It would seem tacked-on or forced in, in my opinion.
I like the idea of passive squad-wide buffs based on specific class talents, leadership, officer training, etc.

Mass Effect Kinect!
Actually i think it is not a bad idea but i'll get lost in "space is srs bsns" people.
ME needs some passives, everyone around Shep(including him/her) simply pew-pew stuff or "use the force". A bard style class might be good, it worked in DA:Origins and most people loved Leliana.
Or maybe this "supportive" class can be buffer or/and combat medic instead of bard. Like SWG combat medic maybe. With heals, debuffs and poisons, while carrying a simple pistol or nothing, i don't know.
But as whole i agree that ME needs something "supportive" like this.

No.
1) Don't take ideas from other games (DA:I) and implement them in ME.
2) Except for a fun-cameo DLC like Citadel, it'd be ridiculous and childish.
Childish? IMO a "biotic singer" doesn't seem childish to me. Maybe it's because it's unnatural to think of an idol that could be on the battlefield. But I mean, *Points at "Zither!"* Ridiculous? Hella yeah it's ridiculous, but not childish. Maybe this "ridiculous" factor could actually be quite good (again, IMO).

I'm no fan of high fantasy, and I certainly wouldn't buy a WoW-erized Mass Effect.
They added the Zither as a joke (first literally, in fact), and the Citadel DLC as a relatively small comic relief. That's OK, but let's leave it at that.

A tech/etc pulse buff/debuff class is very possible. Won't be in the same context or usage as Zither, but it won't have to be, since it'll be a shooter game.

A bard playing songs and swinging some sort of a "proper" musical instrument in a battle is definitely NOT what i am suggesting.
I am suggesting a character that simply can wreck some things just with her voice, big time.
Ask yourself: what does death sound like? Life? Despair, hope? What could be a sound able to break a rock? Now imagine a character finding the corresponding tune, basically shouting/whispering/singing words "Die! Break! Live! Despair" in a strange, powerful language augmented by biotics or touching objects and creating a fatal resonance, shattering them to pieces, and in such way causing massive havoc on the battlefield.
Similar could also work to bring squad members back to their senses after disruptive attacks, stabilizing squad members in critical conditions or disrupting enemy biotics.
Human bodies oscillate in a specific frequency, btw, so it would be pretty interesting to give every squad character their own tune(or name in the alternative ancient language) they would be adressed in by the singer during combat situations.
For visuals you maybe could go with someting like a breath mask connected to a device covering an entire arm, meant to give a better amplification and control over the direction of the sound and a cool pistol in the other hand. During a story course mask and the arm device might become unnecessary with in-combat voice and words changing, too.
___________________________________________________________
Now there are also at least two other main points to what i suggested in the opening post of this thread:
- character being an actual singer
- character experiencing a significant transformation during the course of the story.
Why a singer?
Because we humans are trained to recognize patterns and music is a pattern of tunes, thus liking music is natural to us. A musically gifted character could become an anchor for the inter-crew story, someone around whom the crew would congregate naturally and exchange stories, cultural specifics etc Maybe even singing some alien songs, like Krogan drinking song or something of that kind - in general definitely a unique opportunity to present humans and aliens alike from a different angle in a completely understandable and natural way, without being forced to talk about mission parameters and a troubled childhood/daddy issues all the time.
Why a story about ancient knowledge etc?
Because in my opinion it would be great to have a character providing different and believable points of view to what is happening around the main protagonist and on his deeds. Javik was great because he could comment about diffent complicated topics like for example troublesome organic-synthetic relationships from experience and his knowledge. Protagonists' mentor in KOTOR2 stuck in my memory because of the very interesting "Good deeds can do a lot of harm" stance based on life-time long experience and a different world view.
The other angle is about how a relationship between two people might evolve when one of them experience a significant psychological/morphological change.

Yeah, no offense, but this is why I'm glad we fans don't get to make these types of choices. Mass Effect already ventures too far from realism.

Despair" in a strange, powerful language augmented by biotics or touching objects and creating a fatal resonance, shattering them to pieces, and in such way causing massive havoc on the battlefield.
The issue is that it's just too out of left field. It fits in certain environments, something like Dune, as was brought up earlier, or some 80s movie like Highlander or whatever, but in Mass Effect? It's too abnormal to throw on a squadmember. The absolute only way I could see it working is if it was one of the villain's special powers, granted to him/her/it, maybe by a mysterious, ancient object or something. But for a squadmember, it's just a tad bit ridiculous that someone's singing should be as effective as biotics, tech powers, or guns. Because it would have to be to make the character viable from a gameplay perspective.
Imagine, for instance, going up against enemies in combat or space suits. Would the song still be able to affect them the same way? What about synthetic enemies like geth (or the Andromeda equivalent, or just security mechs) - would this person have special metal-bending songs too? Don't you honestly think this all sounds just a bit too weird?
It's good to think outside the box, but you have to keep in mind that bringing in something very different, even small things like a single character's abilities, effectively alters the universe. Mass Effect has guns and space magic and that's the universe I like being in. Believable to an extent and still taking itself serious. Biotically enhanced combat singing would, in my opinion, be a far cry from the universe I know and love. It's the same reason I'm against many of the new abilities from ME3MP being adapted to the 'real' game - things like ninja swords and the teleporting skills of the N7 Fury and Shadow (I think?) are just stretching the boundaries a little too much.
If they went ahead and did something like this, you'd just never know where they'd go next. An evil henchman that throws space-hats at you with deadly efficiency?
the franchise would slide into the 'anything-goes' realm and while it might keep everything fresh and exciting, it also requires you to take it increasingly less serious, because the rules are constantly bent or outright ignored.
