It can be difficult, but it can certainly be done. The transition from friends to more than that isn't too far, and sexual tension can happen. I usually don't flirt with women unless they start first anyway, so it's not usually a problem for me.

I think opposite gender platonic relationships are absolutely possible given I'm in a TON of them knowingly and willingly. If anything, the problem is when someone thinks I'm flirting with them when I'm just trying to be kind or joke around.
