I used to have a pretty serious fear of spiders at one point in my life. Childhood traumas since this one big 8 legged fucker decided to troll me by choosing a spot on the wall so that when I woke up, s/he was RIGHT there in-front of my face. Well, good morning to you too spider. After this I had some huge difficulties playing this one level on Tomb Raider 2 which had giant spiders in a dark cave (while my sister kept laughing at me). Over time this fear of spiders settled down though I'm still not exactly fond of them, at least not of the kind that resembles the one which scared the bejesus out of me.
I don't have any problems with spiders in games now but I do think they are pretty over-used as enemies. Why can't we ever have nice spiders? *would totally use that spider mount* XD
Also, for those with no huge aversion towards spiders: have some photos of jumping spiders wearing water droplet hats. I seriously think jumping spiders are cute:
I do recall one game with "nice spiders" -- Dark Sun: Shattered Lands, one of the later A&D titles by SSI. You ran into a colony of sentient giant spiders in some mountain cave, and helped the more reasonable ones overthrow their unpleasant leader, after which you got free passage to your actual objective. Or something like that. It was a pretty good (and sometimes tough) game overall.
Now I'm nostalgic, that was ages ago.

There's the giant magical spider in NWN2, whose name escapes me at the moment. Ah yes, Kistrel. If you're nice to her she'll weave you a cloak.
Also, octospiders in Rama. They're aliens but that still counts, right?
I like that other people on here have childhood spider trauma - makes me feel less alone.
Anyone else encounter giant wolf spiders? They jump. and I mean they jump. (They're also super aggressive and go for the face.)
I had one as big as a ****** baseball attack me when I went down to the laundry room as a kid; no one believed me until it clogged/broke the vacuum a week later. I still go armed whenever I need to wash my clothes - and I don't even live in the same building anymore!
I love your party's commentary when encountering certain giant spiders though, it at least shows the writers know how ridiculous they're being with this.
Dorian: Just once, we should enter a cave and see normal sized spiders!
Varric: Then we'd know the world's ending.
I had one of those fall from the ceiling with a plop at night on my hand. I was actually playing DAO and killing the spiders in Mage origin and in the dark.
I go hysterical and I stopped playing in the dark since then. Also keep checking the area before sitting at my PC.
But I also take it out on the spiders each time I get the chance. From a distance. With a mage.
