It makes me feel less guilty when I romance someone else lmao, 'cause at least I know my favorite characters won't be lonely-onlys pining after the PC.

Makes me feel really guilty when I romance the people involved. Like I'm destroying a relationship.

What sucks more is it is almost always with my favorite love interests.

Aww, don't feel guilty! I just treat it as a sort of alternate universe (which it basically is). Like, in a world where [PC] doesn't exist, these two characters might find some common ground and hook up. But in a world where [PC] does exist, fate molds things a little differently...

They aren't in a relationship until after you romance someone else

It's just like real life, if you're not dating that person chances are they're gonna find someone else

I love the NPC romances. I ended up liking Carver/Merrill and Dorian/Bull more than their respective romances.

edit; apparently I can't spell Merrill's name :P

Oh, I liked Bethany x Sebastian too! It's just, uh... Bethany has an unfortunate tendency to not be alive in my playthroughs. Consequence of playing so many mage Hawkes.

I love both Merrill and Carver and Bethany and Sebastian! :D

Adoribull is pretty adorable as well.

I somehow like shipping NPCs more than my own characters so I really like when games have some canon ships too to like.

Oh, what?! How could I miss that? And I thought I know DA2 quite well ;) When that happens? It cannot be during Act 1, or yes?

(hmm... last time - as I remember - Bethany was dead and Carver died in the Deep roads because of Best served cold quest ;) but he lived through act 1 ;))

I'd like more genuinely good people as companions rather than the dark/edgy/morally grey companions Bioware has been favoring lately.

I'd like to see this for romances at least. I've said before I'd like a KISA option for once.

It'd also be neat if we could choose body-type options, or at least see a Qunari male with a slim, lithe build. Can't stand such over-the-top bulk, myself; it's very off-putting. Their bodies in DA2 were at least realistically buff, IMO. Still, I think if the men have to be so bulky, it's really odd that the women are all skinny in comparison.

Couldn't agree more. It's really annoying that all males are really bulky (except elves) and all females are really thin. And because they're both like that, it makes the problem even worse because of the contrast. I would really, really like an option to change your body type in the next game, even if we had say, 3 builds to choose from. I know it might be hard to add in a game with cutscenes, but I think the effort would well be worth the cost.

Not only would it help dramatically in making a unique looking character (because it's really jarring to see a really unique face but the same body on everyone), it would also help tremendously for NPCs. Especially when you juxtapose 2 characters beside each other frequently, like 2 chantry sisters. It would help negate the immersion-break that is identical bodies for everyone in the room, and in my opinion, make the world feel more alive. It would also help a lot with self-inserts, which are quite popular. I bet the existing bodies don't work for 90% of the players.

And this is what I like :) I mean, this adds something to realism. Why should be only the "main protagonist" in some romantic relationship?

I agree with this. Even if I don't always like the pairings, it's not my place to say who should be with who, just like real life. To be honest though, I would have preferred it if Bull got together with Krem instead. I just like that pairing better, and they could still have included the forbidden tevinter/qunari romance aspect.

Exactly. The characters are programmed to become a couple unless the protagonist romances one of them. The protagonist romancing one stops the romance between the two, thus destroying the relationship.

Not true. They get together if you don't romance either person. A protagonist who romances nobody still has the NPCs become a couple.

Which mostly happens after you start trying to romance someone else or no one at all

They're not real.....  There's no reason for it to 'bring misery' to anyone.  Nothing's 'being destroyed'.  It's just another possible version of the story.  That's really the extent of it.  The same way that choosing one way to solve a quest offers different content than choosing to solve it another way.

More importantly, for all we know they'd have a really **** relationship that ends up shattering them emotionally for years. Maybe Josephine never gets over herself if she founds out Blackwall's little secret, etc.

I know they aren't real, but it still causes feelings. All good fiction does that. Old Yeller wasn't a real dog, but I still feel sad when he has to be put down. I also tend to put myself into games, books, shows, etc more than I should as a means of escape. So even though it isn't real it feels real.

Gotta say I'm completely opposite on that myself. I usually feel much worse if I know that a character will be forever alone if they aren't romances by the protagonist, even more so in games where just keeping it at a friendship without having to get with someone else or breaking their hearts first is near impossible.

That's the cutest one I can think [fondly] of.  ^_^ His crush is so adorable. I do wish we could have helped that one along or something, but it likely wouldn't have worked anyway, with Carver in the Wardens, in my canon especially, as I think he's happiest there. (Also, really didn't care for Fenris/Isabela--and I know it was just sexual--but that's just me.)

I just don't like when a character I like gets with a character I don't like. Dorian/Bull for example. It grosses me out and makes little sense. That's why I'd love to have a say in it, or have neat little spouse companions with happy families and such. This isn't some kind of selfish "if I can't have this character, no one can" kind of deal, before people begin shrieking at me. If I like both characters and see them as compatible, I don't mind at all. :)

Also, I hope I don't offend--although a differing opinion shouldn't offend in the first place--with my utter dislike for Bull. Please just keep in mind that while I like nothing about him, I completely respect others who do like him.

It's actually an authentic, psychological process. I remember reading science article about it - I'll put a link if I find it in my infinite bookmarks folder, but yeah, basically after reading/watching piece of fiction, people have tendency to "live in that world" for a while...

I'd imagine that happens more when someone has aspects of their own life they'd rather avoid, too.

Sometimes you just put yourself into a world because it is captivating or interesting.

Issues aint always required but for those of you that use it as an escape then so be it.

Yeah, I know. It's just that it can get a bit unhealthy if you put yourself into it because it's captivating and interesting, then also because you need to escape.

But isn't like that with anything? Shopping, browsing Internet, playing games (in general, not just for stories), eating, sports - anything can become unhealthy if people don't have moderation or treat their hobbies or favorite past-times as means to either escape the world entirely or ease their existential pains.

Hmm, yeah, I find the NPC romances and flirts do influence my choice of LI... if it seems like another companion fits that character better than my PC, I tend to avoid that LI and go for another one. Not because I'd feel bad, but just, for story reasons. I find Carver/Merrill cute, so I've never completed her romance. But if I don't feel like the NPC romance is a better pairing than with the PC, then I won't feel bad "stealing" them.  -_-

Well, if it's any consolation, the Dorian/Iron Bull pairing is super easy to avoid. Oddly, I have some playthroughs where Josephine never gets a bouquet of flowers on her desk, even though Blackwall is still there. I'm not sure how to get this stuff to vary.

I haven't seen her get flowers at all yet.  I'm not sure what I'm missing.  <shrug>

Yeah in my previous playthrough, I noticed a vase full of flowers on her desk, and the Inquisitor can actually comment on it. There's even some banter, at least for Sera there is, which involves biting peaches.

Hate hate hate that I still have the banter bug and can never get these companion/NPC romances to trigger for me. I really hope next time the extra romances aren't needing banter triggers alone to make the romance happen.
