Yeah, Mass Effect should be a TV series like Game of Thrones if it is adapted at all.  ME 1 doesn't fit in a 3 hour movie even if you chop out two of the planets, all extraneous material and push through without a lot of character interaction.  It is much better suited for a 13 episode tv series structure.  ME 2 is already structured in exactly the manner you want a TV series to be in; lots of self contained subplots woven together with a few callbacks to an overarching season long story.

A big point which a lot of you are forgetting is that a movie series doesn't necessarily have to be a trilogy. Unless HBO pick it up I have major reservations about a TV adaptation even by AMC or Showtime as the writing might be good but the production values would probably blow big time and at the other end of the spectrum if it got picked up by FOX you'd probably have the opposite problem as they attempt to reach a broader audience to pay for the added production values and end up with a made for TV movie painfully prolonged for years.

A Mass Effect television series would definitely only be possible on a movie channel, in particular HBO. Put this on a major television network such as NBC, ABC, FOX, etc., you'd just kill Mass Effect before it even began. Only HBO would be able to pull this kind of show off in a way people would appreciate. It certainly would be costly, especially for the high production value, but it would reel in plenty of money if done right. Mass Effect is truly one of those video game franchises that actually has the capacity to appeal to a large audience outside of just gamers.
