Few ideas:
- A human Tevinter who is not a mage
- A dwarf who isn't from Orzammar or a surfacer, so Kal-Sharok dwarf (but I would perfer being exposed to Kal-Sharok by actually going there)

It's kind of hard for me to come up with an idea for a mage companion.
We already had the White Chantry Circle mages (Wynne, Vivienne), a mage from a Tevinter Circle (Dorian), different kind of apostates (Morrigan, Anders, Solas), Dalish mages (Velanna, Merrill).
So maybe a Ketojan? Or if not a Qunari, a mage from Tevinter who serves in the Imperial Army as an elite high ranking artificer. Someone whose primary duty is the drowning of Qunari dreadnoughts :D so not exactly a scholarly type.

We need either a Qunari mage who escaped the qun or never lived under it. My guess would be that the mage managed to escape his handler and now lives comfortably outside the Qun. Maybe he still has his tongue intact as well and is always on the run.

and maybe we wish s/he didn't have their tongue, because they won't stop talking about how great life away from the Qun is.

Nothing, in honour of his name. That's why we need him to come back!

A Seeker who can use their abilities to kill, who gained a reputation for being impartial when it came to Mage and Templar disputes in the Circle, as well as willing to punish either side if they messed them around during investigations?

Kindly like a Lawful Neutral version of Lambert?

How about a Dalish Elf that is actually a well respected member of their clan for once and not exiled for what arguably were fairly good reasons.

No Saarebas at all is better than open-minded 'Saarebas' with tongue and deep personality. Such violation of lore doesn'r worth the outcome, if they want such archtype they'd better use Tal-Vashot.

Actually you're right,

If found practicing forbidden magic, their tongues are cut out to prevent them from corrupting others.

I can't imagine how would they know forbidden magic though, if they never get any education. Unless there are black magic books lying all over qunari lands.

Yep Saarebas seem to all have sawn lips based on Ketojan and other concept arts.

Tal-vashot or not, in order to hear his/her story, s/he would have to be able to talk.

don't know if this has been said  as I've only read a few replays so far but for me id like a few more race specific classes and start up point like in origins where if you were dalish your in the forest but city elf etc.. and the dwarf noble and castles start points.

Humans -

Templar initiate

Chantry sister (becomes a thief or for a special twist discovers her magic and tries to hide it.)

Soldair (your a recruit in the army and your commander is a fool and sends you all off to die.  you refuse because the guys a moron and get put in the stocks and tried for treason)

i suppose i could think ov others given a little time.

Elf -

Emerald Knight - the elves revive them in secret and it becomes a new clan specific to the group and they travel from clan to clan(at the beginning) finding new members.

Dreamer - (mage) like the kid in DA2 who is half human half elf.

Slave (from tervinter) who escapes and can either join the queen or head to some other place and starts fighting for money and finds he/she is good at it. (kind of like fenris)

can't think of any others right now but here is something i like the idea of.

               Create character screen

Gender - Male/female

Race - Human/Elf/Dwarf/Qunari

Country of origin - fareldan, Orlai, Nevara, Tervinter, etc.. (you get the idea)

organisation - are you chantry or templar, qunari or terviter, pirate or bandit, noble or begger (the list could be bigger)

from here basic examples that become specific to choices you've already made

If chantry, (did you go there to hide from your past or did you join as a child)

Class Rogue, warrior, Mage. (specific to your past like {joined as child gives rogue or mage/hiding from past gives rogue or warrior [or to make things difficult mage who is hiding from everything else just cos he/she is a mage doesn't mean they use magic all the time hides it until gets caught]}

Basically i like a bit more thought into creating your character, (like your a mage from tervinter on the run for your life because you pissed off some hot shot  high up in government, and now you have to run to another country to survive. you make it to orlai or some other country and people don't like you because your a vint.

it would be nice to have the Npc's react to your country of origin the way they react to the elves.  like the people of fareldan hate the orlai people etc.

I thought of a couple more that I find interesting. Please excuse the rambling!  :P

-An uneducated hedge mage.

Spoiler

-A slave (Not a former slave, but still a slave in spirit and reality).

Setting: far north, particular Anderfells/Tevinter/Seheron, please please please. We got an excellent introduction of how qunari culture functions in second act of DA2 (probably my favourite part of that game), and some particular insights into Seheron from Bull, and I'd love to be able to explore the crumbling empire and the battles with the qunari. Especially given one of the outcomes with the Wardens, it'd be good to visit the Anderfells and Weisshaupt too.

In terms of characters - I really liked a lot of DA:I's companions, but I don't see many sticking around. Cassandra's tied to the chantry, Varric's already recurred in one game (wouldn't complain if he came back though), Solas will probably return as an NPC if at all, Vivienne is tied to the circle and is so Orlesian it hurts, and I sincerely doubt anyone with any concern for Cole would let a spirit go to Tevinter. That leaves Sera, Bull, and Dorian. Sera's batty, but any southern elf with any sense wouldn't go to Tevinter alone - although I wouldn't discount the possibility entirely. Bull and Dorian have the best plot connections, although in Bull's case, if you sided with a Qunari alliance he'd more likely return as an NPC.

