Someone LIKING Sebastian?! Has the world gone mad, or have I?

Sebastian is too good to be liked from the "shadow"folks of the Bsn.

LOL, and Alistair was a rehashed Carth Onassi, a former-soldier everyman, cuckoldedly overshadowed by your 2nd companions a female mystic (Bastilla/Morrigan), nipping your ear about every questionable moral choice...

 

But I barely used him in my previous playthrough. I've started a 2nd playthrough and will be taking him along once he's companionable.

Also, nobody I know knows of a Scotsman called Sebastian. As an prince he could have been Lulach, also known by a nickname Tairbith (meaning "unfortunate").

Because he's from Starkhaven, not Scotland.

I suspect his name is a reference to the patron saint of archers.

^ That would make sense. I mean, Sebastian acted like a "saint" unless you count his spicy history. Like any good fantasy story, they do like to overlap cultural backgrounds. For example, Orlais is mostly French, but in garb and masks they look like they stepped out of the Carnival of Venice.

It's just a wee bit jarring for me to hear someone with a Scottish accent call themselves Sebastian. I dunno what an equivalent would be, perhaps a gruff London type like Ray Winstone calling himself Lucy or something.

Don't get me wrong Sebastian Vael was/is hot AF but the whole chaste relationship even AFTER the wedding - ehhhhh really? I understand the guy made an oath but still geeeez talk about a libido killer. I dunno, I really was excited about the possibility or romancing a hot "HUMAN" that wasnt batshit crazy ( Anders )  - __ -

Eh Sebastian is all right as a character as he presents a refreshing contrast to the usual power-hungry would-be heirs to a throne like Anora, Harrowmont, Bhelen, Gaspard, Meredith and all that lot. Seeing an absolutely devout and priestly character being torn by more worldly matters was also interesting.

 

However I do feel he was far too indecisive. By the third act he should have been firmly on the path to Prince or Priest one way another. In the end Anders and Hawke made the decision for him. (AKA he blew up the Chantry and she chose to spare/keep him.) So in my worldstate he becomes a Prince. His views on mages wasn't that great either.

 

But Sebastian was all right over all. He really needed to lose that whole 'chaste' bit otherwise one or two of my Hawkes might have gone for a human male that isn't tainted or batshit crazy.

He's the main reason Anders never survives my games, Why  would i throw away my friendship with him for a guy who used me and murdered innocent people, Especially when i can still support the mages afterwords no problem.

Replaying DA2 and making a conscious effort to switch up my party members, so I end up using Sebastian, Merrill and Aveline a bit more.  The banter between Aveline and Sebastian about Wesley was sweet... if mildly entertaining to have trigger just after I completed The Long Road.

 

Kinda surprising he doesn't have anything to say during Prime Suspect, though, especially when DuPuis is claiming he lost his sister to this killer and wants to take revenge.

I wish Anders told me his plans so I could get Sebastian in the Chantry just before it blew up. He could watch the explosion from the inside.

He did decide, actually. After his personal quest in Act 3, he tells you that he plans to stay in the Chantry/retake Starkhaven based on if he's a friend or rival. His only condition is that he plans to do it after Elthina is safe. So he was committed to one or the other, but then Anders killed Elthina.

After Anders' crazy started showing in Act II, I went with Sebastian on my mostly-Diplomatic Hawke. I wish he had more romance content, but I was totally okay with the concept of a chaste marriage. I even searched it up to learn more about it. A lot of people have this huge misconception about chaste relationships. It doesn't mean kissing or hugging isn't allowed. It's about respecting your partner's boundaries and trusting each other not to "tempt" them into using each others' body for sexual release. They believe love should only be expressed through its mental aspects, like showing unyielding support for your partner and seeing their kindness/strength/inner beauty/etc.

 

So a kiss or a hug is possible, as long as both parties understand that it's to express their care for each other only. It's usually discouraged because it's easy to get lost in the physical sensation of kissing the one you love, but it depends on the "willpower" of the couple and recognizing their limit before it gets to that. Which may sound weird... I'm not religious, but I think it's sweet in a way. I was able to make it work for my Hawke.

 

I always cringe when I see comments like "He's a man, he'll give in eventually."

I totally agree with the original post, esp. about his accent!  Unfortunately, my Inquisitor had to oppose him in favor of Aveline, but that was done through agents.

I think the chaste marriage scenario only comes into play on the friendship path?  (I've never romanced him at all, so that's just what I've heard.)  But you're right, it is a very valid form of romance, one that may actually require a deeper level of trust than a romance that allows for sexual contact between partners.  And it does sound sweet!

I've seen a lot of complaints about Sebbeh wanting Hawke to be a virgin and all this other business, but that's where we need to fill in the blanks again. Seb was a party boy, so he wants to love a woman for her mind first, body later. wink, wink. I think DAI gave us more insight into Andrastean love. Being chaste would mean pure of heart, good intentions, etc. It's not about a bang-fest between private bits. Cullen said something about not being required to be a virgin. So waiting until marriage would have been Seb's personal choice, wanting to honor Hawke by giving her his best as a person before giving her his best.

 

I promise, there's no innuendo in my post at all.
