Bioware, I have to say, WELL DONE! I am just absolutely in love with Sebastian Vael. The innocent charm, that sincerity in his voice, the softness in his gaze, the noble and righteous attitude, and his unconditional love to all by respecting his vows and offering a chaste marriage are all too good to be true. As a woman who wished others could see more in her than what she looks like I can respect Sebastian's desire for a chaste marriage, to me it proves that you are loved for who you are!

... That accent tho.   <3  <3  <3

It's funny really because even after playing all Dragon Age games and reading all the novels, Sebastian is still my Favorite!

Bioware should write a novel about him just for me!

Kudos, OP. Always great when you find someone or something in the game that enriches the story experience for you/your character.

For me, that character for my canon LadyHawke was Aveline -- on the rivalry path. The perfect foil to trouble-making Hawke.

It was basically, the noble knight::the scoundrel rogue; city police-chief::anarcho-illegalist noblewoman (lol "noble").

(Arishok confrontation)

Aveline: that does not excuse murder!

Ilda: Eh, I would have done the same.

Aveline: >.<

Arishok: tell me, Hawke: what would you do, were you in my position?

Ilda: I would defend my people to the last breath...

Arishok: ... yep. I knew you would understand. Qunari, open fire!

Aveline:  :pinched:  :pinched:  :pinched: !!!

Aveline: well the Arishok has lost it. Quick, we need to go maintain order!

Ilda: you do that. I'm taking Fenris, Merrill, and Varric with me instead. Bounce.

Aveline: ... *sigh*

City Guard: We're overwhelmed, help!!

Ilda: Get your men behind us.

Guard: They're too shaken up.

Ilda (to the guardsmen): If you leave, you're a deserter. You know what happens to deserters...

*guardsmen stand behind Hawke*

Guard: You'd make a fine captain-of-the-guard.

Aveline: >.<

(Jeven rally/confrontation)

Aveline: Jeven! You disgrace yourself.

Ilda: Hey wait a second, you people were with Varnell. So was I, save for the part where I backed out after Petrice incriminated herself! Abandon this idiot. Stand with me, instead!

Aveline: >.<

Jeven: D=

I think it's a case of "different strokes for different folks" here.  He doesn't appeal to me either, at least beyond his accent - but that doesn't make the OP's reaction to his character less valid.

For my (probable) canon Hawke, it's a friendmanced Fenris.  Yes, he has emotional problems, but he also has the self-awareness to know when he's out of line with his anger.  And in spite of his anger issues, he still tries to behave like a gentleman towards her.

I have no problem with Sebastien. I can understand where he comes from and he's a pleasant fellow to have around. Honestly, why does anybody hate any character in these games?

Because not everyone sees every character the same way, or tries to think about the "two sides to every story" part.

I absolutely love Sebastian. He's my second-favorite romance in the DA series. I've always rival-minced him because that's how I play my Hawke, but I know a few people who friend-mance him and wouldn't conceive of doing it differently. He's a great character and I'm glad to see a thread where someone likes him.

Honestly, why does anybody hate any character in these games?

For DA2 it's because they are boring and one dimensional and one is an odd, off screen transformation of a previously enjoyable character.

I also like Sebastian quite alot actually. Canon romance for my fem hawke. I think its the accent. He may come off as a little boring, but the romance itself, while beeing short, was something new.

All my Hawke's are lesbians, so no chaste romance.  Makes me want to go back and take a look at him.  I found him annoying, but he did have that tortured soul story, delicious accent, and BioWare gave him fab eyes.

Hmmm.  Second chance for Sebastian.  I decided to start a new Hawke play through...b/c yeah, I need a 10th.  Man, I loved those characters.  Really rich deep writing for a game, impressive.

