Actually its not just sexually biased but racially biased as well. Female Elves get the most options, 6,  followed by Female Humans at 5. The rest gets 4.

So what we should be doing is hating on Female Elves with their romance privileges. Down with the romtriachy ! Romance equality for everyone ! Sadly, they are a mystical race that doesn't exist.

To be fair, one of the straight female option will leave them at the end of the game. There is another who is a liar who decides to own up his mistakes and he too, could leave at the end of the game. Then there is one who is part of a totalitarian culture and can be made to remain in that said culture.

The gay male options could leave them with one who could either return to his homeland or another one who could be made to remain part of a totalitarian oppressive culture.

The lesbian female options leave them with either and adorkable Disney Princess or a childish Chav brat.

By contrast, the straight male option will either end up becoming a Divine or just be an adorkable Disney Princess.

So while the straight male has only 2 options, both options will almost always end very well. Being a Divine is not a bad thing, reforming the Seekers is not a bad thing, not doing either of those two things is not a bad thing and the adorkable Disney Princess will stay as our ambassador.

No dealing with recovering drug addict lover or no dealing with heartbreaks due to bald pajama eggheads or heart wrenching lies from a former Orlesian soldier or a childish brat with little character development or no dealing with Qun crap or no dealing with possibility of your lover going back to his homeland because he wants to emulate you or something.

There is something positive in everything.

More good points, but doesn't Cassie leave you if she becomes Divine? She and the Inquisitor share some final tender moments together, but beyond that, as far as I'm aware the relationship doesn't carry on? Once again, please correct me if I'm wrong.

PS; If my writing gets really messed up hither and thither without my notice, it's because it's 3 AM...

I think its odd that the last one in the series is the one that makes both elf LI female only. Fenris, Zevran and Merrill were all bisexual options, so if you wanted to romance an elf in the previous titles you had your pick of the litter. I however do sort of put Merrill in that same category as Cole in the "Too innocent" to romance category. "Daisy" should be kept as innocent as the white snow on the ground of Thedas.

I put Merrill firmly in the "little sister" box on first sight. Love her to bits as a character, but it would have felt wrong for my snarky Hawkes to romance her. Fenris is my favourite LI from DA2, closely followed by Isabela.

I'm not sure what this says about me personally, but I was only able to romance Merrill once as a male character.  On any lady Hawke I've had though, she's in the little sister category for me as well.  I'm still trying to figure out why that is the case for me.

Mine from DA2 is actually Anders, and thank goodness that's no longer fighting words on the DA forums.  Folks are too busy being upset about Dorian and Krem existing or that the PC is a religious figure to talk much about Anders anymore.   :P

The hammerhead was my nighmare.

Beside this...I'm still hopkng For a dwarf LI. If there is one thing I regret a Little about DAI is an unromanceable Varric...

Not only that, but Bianca looks atrocious. Her personality isn't much better. Lazy job by Bioware; what Varric sees in her, I'll never know.

Still, when the two "mystery romances" weren't yet confirmed, and they mentioned nonspecific race-lock (and at the time, no mention of being female-only), I'd hoped so much that Varric was one of the mystery guys. :(

Former Varricmancer here.  I remember back in August when I had to set my Cadash/Varric ship ablaze.  <hugs>  It was a sad day.

Allan mentioned last year in a thread that office rumor says that Mary Kirby doesn't enjoy writing romances.  I suspect that she's had this thing with Bianca planned for some time.  I don't think it was lazy, but it felt rushed.  It felt like that quest was cut a little short, and chances were missed to actually talk to Bianca.  I know this game had a lot of time in development, but that sequence felt kinda tacked on to me.

When it comes to Ms. Kirby, if you look at the characters she's done for the DA games, none of them were romance options for the PC.  I don't expect any romances to come from her, but I think we have potential in other areas.  A lot of people have received Harding very well, even asking for her to have a fully-fledged romance in a DLC.  So that gives me some hope that BioWare will finally offer the first dwarven romance in the nearly 16 years of games that have included the race, even if Harding isn't who they go with for future games.

Same here. I was expecting Varric to be the race restricted romance.

That's what I heard too.

Also, and no offense to the men, but where is there LI that could die and/or leave them no matter what in the DA series?  I mean, Isabela you can get to come back if you have enough rep; Leliana is dedicated to the Warden to this day and will change religious law to stay with him/her; Morrigan can be followed through the mirror with a romanced Warden; Merrill never goes anywhere.  Cass you can keep if you don't make her Divine (which is easy, just tell her not to;) Josie doesn't go anywhere.

