When you first talk to Hawke in Skyhold you can ask him what Varric says about you or something like that. I've only heard him say something like "Only good things I promise" and "might be able to solve Blondie's mess". Then again, I've always had high approval with Varric.
If you do/say things to get disapproval with Varric, would what Hawke says about you vary?