In terms of companions from other games, Fenris would be quite likely, but I'm honestly not the biggest fan (... sorry). Also, if all the elven lore **** that went down in DA:I is going to have consequences, it'd be entirely possible that Morrigan might return. We may also bump into dwarven Shale (!!!) in Tevinter, who tbh would make a brilliant romance option. If we enter the Anderfells, and stray close to Weisshaupt, it's entirely possible we'll see wardens from previous games (Sigrun pleasee). All of these would of course be optional dependent on companion choices.

I'm also totally on board with Charade Amell. I'd love to see more qunari companions - definitely on board with a female quanri mage, would prefer not an escapee though, because I can't handle that much angst really. A qunari rogue who can also use gunpowder and all kinds of contraptions would be excellent too. In terms of more mages, a Rivani seer, definitely, and a low-ranking Tevinter mage whose political blunders meant he was an outlaw (would make a break from those haughty magister types). Would like to see a runaway Warden conscript too (warrior/rogue). In terms of elves, I doubt we'll see any Dalish because they don't travel that far north, and it'd be nice to get a more thorough insight into city elves, so I'd like to have one of Briala's spies.

Basically, dwarves, qunari, and spies.

Sentinel arcane warrior (or maybe a 2 hander) that's taller than the average human. (Boy was I surprised to be surrounded by 'giant angry elves' at the temple of Mythal. At least they seemed larger than the average Dalish to me) somehow the new protag interrupt him from his 'long sleep' (could be he's in 'stasis mode' or maybe in Uthenera) and finds out he's the only surviving member of his group.
Shocked and disoriented, but less grumpy than Abelas (:D making Abelas as the next companion is mighty fine by me too, though <3 LoL. Fan girl detected) his largest fear is that he will became 'quickened' but since the world is in a total mess anyway, his willingness to help (and sense of compassion) outweigh his own concerns.

Make him a romance option with different flavours:

1) If the protagonist is an elf, then it'll be easier to gain his trust and maybe in the end he could make the main protagonist an immortal just like him, stepping together in Uthenera at the cost of leaving 'everyone' (friends, family and the protagonist's past life behind) or try to convince him to stay with the knowledge that should he remain by your side, he would have to face the pains of death.

2) Non-elf protagonist with the many baggage and issues. In the end the protagonist can push him to stay immortal (resulting him leaving you) or convince him to stay which will make him mortal.

An Ancient Elven Female Arcane Warrior who fought in the climatic last battle at Sundermount against the Imperium, becoming one of the few who escaped alive and not in chains. Having never mastered Uthenera in order to sustain herself, she has spent the past thousand years awake and wandering the length and breadth of Thedas, witnessing history as it came and went, as well as the trials the People have endured.

Unlike those of her kin who've power-napped across the centuries and look at the days of Elvhenan with rose-tinted goggles, she's long since come to accept that the "Good Old Days" never truly existed and that until the People stop wallowing in the past, they can never find a future for themselves.

(As much as I love Solas, the Sentinels and the Dalish, they do often end up seeming like they're from the same planet of hats a lot of time as Javik in ME3... it would be nice to have at least one Ancient Elf in the series who actually enjoys the modern world, or at least has come to accept it.)

I've got a whole bunch of ideas that I think could be cool over the course of the next several games

Established characters I'd like to see return as companions:

  • Scout Harding
  • Maevaris Tilani
  • Gatt
  • Charade Amell
  • Luka
  • Korbin
  • Zither
  • Yavana (I know she's dead in the comics, but it's not totally out of the realm of possibility for her to have cheated death in some way)

Character concepts I'd like to see for companions:

  • An Avvar scout (dual wield or ranged rogue)
  • A Mortalitasi (Nevarran death mage)
  • A Nevarran Dragon Hunter (bonus points is it's a Pentaghast)
  • A Van Markham warrior (possibly a rival to the Dragon Hunter)
  • A Rock Knocker
  • A Raider of the Waking Sea (more cut throat than Isabela)
  • A Marcher warrior who is a Grand Tourney Rival of the PC
  • A Rivaini seer
  • A Kont-Aar Qunari (preferably a female; maybe a tamassran)
  • A Tevinter slave rebel (think an elven female Spartacus)
  • A veteran Tevinter slave gladiator
  • A traditional Tevinter Magister (think the type that Dorian and Maevaris disagree with)
  • A Tevinter battlemage
  • A Fog Dancer
  • A Saarebas

I agree with Yavana as companion and possible LI, I always like the arcane smarties, and she is just the best option since her mother is dead and it's unlikely have her sister and uncle back on a party.

Another cool concept that I would like to see is big dudes as companions (perhaps instead of a mount) We had an Ogre on Darkspawn Chronicles, just imagine have a Wyvern or the largest variants of Golems, a Pride Demon or a Rock Wraith would be fine too.
