The worst place for us arachnophobes, IMO, is the Storm Coast. There are several very dark and sometimes very cramped caves with lots of giant spiders in them, which combined with the crappy way the camera works means you'll get a lot of sudden unwanted spider closeups. That was ... fun. Especially since I'm also claustrophobic. On the bright side, after an hour of two of gritting my teeth and suffering through that, none of the spiders in the rest of the game really bothered me anymore.

(Edit) As to why they are popular: because they freak many people out to some extent. It does annoy me because it's 1) kind of inconsiderate and 2) definitely lazy. If devs really want a freaky-scary monster, they should put some effort into designing their own instead of being the 678,579th case of jumping on the cheap phobia train. If being freaky-scary is not a priority, why not go with something less phobia-prone to begin with? One of the reasons why I appreciated Morrowind back in its day was that it remains one of the few spider-free RPGs.

I once had a boyfriend that didn't like spiders. I didn't know about it until one night when he walked out of the bathroom with the whiniest voice ever:

"Baaaabe.... you need to come here and look at this!"

"Ugh, I really don't want to see what you did in the toilet. I don't care how impressive it is."

"Just come here!"

"Fine..... What?"

"Look how big that spider is! Get it! Quick! I can't touch it!"

That should have been my first sign that it would have never worked out between us.

...Spiders are beautiful...in their way.

Dangerous occasionally and skittish.

Shy sums them up aptly.

I simply can't understand the fear of them, never have.

It's a phobia, which by definition is an irrational fear of something.

Now if someone had a bad case with something and that causes them to fear it, that's an anxiety not a phobia since it is a rational fear of something.

I knew the definitions

I just don't grasp them.

I wasn't saying you didn't. I was just pointing out that by the very nature of a phobia, it is something that cannot be fully grasped. Otherwise it wouldn't be a phobia since it can be explained rationally.

The second part was more just to drop some knowledge about the difference. :)

I mean I obviously have fears myself.

Spiders just aren't one of them

I don't like the way they move. The skittering and scuttling and the fact they always seem to run towards me.
People always say "they're more scared of you than you are of them" but they're quite happily parachuting into my bedroom!

I'd blocked out the storm coast. Eep.

You picks DAI to play and your afraid of spiders? What that heck are you going to do when you meet "blinky"?

I'm a huge arachnophobe and Blinky didn't bother me because he's more like a crab than a spider.

For me it's not a fear of them being dangerous, it's that I have a physiological reaction when I see them. I see them and suddently it's like a skin reaction and I can feel them crawling all over me.

Trust me, if I could avoid the panic attacks and have them not bother me, I would. It's completely irrational.

I genuinely hope I don't live to see the day that video games are censored because spiders are icky.

Ironically, Spiders.

Once you get to that part in the main story, I swear-you should have limited problems otherwise if you avoud caves, but I'm certain you'll encounter spiders along the way in some places and in some battles in the main story, particularly in a story quest area (Adamant).

. . .wonder if someone will make a mod replacing them with spiderman like they did with skyrim, complete with old cartoon show sound effects. . .

Hello guys,

I am here with quite unusual problem. I suffer from quite major arachnophobia, which makes me stop playing nearly every time i have to encounter these beasts. I wonder if anything or anybody could help me get rid of it, but i have another question.

Could somebody point me out locations where are spiders most concentrated so i could avoid them?

Thanks in advance

"RAAAAGH! FACE! YOUR! FEAR! FORWAAARD! CHAAAARGE! DIIIE, FILTHY CREATURE! EEEEK! DIE ALREADY! MANY-LEGGED C*NT WHY ARE YOU NOT DEAD YET! COMPANIONS! FORM A WALL! EEEEK!" *tactically withdraws because there are just too many spiders*

Please follow this manual written by a fellow arachnophobic. They still creep me out TO THE MAX. I can't help it. Something is just... SO WRONG about that entire branch of animals. *shudder*

Other than that - try to stay away from caves. Don't go to the Hissing Wastes - bosh'tets run freely outside there, especially in the western part of the map. The cave at the northernmost end of the Oasis is a spider cave. There's a massive one right under Caer Bronach (Keep in Crestwood) called "Snowball" - this one drops Healing Mist grenade recipe, though, so it may still be worth it to, again, face your fear and SPIT IN IT'S FACE. That's how I do it. You do it often enough, spiders in the entire DA series should stop creeping you out too much.

