My eye color actually ended up changing during the CC (I liked the blue with the goldish white inner ring,) but other than that, I had it planned out for months.  I had no idea who I was going to romance, because none of the male LIs seemed striking enough to me.  I was keeping an open mind.  It was after playing the game that I started to really like Iron Bull.  Cullen however was unexpected and it worked very nicely with my human mage.   Even set a mage-friendly world state for the extra touch.  Mage Warden with pro-Mage Hawke.

  Meredith huh?  Nice.  That must have been funny.

Yeah, months before release I heard that Sera was "like a female Alistair" and I was excited! THEY LIED TO ME :P When it was becoming more clear that she wasn't, I went in figuring I'd probably romance no one or possibly Josephine. I ended up flirting with Cassandra and Dorian (I knew it wouldn't lead anywhere). I took one flirt with Josephine which for some reason prompted Leliana to hound me about it, then talked with Josephine and it just didn't feel right, so I went with no one. Cullen with a mage seems really sweet especially with that forbidden romance angle (I've seen my girlfriend do parts of that). Circle mage Warden makes even more parallels too.

Haha yeah, it was. Talking about how bad she was, then my Inquisitor saying she hoped she is a better commander. Ha.

Edit: I killed the thread! I'm sorry! I tend to do that.

I never heard anyone suggest Sera was like Alistair, I had heard she was originally described as a "brat" which had alarm bells ringing for me. I went into DAI trying desperately to give her the benefit of the doubt and it was blown in her first scene. She has still provided some of the best laugh out loud moments (sadly for her often by trying to get under the skin of someone else and having it backfire) but yeah I have a real problem with bratty. I keep wishing Harding had been a romance and Josephine had been fleshed out a lot more.

I honestly don't remember where I heard she was like Alistair. As the game grew closer though, she got progressively less appealing to me. When I heard she could usually be found in the bar I thought: "Great, Dragon Age's first lesbian is going to be a drunk. That's really progressive." Though she didn't turn out like that, what we got really wasn't any better.

What do you mean by "fleshed out a lot more"?

I for one would have liked her character to have been fleshed out more in general, not just her romance. Then maybe I would like her enough to romance :P

For starters and in no particular order and probably fairly chaotic thoughts... as a character I would have liked to see more of her diplomatic skills and intelligence in conversations, her personal quests don't seem to show off her own skills as well as I'd have liked. I would also have liked confirmation that after saving her life she did get her family's trading license re-instated with Orlais and to maybe hear later that the fleet building was going well, or she was negotiating new trade deals or something that touched on what would have been a big deal for her as her family comes first to her. One of my favourite scenes with Josie is when you talk with her about the various events she's been navigating the inquisition through to gain influence for you (Sera's lack of clean shirts and so on) so more of her actually wrangling others into line would be interesting too maybe. I also like the way she handles the Marquis in Haven regardless of how you reply.

From a romance point of view I think there should have at least been a conversation with any non male human character about how such a relationship impacts her and her family's expectations because she's not only a noble but the heir to her house and the importance she places on her family... being in a romance with say a female qunari should probably lead to discussions about the impact of that especially given the current lore that says there's no gay marriage and that it's a noble's duty to marry and produce heirs. With a male human inquisitor (non mage at least) I think the question of marriage could have and probably should have come up possibly at the time of discovering Josie was engaged to Otranto.

One of the big things missing for me though was Josie showing she was really interested in a relationship, she never instigates anything and even if she set up a romantic dinner or something like that and showed she was actually invested as well, that would help I think. For the most part it felt very one-sided especially since she's actually more responsive in the banter showing the Blackwall/Rainer courtship thing it actually makes her lack of active interest more obvious in the romance side with an inquisitor. This is all in my personal opinion, I think there's a lot of potential with Josie I just think for me it felt... impersonal quite often.

Also I find it ironic she mentions spending time alone requires avoiding someone noticing and then you're kissing in the gazebo having passed at least 40 odd people to get there from Josephine's office when there are more private options closer at hand... but that's more to do with the way my mind works than anything I suspect.  :P

That's a really good reply. Summed up lots of my thoughts. To add to that though, I would have really liked to see a side of her that didn't have to do with diplomacy or politics. I haven't done her romance (but according to what you said, I wouldn't like how one-sided it seems), but you really only have one conversation with her that isn't about that. The one on the balcony. It's not a particularly long exchange either.

I just feel like she's a bit of a one-dimensional character, unfortunately. Hear me out. To me, she's polite, and only polite. Being polite does not make her kind or noble. It just makes her polite, which is her job, and it's honestly a bit scary that she never turns that off. Obviously, she is not mean or evil or anything either, but I just have trouble seeing much of her that isn't her being diplomatic. It probably would have helped if her personal quest showed a different side of her instead of the exact same side. I barely know any of her opinions. Does she support mages etc.?

Was there any romance that people were satisfied with?

Because it seems most if not all were lacking something or some element to it

Well, you're getting responses from different people, so of course not. Personally though, I wasn't satisfied with either of my options.

Well I thought I'd try and bring a more direct question as to what was unsatisfying that way if BW devs check the thread they know exactly what the gripe is with the romance design in the game.

Personally I was mildly ok with Cassandra (only LI I romanced both times) but I did feel it was lacking content which made me feel disconnected to any possible feels I should have received.

There are people in Val Royeaux who actually talk about how the embargo was lifted after you complete the quest. But I can see how it would be better coming from her mouth instead of randomly being triggered by random NPCs.

I'm hoping in a future DLC this comes up. Her VA is all for Josephine getting married. Maybe the new Divine will change the Chantry's view on marriage.

I thought they were well done, for Cassandra the poetry part was the highlight of the romance and for Josie I guess it was the disney princess aspect

That'd be cool.

I can easily see Leliana doing it since she is changing almost everything else, especially if she is in a romance with the Warden.

Cassandra I could see as possible with her being as big a romantic she is.

Vivienne is trickier, but I'm sure there is some reason she could.

Yeah the poetry was ok. Her love for Varric's books was quite comical too and enjoyable.

Disney princess? I haven't romanced Josie (and won't play the game ever again probably lol)

..Is it the fight for Josie aspect you are talking about with her other suitor in Val Royeaux?

No, but I did enjoy the duel though

I was referring to scene when you basically start the romance with her

Unless I'm mixing something up, the poetry and book scenes aren't part of Cassandra's romance.

'Disney princess' refers to a few things.

The duel with Otranto

The lack of a sex scene

Her foot popping when you kiss her

The overall sweetness of the romance

etc

It was originally used as an insult by some who didn't like her romance, but the Scribblers took that term and turned it from an insult to a badge of pride.

You read poetry to Cassandra during her romance quest.

Well I see the Varric book incident as still trying to win her favour so it's still relative to the romance aspect I guess lol

I caught her with her love of Varric's (presumably) cheesy romance novel, but I've never had poetry come up.  There is a scene in the romance where she's reading poetry for the male PC.  The romance novel scene happens no matter what, provided you do the quest of course.
