I'm going to stand by the theory of psychic dittos in reference to all of this. They easily change their characteristics to suit the beholder, it even slightly works on Shepard if you're dealing with Aethyta because if you get drunk she ends up appearing younger and wearing lip gloss (Works on male and fem Shep). I have a feeling our protagonist is going to be immune to psionic powers in ME4 and we won't recognize Asari because to us they shall be amorphous blobs.

Only problem with the amorphous blob theory is that their armor is interchangeable with human women, and I have to wonder if the drawings etched in stone of ancient asari also have that same perception filter goodness.

I agree, Domiel, very much so in fact. That was the same reasoning I had towards desire demons and why I think a little switch at the start of the game would be great (as in: "Indicate which sex your character would be most interested in"). It really stands to reason that desire demons would appear in a form and shape that would be most alluring to their victim. A bit like the D&D spells in the vein of 'phantasmal killer'.

That's how I feel as well.  Personally, I'm fine with more options for straight men in the next game.  I would prefer things to be as equal as possible, but if straight men got an extra option in the next game I wouldn't care.  Maybe that could mean more than three lady party members to choose from.  I remember my own complaints about that one.

I'd be more fine with more gay options tbh.

If the extra option was gay, that'd be even better.

Straights shouldn't have all the fun and us staying forever with 2 options at best. -_-

That's what I mean. Counting doesn't help. BW should just spend the few extra bucks on ungating all potential LIs (i.e. by implementing the required flags and recording voiceovers (he/she)) instead of constantly having to worry about 'who has it better|worse'. (Except in rare cases like Dorian, see above.)

So, okay, Asari aren't women.  They still look like human women though, which is something a straight woman wouldn't be into.  That's like saying that a mono-gendered male race would be perfectly fine for a straight guy to romance because the race aren't really men.

Oh don't even get me started on him.  I'll save those rants for the ME forums.

In both cases, you could probably assume that they don't have regular 'sexual' reproduction. Now, taking into account the sheer win that is the bromance of male-Shepard and Garrus, they could very well do that in the next game and I'd be 100% okay with a romance with a mono-gendered male and having an offspring of some kind. Considering we are never actually shown the lower regions of an Asari within the confines of a game, how are we certain that they don't have just breasts before having to modify themselves with extra genitalia for race specific accommodation? They could be as flat as the angels from Dogma below the waist, until their partners' (male or female) 'needs' arise.

We just think the armor is interchangable, they're just holding them in the folds of their blob shape. Same goes with weapons, they could just shape appendages as they see fit. Its why I chose ditto who can actually shift perfectly into a give shape except for the eyes, its why Asari can't change their tentacle heads as the costume can't be perfect.

The comics have already stated that Asari do have regular sexual reproduction though.   It's right in the lore; they have all the female bits and pieces for traditional sex.  They are far from featureless down there.  The only way a player can assume as such is if they ignore the rest of the ME lore.  You're asking straight women to be attracted to and accept a romance that looks like another woman.

You may be the exception, but I'd love to see how folks in the ME forums would react to a mono-gendered male race being a fine romance option for a straight guy.  Oh they get that, and a woman that might die in the first game; a terminally ill patient, an unconventionally attractive non human (oh, better romance her then or else you're SOL)  and a cheater in the second game.

Besides, the bits below the waist don't matter.  They look like human women, have breasts like human women, and talk like human women.  I don't expect a straight woman to be into that, no matter what the alien was packing.  I also don't think that most straight men would be into a character as a LI that looked like a man, had pecs like a man and talked like a man either.   There are some straight guys on the forums that can't handle a LI having a short haircut, much less one that actually looked and sounded like a guy.

I have to question Krem's sexual preference with all of this because he does identify as a man but never explains whether he prefers men or women. He does talk like a man, and with the armor on he looks very much like a man, and even though Bull and Krem make bra jokes there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of breast room in his armor so he may have small enough bosoms to have pecs. A perfect description of what you said at the end; Looks, male upper body and talks like a man. I would find him very intriguing as a LI for a Male Inquisitor.