Further locations worth avoiding would be... well, any cave, really. Chances are you'll find spiders in those. Also, before completing Here Lies the Abyss (trust me, you'll know when the questchain is reaching the sweet, sweet climax) prepare to meet the little spiders. That's where the "Ironically, Spiders" meme comes from. At least I think it became a meme.

Scream, close your eyes, mash the attack button, and then scream some more when you open your eyes and you're still fighting. "Whywon'tyoudiealready?!" is regularly heard from my room.

Oh, one such could be "Hahahaha, it just HAD to be GIANT MASSIVE MO...FU...ING SPIDERS... hahahahaha" *hysterically laughs for two minutes before running equipment and ability check and charging in like a mad man*

Let's just say ...

... it might be difficult to avoid spiders in this game.

This is NOT a spider. Don't think about it in that way. It's a massive friggin' demony thing.

I prefer to stare my fears down if I have to face them in any way. In games, that is. If I met Snowball or anything such in real life, OH GOD FOR THE LOVE OF THE CREATORS RUN.

Plus, if you keep your eyes open, you can tactically WIPE the floor with your enemy, making you more effective, and the fight shorter. Good bye bosh'tets!

This turned out to be a good thing in Skyrim. Being an FPS of sorts (I'm playing a Wood Elf Archer), you literally CAN'T close your eyes.

It's a giant weird-looking crab. Didn't bother me in the slightest and I hate spiders.

I can do that with little spiders. DA2? No freaking way.

I can deal with spiders that are Snowball sized, even though I hate it. I can even deal with the Spider Queen in DA:), but house sized spiders are a no-go for me!

I have the same problem. When those evil monstrous bastards show I have to pause the game and walk around for a few minutes as I call them something else repeatedly. Then go back and focus on a different part of the screen until everything is dead.

There aren't many spiders (DA2 was a freaking nightmare with those house-on-eight-legs monsters). Some smaller ones are in the Fade (unavoidable, I'm afraid), with a giant one near the end (only seen in cutscene, not fought).

Sidequests I'd avoid are one that involves investigating a picnic site in the Emerald Graves, and going in the cave underneath the Crestwood Keep. There's a fairly large spider involved in each of those. The caves on the Storm Coast feature smaller ones.

Snowball (the one under the Crestwood keep) took me completely by surprise but wasn't too scary, maybe because of her colour sceme which is much less "realistic" than the tarantula-style generic giant spiders. Also, I was distracted by being amused at Cole and his awestruck "So many legs!" comment as she abseiled on us. :P

Really, I think those generic giant spiders are the worst, as are the conditions we fight them in, so anyone who can (learn to) handle them is probably good for the rest of the game. And the "stare fixedly at the hotbar and focus on the mechanical aspects of the fight" approach can help, too. Especially when reinforced by heartfelt morale-boosting swearing.

No, and there likely never will be with the difficulty we are having just doing basic cosmetic stuff. This game is not modding friendly in the least bit.

Maybe turn them pink? It would at least be harder to take them seriously that way

Really though, I feel all of you other arachnophobes up here. Only hours of playing the previous games has desensitized me enough to look at them at not really spiders. Playing on a low graphics setting actually helps a lot in this.

I'm with Hawke though, why does it always have to be spiders?

I don't mind spiders one bit.  My brother does not like them at all.  He is all  "KILL IT WITH FIRE!!" about spiders.  What is funny is that I really hate... moths and butterflies.  They freak me out and I curl up in the fetal position if one gets in my condo.  I make my husband kill them.

From a gaming standpoint, I really hate that the spiders spit poison in this game.  That's just rude.
