The problem is Cassandra has the face of a man and the body of a man.

   You and I remember the climatic (no pun intended) romance scene with her very differently.

Who says armor that looks realistic can't also be attractive?

(to Roly Voly) Suddenly it'll all make more sense if it turned out VickVeel's game suffered a model glitch so that Cassandra's character model got swapped with a character model that was male and this could have all been solved if a single screenshot had been posted.

Awww... I'd just gotten to my spider round of how some spiders apparently rub themselves in malaria-infected blood for perfume and my theory that the mosquitoes likely have monopoly on the perfume market catering to evarcha culicivora... :(

I have a slight idea of what you just said but am afraid of saying it because maybe I'm wrong..

Then again who says all armor has to serve only protective functions? It's been cited that people use armor for multiple reasons

still like the art

  So your suggesting he maybe suffered some sort of Ace Ventura / Sean Young / Mr. Winky reveal and it scarred him?  Okay, I can headcanon that!

Counter-question, will female boob armour mean male armour will get Bat Nipples?

(to Sifr) That depends; are we talking bat-shaped nipples or bat nipples like from "Batman & Robin"?

... or are we talking about a bat named Nipples? Because I'd totally dig that as a companion to replace Barkspawn.

Armor serves no other function except protection. That has been true throughout the entirety of human history and into the current day, with kevlar helmets and flak jackets.

Armor occasionally did have cosmetic touches designed to make the wearer look more impressive or intimidating, but not at the cost of sacrificing protection. You're not going to wear armor unless it protects, because it's heavy and cumbersome and uncomfortable. With chain or plate it also requires maintenance. It's a pain in the @ss basically.

That's not necessarily true; you seem to forget ceremonial armor (even if it is sometimes coupled with other protective measures, e.g. the Swiss Guard wearing Kevlar vests under their armor).

Also, there are plenty of examples in history where people still insisted on wearing their cumbersome, actually dangerous armor because it served other functions (e.g. display of rank, allegiance, or a particular understanding of honour) that were even more important to them than protection. I'm thinking of the late Knights in their shiny plate armour (who got ripped to shreds by the plebs wielding cheap crossbows), or the late Cavalry (who got torn to pieces by machine guns and tanks).

It can also be argued that while some armors (e.g. police riot gear) do have protective qualities to them, clearly, their main defense is actually deterrence, i.e. not getting attacked at all.

Ceremonial armor was almost always real armor that just had some other features added to it, like using precious metals for decoration or adding plumes to helmets and such. I don't believe there was any ceremonial armor that exposed someone's chest or abdomen. In any case in the DA series your characters aren't wearing armor for triumphal parades. They are wearing it into battle.

Because they are wearing armor into battle it should look like it fully protects them. That isn't to say that you couldn't have characters that are unarmored if it makes sense for their character type...like Isabela for instance. But characters that do wear armor should wear designs that look like they protect against taking an arrow or sword in the gut.

Fair enough, but even so protection is clearly not the only concern on the minds of their wearers (or smiths). Otherwise templars, for example, would simply run around in run-of-the-mill plate armor, but no: They take pride in their emblem, and the emblem itself serves its purpose by striking fear into the hearts of apostate mages and by reassuring civilians.

(I think we kinda agree again here, don't we?)

(BTW: Ceremonial armor that is useless against common threats (thin plate armor vs. firearms, for example) cannot be called 'real armor', I think.)

I thought Vick was being ridiculous from the beginning.. but this has reached a whole new level. What comes next? Cassandra sounds like a man? I am excited to find out.

Oh no, you see.  That person has got Cassandra on a very creepy pedestal.  She would be "perfect" if only she looked better.

I'm so glad that this is over a video game character and not over a real person.

I'm all for lots of flourishes that add more character to the armor designs, or reflect the personalities of the character wearing it. I just prefer at base they start with something that completely covers the character's vitals and then working from that, add the bells and whistles. Or at least that's my preference for warriors. Rogues and mages are potentially a different story, as they could be completely unarmored or very lightly so.

So you would prefer maybe (not suggesting just asking) there are no shirtless or barely shirtless barbarians with light chain weave, hans?

I like the idea of my guys muscular build showing off along with the scars of battle. I don't think I should have to just be a qunari for that to happen

I wouldn't mind barbarians like the Avvar or Chasind fighting like many ancient Gauls or Germans. (unarmored)

I'm just not crazy about it with the Qunari because they are described as being the most technologically advanced race in Thedas, and the faction with the most powerful army. The whole naked ninja routine doesn't really jive with how the faction is described.

You've got a good point there.  It does seem like an odd mix and it doesn't always play well.

I don't mind certain boobplate armours, but I really dislike chainmail bikinis. I view sexualisation as wholly unnecessary in this scenario anyway. You're going to war, not to a brothel. Why would you need your cleavage/chest on display? I suppose some players just like to ogle their PCs which, whilst as valid a reason as any, isn't really one I can empathise with.

I would be okay if players had a choice between putting their PCs and companions in plate armour or chainmail bikinis and it were completely optional, but the problem is that I wouldn't want random NPCs strolling around in the bikinis, whereas I suspect those advocating for its inclusion would want to see NPCs wearing it.
So even when we reach one compromise, another issue crops up. How would we resolve this?

Ok so first of all I was just thinking about armor types and outfits.. I personally don't want to get into physical attractiveness, barely wanted to go into the subject at all to be honest. I only quoted the point about subjectivity.

I'm just saying more people would probably find Cassandra cuter if she had more stylish/body emphasis armor.. it's not really that complicated. I'm not really saying anything about anything or the merits of people generally, I'm just saying what kind of armor/styling/look people like isn't random or subjective.

You have clear evidence all over the thread that it's subjective, thanks to all of these people talking about their opinion about what kind of armor they like

Random has nothing to do with it

This. It's a poor design when it comes to battle. Having a space between the breasts would divert blows directly towards the center of the breastbone, resulting in immediate death. Even a fall while wearing an armor with a design like that could possibly shatter the breastbone. So again, your stupid idea is STUPID!!

                                                                                     <<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>

Hmph. Reality may very well dictate the physics you propose. But, I was under the impression that I'm playing a fantasy game. ... which by its very nature, means disingaging from actual physical laws.

Going the route of practicality, means that the 2H swords in DA2 are simply unwieldy and impractical to be used in actual combat.  Yet, there they were.  Personally I see armour molded to a proper male/female physique to be aesthetically pleasing.... no need for nipples.... that Batman custume looked silly with the nips showing.