Tansgender doesn't equal transexual. Personally I'd like to see everybody available for everybody, and end of story. Except maybe Solas, who has good reason to be picky about the race he prefers.

He makes a comment about finding a woman attractive, and doesn't make one about a man, so I'm guessing he's straight.  I knew of a person that was in the middle of going M to F because they were literally a straight woman in a man's body.  I've also met one young man that was F to M that was a gay man in a woman's body.  Someone's gender identity isn't the same as their sexual identity.

Because Krem can be killed off, I doubt we'll see him again unfortunately.  Maevaris, on the other hand, I can see making an appearance.  She's a widow though, so I doubt she'll be a love interest.  Besides, I know BioWare is the most open minded AAA game company right now, but I think we're still a decade away or so from a trans romance.  Some of the comments surrounding Krem's very existence are bad enough right now.

Case in point: Leliana can be killed in the first game in the series and she makes a comeback, although she claims resurrection by the Maker (IE screams of many fans about her death even though they caused it). It depends on the whim of the designer on what is and isn't canon, and people complained about a large amount of things and they made a comeback. From what I've seen the Krem haters seem to be a minority, unless there's a giant web of old threads that I didn't wade through yet.

For those debating the balance of LI options in ME3, they're not...particularly balanced, in my eyes, but my usual adage in regards to that sort of this is: You win some, you lose some

Spoiler

I can see where people are coming from, describing Liara as an androgynous romance option (something the above picture doesn't take into account). But for all intents and purposes, her design, as it is in game, is something I would think would be more attractive to straight male gamers and lesbian gamers. If the androgynous route was something they'd really wanted to make an emphasis on, I'd think they could have done that (I'm picturing something similar to Ursula Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness). Alternatively, as was mentioned earlier, there might have been an option at the beginning of the game that allowed a player to set their preferences. I think that would have been a cool feature, particularly for any character (Companion or otherwise) who's appearances were an integral part of their culture/biology/whatever.

I personally would love to see a more balanced playing field for everyone. I enjoy playing a wide variety of characters. I do think, though, that with some games, you just win some, and you lose some. Brosheps had it pretty good in ME3, Female elves had it pretty good in DAI, as far as options. Maybe next game we'll see more gay male LI options.

I think it's good to share feedback :) Thank you OP for presenting it nicely. It's a topic that's worth discussing.

I would not mind an adrogynous-more male like race in the future.  :) it would be quite interesting. (but I'm someone who would absolutely love a female Turian as LI in the new ME, bonus if she is bisex, but I would be ok with her being lesbian. Yes, I have loved Neera that much)

I'm a straight male and always play straight male characters.

I don't mind so much having fewer romance options than others of different gender/identity.

I *am* bothered a bit by the fact that I'm not likely to be interested in either option my character has.

I prefer warrior-type strong female characters.  (I wanted to romance Aveline in DA II, but alas, no such option.)  I am intrigued by Cassandra, except I can't get past her religious enthusiasm.  I'm just not interested in Josephine at all, though I understand others might be.

Unfortunately for me, I have other problems with this game that prevent me from really experiencing the LI options.

True, gay male Shepard really had it worst during first two games ^^;

Didn't BW once say gay male Shep was against his characterisation & that he was straight in canon? would explain why they tried so hard to make people believe that F!Shep/Liara wasn't a lesbian relationship even tho it obviously was

It really was, why would a straight female Shepard be interested in dating a alien who looks & sounds exactly like a blue skinned human female just with head tentacles instead of hair?

Because a- she is NOT female and b- personality is arguably far more important than looks.

I haven't heard about it. I think Bioware has really gotten better when games go on, more inclusive and so on ^^

What about female Shep though wasn't she canon at all?

Would you have the same complaint if romances were tipped in favor of male characters? That has always been the case in the past. Why is it an issue if Bioware decides to favor female characters? The next ME game will probably favor male characters again, and no one will complain -- because that's standard ("normal").
