Yeah, but pirates were also considered lying, cheating scum, and the only reason people like them today is because institutions like Hollywood sugarcoat them with stories like Pirates of the Carribbean or Assassin's Creed 4.
Bronn also is a [expletive].
Hardly inspiring people to look up to.

It's down to personal opinion, but for me hearing the tale of the the woman who ran into battle, bared her breasts at her enemy and and sliced his head off whilst he was drooling over her isn't quite as inspiring as hearing the tale of the woman who ran into battle, bested her enemy at swordplay and sliced his head off.

I wouldn't say it was those things. Pirates have always had a sort of mystical anti-hero image long before either of those things. As do Vikings and many other factions, races or societies that did horrific things in horrific times. Rape/pillaging and razing wasn't something exclusive to the "bad guys". In war, as anything else--the "bad guy" is just who you're staring at from across the battlefield.

I agree about it being personal opinion. I think the fact a woman being on a battlefield at all is inspiring. If I were beside her, fighting and she kept me from getting gutted, she could do it however she wished. Inspiration and valor are wonderful things, unless you're lying face down in a pool of your own blood. I'd rather be an unfair victor than an honorable corpse.

That's a fair point. I guess I'm just looking at it from both a modern perspective and my own personal perspective, where a 'clean victory' is the ideal and dirty tactics are something of a last resort.

I understand that. And I think anytime someone is willing to do the honorable thing when it's easier to do the dishonorable thing is something to be applauded. Looking at it from my perspective though, I am a grown woman with the body size of a small fourteen year old boy with the strength to match and I am deaf, so even if I could hear the enemy coming--which I wouldn't, all I could offer was a slap match. :P I would have to carry a large arsenal of ball-kick tactics to survive. Won't even try to claim otherwise. Even if I were a trained and highly skilled fighter, I would probably do whatever I could. Better to live and fight another day.

Your claim before is that these people aren't capable fighters.  But they all are more than capable of handling themselves during a fight. Mary Read, Blackbeard, and the fictional Bronn.  No matter what you personally think of them, they most certainly can/could fight, and do it well. Your claim that they aren't capable is false.

You're entitled to not view Mary as inspiring, no one is saying you should. But IMO, any woman who kicks ass and defys societal standards to make her own way in life has my respect.  I could care less how she did it, she did what she wanted to do.

As for pirates, I don't need Hollywood or video games to tell me how to think of them, times were harder and poverty was rampant.  Not to mention that many of them were abused by legit sea merchants or in the Navy.  It was society that created those pirates, along with opportunities.  If I had to choose between dying in some gutter or cutting some throats for wealth, pass me the knife.

A good example of people turning to Piracy in modern times are the Somali Pirates. Most of them were simple fishermen just trying to make a living.  Until foreign powers declared their waters a free for all. Asian countries started looting their waters illegally and drove them away while european countries began dumping their toxic waste. They had no choice but to take up arms and defend what they had.  Now out right piracy is that country's only money making industry.

@KBomb, lol! I totally agree. I'm 4,8 and hardly a track star. There is no way I'm getting into a fight with any man and if I did, balls will be kicked, dirt will be thrown in faces, hair will be pulled, flesh will be bitten, and if a boobie pop would work, well boobies will fly if it'll give me an ounce of an advantage to gain the upperhand and win.

I still don't see how someone who is more than capable of beating their enemy would need to use tricks to win a fight.
Bronn, for example, was certainly cunning and a good fighter, but he still had to resort to knocking a statue onto his opponent in order to deliver the final blow.
Had he only known, he could have made things much easier on himself simply by ripping the corset off the nearest lady to use as a distraction. :P

I'm certain he would have. Say what I will about Bronn, I can't deny the man's a great opportunist.

What things?

All kinds of things really, most people would rather eat a cheeseburger than a vehicle. They would rather be given millions of dollars than shot in the leg.

In this particular context, they would rather look cool than frumpy or boring.