I had thought Sebastian was a nice addition, though there was a lot of missed potential with his character's writing and depth. If he's brought back in future games, I certainly hope they develop him more. I've seen a lot of complaints that he sounds preachy and strict or uptight. The way I see it, with him mentioning his more colorful past, he feels he has a lot to make up for, therefore is strict on keeping himself disciplined. I believe that to be admirable. He wants to lead a life of substance and purpose, and he feels that's through being one of the few (as I see it) sincere Brothers of the Chantry. I suppose my mind-canon (a dangerous realm) has filled in many gaps, and I see someone who wants to distance himself from the corrupted concept of nobility and make a difference in the world, be it through the Chantry or if we nudge him to take his place as heir to Starkhaven.

I wouldn't call myself a fan, but sweet Maker, are his pixels fine. I can appreciate well-designed character design. It's perfectly sane, I promise.

The thought of Snarky Hawke romancing Sebastian amused me, so that's what I did for my canon as I did not play DA2.

I don't see why a DLC character should get depth when the main companions didn't

I think this thread is about Sebastian,

rather than whining about the game in general.

As for Sebastian, I think any DLC character, even a 'day one' character runs the risk of a lesser treatment.

Shale did ok, but ME's Zaeed and Kasumi were also a little lighter.

It seems like I have found my peeps! I too have Sebastian as my canon romance (whether it is because of his accent or character or my general interest on medieval nobility, who can say). I was quite happy to see that Keep and Inquisition listed him as official romance for Hawke and made up a little bit where DA2's vanilla game lacked.

It was simply a statement of fact.

Well Zaeed and Kasumi had less conversation style dialogue but they had a lot to say and a lot of characterization. Shale had as much as any other companion and even tied directly into a main quest.

Why should DLC have more depth? Let's see, didn't Corypheus have a major impact on DAI? Hmm. He does sound oddly familiar. As for Sebastian, he felt half-baked while the others had more substance. At least balance them out. To be fair, I had felt Anders needed enough depth for people to grasp what was going on. Not everyone has Rivaled the guy.

And speaking of Rivals, Sebastian sounded more interesting as a Rival. If anything, I'd have wanted to see what bang the buck could bring. ;)

He's a good character and I enjoyed his personal quest, but by DAI I was quite done with his troubles and wanted to blow up Starkhaven if I could. Same with Worthy.

I dislike him partly because of his accent, and I live in Glasgow the same city as the voice actor is from.

His accent is too earnest, too "Scottish TV actor" which is a real thing here. I think he developed a lot of his Scottish accent being raised in England and playing to English audiences. Compare him to other Scottish actors such as James McAvoy, Alan Cumming, Kevin McKidd, Gerard Butler, James Cosmo, Robert Carlyle, and you can see what sort of voice work it could have been.

The other part? The Black Prince? Moaning choirboy more like, prancing around in gilded armour bravely hiring mercenaries to avenge his family and weeping into lace hankies a lot.

Given the other party member he is in "slot competition" for, the other archer rogue Varric, suddenly it's not even funny how bad Sebastian is.

Also, nobody I know knows of a Scotsman called Sebastian. As an prince he could have been Lulach, also known by a nickname Tairbith (meaning "unfortunate").

As said, Shale was a completely full and "fleshed-out" companion (LOL PUNZ) but so too was Javik.

Sebastian was a bit of a short-straw, in many ways he felt like a badly-designed Game of Thrones-inspired placeholder for DA:I.

(Stark Haven? You have to retake Castle Stark? ORLY!)

Nah, I feel like Sebby-poo was a re-hashed Alistair. He even refs him in banter if you have Alistair stay a Grey Warden and Seb stick with the Chantry. But if you look at them on paper: Alistiar: bastard son of a king, contender to the throne, forced into chantry, goes 'omg teh seckz, we did it,' has to choose between Wardens or King. Sebastian: inconvenient throne contender, forced into chantry initially, wants a chaste romance, chooses between Chantry or Princely matters.

Both have great hair and I like their faces. Seb's accent... I wish it was genuine too. I completely ignore it since my imagination greatly approves of his pixels. Don't take me seriously, I overexaggerate the fangirl behavior.
