Not in my opinion. But I don't think Natashina wanted her double post to be used as ammunition for an argument like this, so for the sake of being needlessly amicable I will leave it at agree to disagree.
I didn't, not at all. I've gotten a chance to talk to several folks from this thread in PM and they have been all polite, respectful and fun people to chat with. These are posters from both sides of this current debate. Some of them I consider friends, including Snake, Ares and Artifice. I don't like seeing people that I consider friends and/or fun acquaintances ripping each other apart of armor styles in a video game. <sigh>
I'm of the belief that most people in the world are inherently good. I'm not naive, as I am very well aware that there is plenty of horrible, ugly, nasty, cruel people in this world. I've lived in big cities/suburbs for over 20 years of my life and I do pay attention to the world at large. Yet, I believe that most people individually are inherently good. I see evidence of this time and time again. One of the places it can go wrong is on the internet.
Here on the net, all we have is our words, and a picture for our face. We use smilies and gifs to replace facial expression as best as we can. We don't have access to little crucial details, like body language. All we have is our opinions and words here. Sometimes, we cling to them so tightly that we starting losing the ability to be compassionate, to be civil, to learn and grow and develop new perspectives. I've been guilty of it, several times, but I'm trying hard to make sure that I don't lose those things. I don't think most people want to lose those things, and for the most part I don't think anyone sets out to be cruel or rude on the net, but it's hard when it's only your words, your beliefs and your avatar. That includes me.
We live in such an amazing time. We have computers or consoles that allow us to experience these amazing worlds. We are from all over the globe, united by a love of the genre of video games we play. We have storytelling and art taking directions that have never really been possible until the late 20th century.
I don't want to sound preachy and I know how corny I sound. I don't expect anyone else to take this as some sort of example of how I expect anyone else to be. I'm fully aware of human nature, and how much we can suck. We're human and of course we're going to get passionate about what we believe. We'll get heated, bicker, fight and sometimes, do extremely cruel and horrendous things to each other.
I can't do anything about that. Human nature won't change, but anger/passion aren't the only aspects of the human existence. When it comes to things like video games, I wish we could spend more time celebrating what we love instead of tearing each other apart over differences of opinion.
