I'm am very new to PC gaming, I'm a tried and true console gamer. I picked up Dragon Age for both Steam and Origins during the Humble Bundle and so I figured I'd ask the PC gamers which version they prefer or which one is better.

I am planning on trying to mod the games, the real only reason I purchased it for PC in the first place. So which program is better for modding the series?

The only difference it will make is were the game files are stored. If you use origin, they will be in origin games folder. Steam will have them in the steam apps folder.

Happy modding.

P.S. LInk will be your new home for modding DAO.

Mods will work on both versions. I would say use Origin. This way Steam won't get another set of stats from your PT's.

Next time you buy any game check the prices on other digital distribution sites. If the price on steam is not signifficancy cheaper go with any other distributor. If you can buy it for the same price on Steam and Origin, buy it from Origin.

Steam monopoly must be tamed if we don't want to see in the future more of their genius 'ideas' like the last one.

The more competition the better.

When you're looking for some game look for other available distributors. Go to this site and search for that game:

http://www.cheapshark.com/

The list of available digital distributors with the current prices should help you to find the best deal.

What was Steam's genius idea? Again, new to the PC gaming world.

EDIT: Oh, wait, you mean the whole modding controversy? Yeah, even I heard about that.

Eh, it's a long story. In short, they wanted to monetize mods made by players for various games (starting with Skyrim) on Steam.

Author of the mod would get only 25% of sales. That foolishness lasted only 2-3 days and got dropped. Vavle admitted how clueless they were on this one.

But there is much more to this so if you like to dig deeper just google something like "steam selling mods" and you will find tons of articles.

If you are modding then use Origin as the Origin file client has a simpler folder structure.

Plus the Origin version is DRM free so you don't need Origin running to play DA: Origins or DA2.

Errrm...  Is this a trick question?

Inquisition isn't available on Steam. In fact, no major EA game has been made available on Steam since Valve started requiring that all DLC for any game distributed through Steam had to be made available there, which EA was unwilling to do. (Something about that 30% cut and potentially underpricing the DLC compared to Origin...)

Plus, Inquisition requires an Origin account to activate after install.

For EA games, I would prefer using Origin.

I have DAO on Steam. It came with the Humble Bundle.

Comparing client to client, Origin is still sorely light years behind Steam in features. Origin can barely install games properly, and causes issues with games it's overlaying. Unfortunately, You won't find any modern EA games on Steam due to the DLC policy Steam has, that EA refuses to do.

When installing games, Origin frequently fails to complete the install. The latest case of this happening to me is DA:I, it took 4 attempts to install the game from Origin before the install would complete and actually let me play. 3 prior attempts would say the game was ready to play, but when I tried to play, the game went into install mode again and hung trying to complete the install. Did this to me for ME3 also at release, so it seems this issue is still hanging around.

The overlay can cause issues with game clients causing poor frame rates and/or crashes. This is another issue that has long haunted some users, going back to DA2.

As far as features go, just compare Origin to Steam. Some of the features that stand out to me are;

In Steam, take screen shots, record game video, friend list/messenger functionality is much more robust and reliable, Easier to set visible/away/offline visibility for friend list, can set games individually to auto update or not...

These are just some of the features off the top of my head that make me prefer Steam.

Thanks. Haven't experienced the problems you mention myself, and it wouldn't occur to me to use those features. I've always done vidcap and so forth through third-party stuff; I don't really see a good case for putting that functionality in the overlays unless you were just going to throw up your hands and run everything through Steam.

I suppose I'd like Steam better if I used the social-networking stuff, though.

I've never had an installation issues with Origin & I don't really use Steams social features, so for me they are basically the same.

Origin has a better refund policy & Steam has better sales.

I've got both installed and which one I use depends on the the game.

Steam also has the Ultimate version of DA:O and it regularly goes 75% off.

Currently US$7.49 on Steam, and US$29.99 on EA/Origin.

Go figure...

Funny thing is I have never had an install issue with Origin but I have had several install issues with Steam.  On multiple times it would either crash out during an install, reset for no reason, or after installing the game decide to re-install it.
