Hello! I've read about visual diaries here and there, and always thought they are for very artsy people who can do really nice things with them. But lately I've been considering starting one; I have lots of things that I want to get off my chest but don't feel like expressing them on a written diary. I feel more like drawing them. I have a very nice Moleskine style notebook, that I bought because I loved the red colour of its cover but never used much. I'm thinking of using it as a visual diary. No worries about perspective, proportions and shading, just letting my hand go free.

What do you think about this idea? Do you know about visual diaries or kept/are keeping one?

This is a very very good idea IMO, there are so many things that words just can't express. And well, Moleskine... ;)

I saw lots of Moleskine art thing in Tumblr but most of them are actually the "Moleskine drawing book that contains only finished stuffs that I can show people with so much pride" so probably not the best examples. TBH I get one of that, the little moleskine where I draw my elf with my favourite quotes. XD

After that it depends, do you have any intention of showing it to anyone, or is it just for you? A friend of mine keep a "secret sketchbook" that she always vent in and never let anyone see it.

"Moleskine drawing book that contains only finished stuffs that I can show people with so much pride" That is such a perfect definition of the visual diaries I've seen so far xD Your little elf drawings with quotes are lovely  ^_^

It will be mainly just for me; as I said, I don't want to worry about making it right. But if any time I'm able of coming up with something nice looking, I may post it here and on DevArt :) I think it will be good even for the rest of my drawings, having a little space for absolute creative freedom will give me more confidence and keep me motivated to draw even if I don't have much time. I think.

I think it's a great idea, Vor! I think I'd like to start one as well. I agree that it seems a good way to keep the creativity flowing and as motivation.  :)

Or probably to Tumblr? For some reason I don't like putting WIPs anymore to Deviant Art. Deviant Art feels so formal that it's like a portfolio gallery, so now mine only contain finished, polished stuffs. But tumblr's a great place to do a dump, WIPs, etc. I see lots of professionals are also releasing their WIPS etc to Tumblr.

This is a great idea! I was losing heart on some of my drawings because I can't seem to get it right, and in my frustration, I just drop everything. Not that I want to stop drawing, but just that stooopid foreshortened eye! I've been so bent on doing it right, sometimes just doing is what matters. My sister got me a gorgeous leatherbound DAI notebook so I won't be using that ;-) off to the supply store!

Plus I'm running out of heads I wanna draw... :D

Yay Qween and Pro! Let me now if you finally start one and how it's going :) I started mine today; not flashy drawings for sure, but I felt better after expressing my feelings and it was fun making quick little drawings with different things (I used colour markers & pencils, and black pen)

@Ceru I have a forgotten Tumblr that I started to display my food pics on (my poor Facebook friends complained of feeling hungry every time I posted something) I still don't feel very sure about showing my drawings there; I have the impression that it's much more unforgiving that DevArt. Even if it feels like a formal gallery, I like DevArt because you don't usually get rude comments (at least I never have)

I started mine earlier too! Just a few quick drawings with a calligraphy pen (never mind that I don't know how to do calligraphy ), it was quite fun.  :D

Well count me in then! My Moleskine's rather filled with my tiny elf that obeys no rules of perspective or anatomy or whatever it is, doing whatever she pleases XD

So, by curiosity how does your visual diaries cover looks like? Just curious, which size? Mine's Canson black A5 (Moleskine wannabe, it really looks like a Moleskine with that ribbon and back pocket but much cheaper XD). The best thing is that it's easy to make it either A5 or A4 and can hold India Ink very well. Up to now it's filled with things inspired from books & movies (read: Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, Ghibli) things...

This is a great idea :) I have a sketchbook with cream paper, which allows for the use of white pencils. I would probably not make a diary out of it, but definitely a doodle-book :) I'll have to start taking it to work with me, so I can doodle during lunch break.

Yay! Visual Diary Team!  :wizard:

Here is my Moleskinish notebook (brand is actually Liderpapel) it's also A5 size, which is perfect for me to do these quickies. The pages are squared and not blank, but they have a nice creamy colour, similar to the one of my sketchbook.

Thought I might share what I did in high school for my philosophy class.

We were required to keep a philosophical journal, and I decided to include drawings in mine. My prof was so happy with it, that he assigned full marks on it, and a bonus. With all the other assignments that we had, finals, etc. I ended up having good marks for that course. Now, the bonus from the journal actually put me ahead of the best guy we had in class (who was also a good friend), and I ended up taking the award for philosophy that year.

The funny part was that my friend kept on nagging me about having cheated with my drawing skills to get the award even years after we finished high school (we went through undergrad together).

TL;DR: A visual journal helped me nab the philosophy award in high school :D

@Tesh: Bwahahahahahahahahahaha that's the BEST story I heard lately XD

@Vor: Oooh that's pretty! How many g/m² it is? Mine's at 100 gsm and it's holding normal ink & pencil quite well but not Copic marker.

@Tesh That's an amazing story! :D Behold the almighty academic cheating power of visual diaries! :D

@Ceru I've been looking but it doesn't say... I think it's 100 gr, it can hold markers but only single traces (if you make a couple passes, you can see the marker on the other side of the page)

PS: Yeah I bought it even when I didn't need it because of its pretty red colour. I'm a material girl in a material world

Does this medium have to be permanent? I just spent a 1/2 hour in the shower drawing on the wall with my son's bathtub crayons... eye balls everywhere....

Bathtub crayons? Is that a thing? (perhaps I didn't know because I don't have kids) I sooooo need that!

I guess as long as you enjoy yourself, I don't think it matter if it goes away with water