I'm not saying what's good for the gander is good for the goose, but I think if BioWare keeps insisting on a tragic romance (or two in this game, if you count Blackwall's reveal,) it would be nice to see the shoe on the other foot.  Besides, I may not be a straight guy, but I do play straight men in DA games from time to time.  I think some variety in that department would be welcome, at least by me.   :)

If you are on PC, I can show you some cheat codes.  Including one for the Mako which gives it 3xs the booster power for jumping.   ;)

You can think of Leliana's as tragic if you choose to destroy the Urn of Sacred Ashes, you can have done a lot to curry her favor right up to that point and have to put her to the sword unless she's been hardened and intimidated when you do it. (Remember before the introduction of the expansion that was the only way to get the Reaver spec) She still comes back, and both Blackwall and Solas survive their tragic love. Alistair might fit in this as well because if you wish to keep Loghain alive, Alistair has one of three options: Marry Anora, Become a Drunk or Be Executed. Even if the Warden becomes Queen in the first game, she becomes mysteriously absent in DA 3 just like all the others, having disappeared for at least 3 years; leaving poor Alistair pining for his true love.  It seems Alistair gets screwed over royally all the way around unless you stick him on the throne alone or as the 'footstool' of Anora. Oh wait, those still suck for poor Alistair.

I still find it outrageous that we got an unlikely Qunari romance before getting a dwarf romance. I hope we can get something for Harding. Poor girl got shafted. She might be simple and not a unique snowflake like everyone else, but she's cute, sweet, and dangerous! What more could one like?

Also, I just really don't like Bianca personally. Every word that dribbled out of her mouth just oozed of smugness and trying-too-hard-to-impress-with-my-gigantic-ego. Plus, her eyebrows looked like they were about to fly off her face, and that really vexed me.

Now why haven't someone on Tumblr made an artwork of that ?

Bianca is better than any of the multi-player characters in both Persona and Physical Appearance. I'm seriously hoping that Lace becomes a fleshed out romance in the upcoming DLCs, even if she is just for dwarves though she is the same voice actress as Liara *wink wink*

I might dig them up later.  For now, let's just say that we got to put someone on trail for throwing goats at Skyhold's walls, yet this person sold out the location of red lyrium, betraying Varric's trust as well as not listening to the explicit warnings he had made that the crap was dangerous as hell; waited months to let Varric or the PC know; then has the nerve to threaten the Inquisitor and the only reason why she gets away with it is because the plot demands that Varric's "true luv" remain untouched.

That's the short version.

I don't know for the look. But as a character, I wanted to just Gibbs-slap Varric and put some sense in him just for dating her. The character feel quite forced to appear that great fabolous character that people should recognize why Varric is so enamoured with.

Well...no...failed intention. If before DAI I was almost on the "well, I'd like to help Varric reunite with his true love, if my character can't romance him" now I'm "I want to put her in a cell and never hear of her ever again, and give Varric a better girl."

I wonder if Bianca was written to be liked or hated. Because the first wasn't really effective with many people, the second was very effective.

So, sooo true. I have so many questions to ask Bioware in regards to this, and while asking them I'd like to grab them by the arms and violently shake them in a dramatic fashion.

The longer version involved me ranting something about throwing her in irons and forcing her to work with Dagna for the duration of the game.  A few other things too.  I think the words, Mary Sue came up more than once.  I know I mentioned the murderknife at one point.

Definitely seems like a character that was intended to be loved or hated without much middle ground.

Regarding Bianca, well, she has the voice actress of Kira Carsen (SWToR) which is my favourite romance from Bioware. So while I understand the things she's done wrong I just couldn't fault her for it. It's Laura Bailey talking...damn, I just figured out why I play mage on Hearthstone.

Laura Bailey has a wonderful voice, one of my favorite VAs...yet she couldn't save Bianca from her writing.  I rolled a male Jedi in ToR to romance Kira, so I feel the love there.  However, Bianca can...take a long walk off of a short tall cliff.

This, and all of the above.
Self-absorbed, superior, untouchable and barely able to be criticised. That and she got to walk away after threatening to feed my Inquisitor her own eyeballs.

I appreciate the sentiment behind the thread, but I still think that counting and comparing is not helpful. Thankfully this thread hasn't devolved yet but such stuff usually invites needless hostility. To me personally, the quality is far more important than the quantity.

My main gripe is still the fact that there is romance-gating at all. It is a very bad idea in general unless it's really, really needed to establish the character of a particular NPC (e.g. Dorian). The fact that Cassie, Solas, etc. etc. are gated to either hetero, or elf PCs does not add anything to their characters, so it's a needless, frustrating limitation of choice.

Romance unlockers are usually among the first mods I download.

Well, there are two good answers, thought of the second as I was typing. Lock her in a cell even he can't break into, make it a blood lock like the one that held Corypheus that would have stayed locked if it was the pseudo-neutral Inquisitor instead of the easily swayed by his buddies Hawke. Or chuck her through an eluvian and lock the door, and make her some other dimension's problem.
