I've read about Dragon Age Inquisition crashing systems, and this had never happened to me until last night. I do admit though that I was sequence breaking, so I was taking the game places it wasn't designed to go. I used the map hole in the Hinterlands to get to the Gull and Lantern before securing the crossroads or going to Val Royeaux to meet with the Chantry. The scene with Fiona and Alexius plays out, and that opens up In Hushed Whispers on the chore table.
So I completed that quest and then went to the crossroads to get Giselle. That opened up the Chantry mission. The Heart Burn mission was also available.
So I went to Val Royeaux and that all played out as it should. It was amusing to see Fiona there AFTER having conscripted her before this. But I ignored Sera's arrow and Vivienne's messenger. I went back to Haven and walked in to the Chantry. The screen just went dark for a few minutes but still showed the menu bar and the dialogue lines of the NPCs. Then it came back. This was supposed to be the conversation about the templars and then Leliana informing of Blackwall, I think.
So I went to the chore table and there was no Champions of the Just quest like I was hoping there would be. So I left the chore room and used the map to try and travel back to Val Royeaux. The map showed everything it was supposed to, including the Sera and Vivi "!" marks.
Then I clicked on the map icon to travel to that location and as soon as I did my entire computer shut down.
I tried clicking and pressing the keys, but it was shut down. I tried to hit the power button but it didn't turn back on. I had to hit the main power switch in the back off and then on then I pressed the power button and it started up. Gave me the improper shutdown message and all, but everything worked fine after that.
I have not tried to repeat these steps.
I'm just wondering what causes this to happen to people. How can a game shut down a computer? At most all that's ever happened is the game itself crashes and closes. I've never had that happen to me before this. The only thing similar to that to ever happen to me was on my old XP computer, and that involved the Internet and a simple computer restart. I was not connected to the Internet while playing Inquisition.
The only thing I can guess is that it triggered some failsafe where the computer protects the drive from having information written to essential parts by whatever program. I think this is called "Data Execution Prevention".
Has this happened to anyone else, and what were you doing in the game when it happened? Is there any information about why this happens?
Also, I am on patches 1 and 2 only.
