There's liking them. Then there's viewing them as infallible. That's how we get Steam. In the end all companies care about is their profit margin since they can't operate without money. People claimed Steam/Valve was the messiah of gaming... and look at it now.

And how do companies even gain the means to profit? By satisfying customers more than dissatisfying them. Enter CDPR's good reception.

Having this from the get-go in TES6 or Fallout 4 wouldn't make a whole lot of sense, seeing as the Skyrim modding community and the modding community for those will basically be one and the same and likely going to have the exact same reaction the second time.

The reaction wasn't the problem. It was the legal backlash that was causing issues - taking something someone created for free and then using that to make money without proper approval and/or compensation is a legal nightmare. THAT'S why Valve backed off. And it is why they will likely try again when there is a game ripe for modding but before it has years of fan-created interdependent creations.

As I like to say; as bad as things are now, there are always, always, ways it can get worse - in ways you cannot even possibly begin to imagine.

For example, for all of Steam's flaws, I have four letters to send a chill down your spine at the thought of a world without Steam:

I have to give steam this, despite the blunder of paid mods being on bethesdas and valves shoulders, they were quick to respond to fan outcries and resolve the issue. No digging in their heels, screaming that anyone who doesn't agree with them is wrong and needs to leave gaming, or demonization of non-compliant steam users like we've seen a lot of devs and producers do in gaming lately.

Just, an admission that things went wrong, and a resolving of the issue, in less then a weeks worth of time. I really would have loved if it could have not happened at all or got solved before the internet drama exploded, but beggers can't be choosers, and the time this took to resolve was lightning fast in todays standards.

All I mean is that we need to stop putting companies on pedestals. It's bloody hard to get them off once they're high enough. We need to keep them grounded and disciplined like a pet. Reward good behaviour and punish the bad.

I guess Bethesdas investors went them a bunch of angry messages about the plummeting skyrim approval rating. Either that or Gabe pulled an Obama "I had no idea any of this was happening guys, I'll end it now don't worry".

I'm glad I was able to contribute by generally doing nothing and sleeping all day.

Good will is their bread and butter, It's worked out quite well for them.

Well, there is that whole "You'll have to pay for some content" thing from a few weeks ago...

If goodwill pays the bills I'd be surprised... goodwill is a marketing technique only.

Good point. Not too much cause for concern from CDPR. Not yet, anyway. So people are understandably quite high on them.

The maker of SkyUI is apparently quitting and removing everything after the payment system got cancelled after realizing how much he made the entire community hate him. Serves him right honestly.

Bethesda: Theses paid mods... the rioting is intensifying to the point where we may not be able to contain it.

Valve: Why contain it? Let it spill over the Nexus and ModDB, let the bodies pile up in the interwebs. In the end they'll beg us to sell their mods.

Do you have a link to where he said that?

Apparently the comment section of SkyUI on nexus got locked down as well.

No link, because he's said nothing since he made SkyUI payable. When Valve released this announcement today he almost-instantly wiped his files off Steam Workshop, locked his Nexus files and comments, and privated his Steam profile.

Wow... I can understand locking comments and his Steam profile... but the files? Seems like he's chucking a hissy fit over Steam going back on the paid mod scheme.

I don't understand the protest against this.

1) Steam taking majority share of the profits just because it's hosted on the Steam Workshop.

2)  Massive amount of legal issues using other people's mods as a basis for the paid mods.

3) Potential copyright issues.

4) Putting what was a free product behind a paywall.

5) Paying for bugfixes and Bethesda gets paid for other people fixing their own games.

Take your pick.

More like he saw the immediate siege that was about to befall him and burned everything per-emptively. I personally don't blame him, internet drama has become a dangerous game with how so many are willing to Dox and SWAT people they don't like. Probably didn't want people hacking into his stuff out of a sense of vigilante justice or whatever, now that he knows he's alone against the horde.
