest.
4.War table operations request: So instead of having to travel all the way to skyhold to send a request for our troops to clear a path for us at the sulfur pit we can simply start that operation at the camp using our raven to send the request to our advisers for us. The request should still take the same amount of time but instead of leaving the zone we can rest in camp to restart the map to where we can cross the sulfur pits. This system for me at least helps not break up the flow of the quest in those zones. So instead of going back and forth if you have information you need then plant the flag, give a note to the bird, continue other quest in the zone, rest when ready, then boom now you can finish all the quest in that zone aside from possible story or companion quest without having to travel to skyhold just to start the operation and then come back.
So these are just a few ideas as to how as Inquisitor we could use more of the range our organization had. We have a bunch of scouts and soldiers and while we have advisers that command them directly we can still have them assist us more out on the field. Ive seen these birds out on the field alot and always felt like there role should have been just a little bit more. A system like these lets us feel like we are in control or at least communicating more directly with our scouts. If we ant a report right then and there we are the leader so a better system should be then having to travel all the way to base just for that or running around picking up supplies when we have people for that. While we can still do it ourselves having the option to put the inquisition in use is important and would make the inquisition feel more like a organization we lead and not just apart of like before.
