For my purposes, he's mid tier. He's an enjoyable enough rogue to me, I don't take him too seriously, and I like having a contrast of personalities sometimes. So I bring him along occasionally.

I can see how a few love him and many hate him though.

I don't agree with him most of the time but I don't see how fanatical he's made out to be by others. Yes, even including his 'invasion' of Kirkwall in DAI.

Sebastian is only really good for using elemental damage bows from the Item pack DLC.

Wait, why don't you find his invasion fanatical? If Anders isn't dead, he invades the city even though he knows Anders is no longer there. He's either punishing the city because his enemy used to live there, or he's using it as a front to expand Starkhaven's territory.

If it were for pure humanitarian reasons, he wouldn't be trying to invade but just send supplies or labor to help Kirkwall recover.

I thought his "cameo" in DAI was good and felt in character for him. But I would consider that scenario morally ambiguous, if not zealous.

A front to expand Starkhaven's territory isn't something I consider fanatical at this point, in this case.

And Kirkwall requires order. Its messed up too much, too often, too far. Its whether its Sebastian's order that's the question.

He is zealous but not the (dictionary definition) example of what I'd consider fanatical (aka overzealous)*.

I consider him problematic and eager and wrong, but I don't agree with what I consider exaggeration of his character.

*I know we use 'fan' for so much nowadays, but in this case I wanted to use it by its older meaning. One can be a zealot, in itself, while still being likable and reasonable in many ways at many times. Its fanatics that are single minded and make everything about their subject and the maximum spread of it.

Basically I find Sebastian to have issues and to do things I don't necessarily agree with, but I think I can see his point of view whenever he does or expresses anything. For true fanatics, its much more often that you agree or disagree, near entirely.

I love Sebastian, too, OP. Big time! I don't even understand why, exactly, but the heart wants what it wants, right?

Honestly, with how many diverse gamers playing Bioware games who feel their love is justified simply because they DO love, thus love anyone you want to at all, why does any Sebs fan have to justify loving Sebs? Because he's unpopular? LOL. Is that a good reason to decide not to like someone? Makes no sense to me. I'm happy to see another really big fan girl, besides myself. That makes the Sebastian fandom a whopping 12 people! (lol, j/k)

I'm really intrigued to hear from actual Scottish people how they receive him as a character, particularly based on how his voice actor did his accent. I kind of figured Alec Newman was using a standard, perhaps even unrealistic Scottish accent for him, but there is a reason for that. It's because a lot of people around the world can't understand Scottish dialects. I have trouble with some, too. I can tell it's a bit phony, but it sure sounds more Scottish than not. At least for that. Alec's voice is gorgeous no matter what accent he's using!

For DA2 it's because they are boring and one dimensional and one is an odd, off screen transformation of a previously enjoyable character.

If you have to do their missions and listen to their banter that's more character than I get from Justice League cartoon.

You have to have at least one "straight arrow" among your companions, half of whom are questionable characters for one reason or another.  That said, I just entered Act 3 and this is my first playthrough with Sebastian.  My Hawke tries to encourage him to retake Starkhaven, but he keeps coming back about his devotion to the Chantry.

Oh God, not Sebastian lol. He sounded so sissy like! Especially at the end when the chantry blows up and he throws himself down to the ground "Elthina nooooooo" with that low voice hahaha :D

Hey, this is the DA2 forum. No DA:I spoilers. :P  I'm referring to him in DA2 only. Funny though. I really thought Sebastian's threat would be an empty one made in anger. It's worth sparing Anders just for the lolz of making Sebastian a psychopath.

I got this info at the end from DA2 when you let Anders live. Sebastians text states, that he returns to Starkhaven, claims the throne and gathers an army to invite Kirkwall (something like that). So technically, it's not a DAI spoiler. How successful he is would probably be a DAI spoiler...

I agree, if he had made an empty thread in the heat of the moment, I would have been ok with it. If he had challenged Hawke ina  duell over Anders life or if he had convinced the remaining templars to help him seize the apostate who blew up the church or had joined Meredith and her cause for the sake of stopping Anders (and Hawke), I would have been ok with him. He is right to be mad at Hak for sparing the guy who killed Elthina, but stomping away like a little boy and planning on  returning to destroy Kirkwall  and murdering a lot of innocent people on the way , is really mad.

Just a very minor spoiler: Sebasian is kind of aprroaching the Inquisition, but because I knew what he did, I ignore him at the moment, so I don't know, how much he would be involved.

And just to make it clear again: I have no problem with Sebastian prior to the end of act 3 - I think, it's kind of important, to have church people in your inner circle, since the church of Andraste does play a major part in many plots from DAO to DAI. So you have Leliana in DAO, Sebastian in DA2 and a few characters in DAI who gives your character (and sometimes the player, I'm very ignorant in matters of religion I have to admit) some much needed views. If you play Vanilla DA2 (without the DLCs) you can still talk to Elthina, who gives you some insights, but she is easy to miss. So Sebastian as a companion is not the worst choice by far. He might not be as flashy and interesting as some of the other characters, but he brings a different persective. I wish hey had given him a better end.

^I would slap them both with a rubber fish if I could!

BTW: Aveline and Sebastian have some pretty interesting conversations.

I was surprised by some of their conversations, actually! All this foreshadowing...

Aveline: Are you loyal, Prince?
Sebastian: Guard-Captain?
Aveline: To Kirkwall. Are you loyal? You're set on a title in Starkhaven, but we're having a crisis here.
Sebastian: This isn't just Kirkwall's concern. If this chaos spreads, Starkhaven will need a strong ruler to beat back the tide.
Aveline: I've seen greater men than you use that excuse.
Sebastian: Noted and ignored, Captain.

Sebastian: Do you have many dealings with the knight-commander?
Aveline: Please don't start with that. I'm not a templar. I'm the captain of the guard. We arrest burglars. The knight-commander never gives us a thought.
Sebastian: Grand Cleric Elthina is worried about her. She's stopped taking the Chantry's advice.
Aveline: Her job's not easy. Certain... forces in the city are allied against her.
Anders: Don't try to be subtle. I'm right here.
Sebastian: Clearly, our templars need strong leaders.
Aveline: Until something changes, that's Meredith. And we must give her any support we are able.