Yeah well I'm losing interest here rapidly.. I actually was going to post more armor pictures to compare what looks cool or not but people constantly skip right over those searching specifically for posts that trigger something about social justice or posts where they think they can comment on them to own the person or something or be cute or have nice little 5 word quips.

I mean the last 2 pages are so amazingly off-topic it's.. yeah.. I think I'm tempted to give up here.

I mean capable female pirate fighters? Like.. what? haha. Honestly I'm not really being critical of that though there are some interesting facts in there... but... it's just not my particular interest.

Anyway I'll just throw it in anyway, I was gonna say people would rather look like this

Oh, absolutely. But, Cassandra's style is a far cry from WoW. What elements do you think are present in the first picture, for example, that are objectively better-looking than her current aesthetic?

@The Baconer: Huh. Does Cassie actually ever wear anything like that? All I remember is her ugly-as-hell tincan breastplate she wears while walking around Haven, and that definitely didn't have a pretty tunic like in the first two illustrations in your picture. I can't remember any hooded outfits for her either, although it's a long time I played DA:I last, so I may have suffered from memory decay ;)

Barring the hood, they can be found as different permutations of two base sets (surcoat or trench coat)

There a bit closer together than many might imagine I suppose.. I would have to say the details on the GW2 person are much more interesting to me, the whole crazy vine/flower thing seems pretty cool. There's also the asymmetry with the shoulder bits whereas Cassandra is just straight up and down, although a lot of the time symmetrical things look cooler to me in this instance.. it could just be because the shoulder elements for Cass look like someone was stacking shells from Cephalapods or something. The knee plate things for the GW2 char are also a lot more detailed, theres just a lot more details basically everywhere. The second picture just has her with kind of this very generic cuirass basically.. eh.. so yeah.. I don't know.. lots of things I'm not sure about.

Plus I think the gloves are way too big for Cassandra, there's also the issue.. well it depends which exact picture we're talking about but the 3rd Cassandra kind of looks like some sort of Sci-Fi outfit almost with the hard geometry in the central piece. In fact DA2 seemed to have a lot of strange kind of cubist/hard edge kind of things that just didn't really feel organic or natural to me overall.

The next biggest thing is probably the colors because the silvery/white/gold combination seems to have more interesting contrasts to me whereas Cassandra is steadfastly brown/muted. It kind of looks like Cassandra has sort of like a monk frock on at times, not like this impressive shiny Paladin armor. Even Game of Thrones which is supposed to be the inspiration for DA has some comparatively flashy things like Jamie's situation. The GW2 isn't really the most extravagant but it's definitely not as plain.

It mostly boils down to not enough flash/excitement for me basically.

Finally I kind of feel like that giant eye thing looks like it's a decoration at some kind of egypt-themed hotel.

Well, the first one looks like the armor you get for her if you choose one of the rogue or mage armors. It's the plain quilted overcoat.

I dunno about Faora's, since it seems more Mass Effect-y, but I'd love to see something like Sif's for a rogue character.

Also I happen to think there's a pretty high correlation between popularity and the presence of something valuable, maybe it's not the most popular, but perhaps the second most popular thing or something... but rarely is it not at all popular.

Sure, but thats not enough to negate the existence of subjective preferences

For example:

It mostly boils down to not enough flash/excitement for me basically.

And I think those armors are excellent. See? One subjective opinion vs another. Even your wording acknowledges that you have an opinion that might not be universally shared, but your opinion still exists, even if its a personal preference

Unless you want to rationalize that I might be lying or kidding myself, which is such a logical fallacy, its almost too chaotic to argue

WoW armor looks bad because it tends to be overstyled technicolor vomit, which seems to be the opposite of your misgivings with Cassandra's look.

Color is changeable in-game, making that less of an issue since the player will be able to customize that according to their own tastes, though I'm sure many prefer a muted or darker palette for her.
The eye thing I completely disagree with. Seekers/Inquisition have a cool logo. Definitely not something I would consider objective.

Do you think Cassandra would look better wearing something like this?
