I think the writers said it all, and I doubt they are going to change their minds:
"...Iron Bull: Some high-ranking women wore ornamental crap with t*ts hammered into it. One good shot, and all that cleavage gets knocked right into the sternum. Real messy. Good on you for going practical..."
It is not even close to a good reason. Both real life and fantasy shows us that A ****** HUGE number of people risk their lives for vanity. From health damaging outfits and products to life risking surgeries and other medical procedures. Be it breaking ankles due to a high heel or dying while filling body with silicon sometimes vanity matters a lot more than health or life.
Men trying ti enhance their muscles or women pumping their breasts are common cause of death specially when said people try to do it spending very little money.
Thing is: People have different priorities.
"Oh yeah but you missed the point, thing is that people die if they wear boob plate" - Yeah, right. If you give me a game with 100% functional armor I will totally accept that. But with open chest Varric and Iron Bull and super high orlesian fashion Vivienne everything the writters say about "realism" sound like HUGE COLOSSAL GARGANTUAN SUPERMASSIVE BULLSHIT.
They are trying to make a point, one I could agree, specially when I don't care if all unpractical armor goes for men, I would love to create a queer final fantasy kpop Inquisitor with side boobs and side ass. I don't mind objectifying men while giving practical armor for women, it is fair as far as I'm concerned (seriously). But go on pretending it is not a political act but a matter of logic is bullshit. I have infinite+1 reasons to say so, from the fact that the armor could be built to present boobs over the actual plate just for fashion to the most basic idea that being a magical world allows us to make a lot of impractical things like fighting in Vivienne clothes (or Isabella's) and a lot of **** in the middle, but seriously, Inquisition itself laughs at it's own claim to present practical armor.
Are they seriously trying to convince me that Varric with an open shirt showing his chest hair is not certain death while a Qunari hits him with a two handed sword? C REE OWLS LEE ?
Also, I suppose lorewise barriers are perfect and infinite since usually fire (specially a huge dragon breath) would burn mage clothes in seconds. I could point so many dangerous outfits in Thedas through so many characters, including in Inquisition that the whole boob plate becomes ridiculous. It is like The Hulk talking to Thor about how ridiculous it is for Superman to destroy a building. The phrase "the joke is on you" comes to mind when I think about Iron Bull dialogue.
I don't know how they picture some armors protecting people in Inquisition but they are highly delusional if they think they went practical. Bioware, quit mushroom and acid, please.
