I agree that this is probably where we're viewing it differently.  But I'm not sure if I'm seeing why the having gated NPCs restricts how you RP your character.  The only way that it restricts is if you absolutely must have a certain combination of PC sexuality and NPC romance.  Otherwise, you still have the same amount of RP options, no?

Thiiiis. Like, if you're ONLY willing to play a heterosexual pro-mage elf supremacist who's hot for blonde lady elf mages then... you're going to RP yourself into a hole. And not the fun kind.

You have to be a little bit flexible.

Sexually ambiguous LIs is the best way in my opinion.

I'm not sure if I understand the issues with the DA2 LIs being 'unrealistic'. There are four characters in a party of 9 (including Bethany and Carver) that are bisexual (10 if we count Hawke who may or may not be bisexual depending on how you rp him/her). It's not even half of them. And only two of them are openly bisexual; the other two barely make any references to their sexuality at all. It doesn't seem out of the range of possibility, given that we've seen that there are a lot of bisexuals in Thedas.

That being said, I actually prefer the ME3/DA: I approach myself. It sucks when there's a character that you wan to romance who is gated from your gender/race. But, if it was that important to me, I'd rp a character for them. For example, even though I really wanted to romance Cullen with a male qunari, it clearly wasn't that important to me to romance him given that I've done 4 playthroughs and have repeated Dorian once without ever creating a human/elf gal for Cullen. Such is life, I guess.

Yeah, I used to be all for having all-bi LIs. It didn't bother me a bit in DA2, nor did it feel unrealistic - then again, I'm a bisexual with bisexual friends so I never thought Hawke's ragtag bunch o' misfits was somehow "unlikely"...

But having had a taste of Sera and Dorian, I'd never want to go back to the way it was. I think it's so important for DA as a setting to show that, yes, there are gay characters, ones that have a prominent place in the stories they tell. If we didn't have them, we'd have three games with a bunch of straight and bi folks, and no gay people. What kind of message is that?

So if I've gotta adjust the character I wanna play a little bit, it's totally worth it to me.

Same message they are giving with only having straight, bi, and gay LIs instead of leaving it ambiguous thus the LIs can be any.

"Oh, you aren't of these three? Well, too bad."

All I want is to romance the dark haired leading lady whom the player meets in the first few minutes of the game and has an important role in the main plot as a female player character.

You guys can have 80 female options. I just want this one thing, once, in a Bioware rpg.

You mean Bastilla, but bi?

And Dawn Star. And Ashley. And Morrigan. And Miranda. And Cassandra.

I think there's certainly a trend here.......

Morrigan doesn't count. You don't meet her in the first few minutes of the game.

Well, to be fair, on the sexual attraction scale, the only one not represented is asexuality, right? Are there other sexualities besides hetero, gay, bi, pan, and asexual when it comes to sexual attraction? I'm sure there are but if I, a super left leaning, social sciencist and New Yorker who volunteered for years at an LGBT center, can't think of them, I wonder how well known they are.

The romantic scale is a separate continuum. I hope you get representation there that you are looking for, but aren't those two different things? I'm asking because I genuinely want to know.

Yep!  And Aribeth too.  The hair color might not be as important, but I'd certainly like the opportunity one day to romance the "leading lady", who is ALWAYS written as a love interest for male player characters but is off limits to the ladies.

I'm all about quality over quantity.  And a lot of the times, it seems like the romances with the most content, and which have the most potential for interesting role play, are the ones with the leading lady.

I've made a thread about one of them. I don't know if the OP wants me going into detail.

They're talking about something called "demisexuality." It's a term for "I'm only attracted to people with whom I have a connection." At least that's the description I've heard. I'm not convinced it should be spoken of in the same breath as LGBT, seeing how it's not discriminated against unless a demisexual happens to be in a relationship with a person of the same sex.

I know what you mean OP. I'm still really bothered by Zayn leaving.

My thread seems to be a magnet for crappy, unproductive comments.

Try not to take it too hard.  Most of the more active threads generate some unproductive comments, BSN or not.  <hugs>

No doubt.  This is probably one of the few of the longer romance threads I've seen in awhile.

You're fine, CDR.  Just smile, thank them for bumping the thread and move on.  Also, this thread has surprised me.  It's extremely civil and even the snark is overall minimal.

Just something to consider: Romance options have preferred genders and races (or not), but they don't care what your opinions are, how you treat people or even what you look like!

That's actually the only reason I started posting in it. The more controversial threads are so draining!

Also, Hanako, feel free to go into as much or little detail as you please. I welcome all these discussions, and a relevant tangent is still relevant. :)

I gotta admit, this thread has had some good ideas amidst some of the heavier debating and heated posts.  As well as reading the occasional troll/dismissive comment.  I hope the lurking devs and writers (and they do lurk, make no mistake) have gotten at least few entertaining ideas out of it.

It could have been worse.  My very first thread on the BSN was asking why Cullen was considered fanservice.  DG himself came into the thread to comment, but I had no idea the hornet's nest I accidentally kicked up.  Thankfully I wasn't flamed too hard once folks realized I was new to the forums.

I know how that is! Your current most popular thread seems to be the one full of those morons who like to throw around the word "entitlement" a lot. I don't think it means what they think it means. ;)

My first and only thread before this one was so sensible that it only had a few responses and fell to the second page before the next day.

I am grateful, though, that the unfunny snark comments appear to be kept at a minimum. It could indeed be much worse, and I won't try to jinx it.

For me the only thing I have been bothered by since DA2 is the increase in openly gay characters.

I get gay/bi people will play the game so they should get a fair share of options to them of course.

But when I go into a brothel in DA2 and my only option is a male elf then I have an issue lol.

If your gonna be fair then be fair across the board.

I was shocked to see Anders become gay after playing Awakening and then going to DA2.

I think rather than having openly gay/bi characters romance in general should be built up and then as you approach the level of romance being achieved their sexual orientation should come into play.

So if your a guy and the girl your romancing is gay then once you reach that level you get that "friendzone" conversation with "I am gay" at the end of it when your character presses for a reason why.

It would make things more interesting too as you would need to also find who is compatible with the character you choose to be.

The Anders line "Does that make you feel uncomfortable" when then results in a rival status if you say yes is just terrible and ignorant as if a gay person wouldn't understand that a straight person isn't comfortable with the advances of a gay person lmao.

I think finding your partner would just be so much more fun and then you can be pleasantly surprised too when you then find out that stiff upper lip character that took you ages to get to romance then romances alot quicker when you choose the opposite sex as she is bi but prefers women so romances them quicker.

Make it fun, interesting and open but not thrown in your face.

Yep.  It's also a matter of ignoring bad apples that are trying to drag this off-topic too.  ;)
