Should our new ship be like the Normandy?

As iconic as the Normandy SR1 and SR2 were, I am hoping we get a very different ship. Enough space for the party members and a handful of non-party members. I would also like a smaller crew limiting to a pilot, medical officer, navigator, scientist, 3-4 engineers and maybe a chef who cracks jokes like eggs. Mainly a crew who can be interacted with as opposed to random npcs who do nothing. I wouldn't mind having a bigger ship, I just wouldn't want a copy and paste of the Normandy.

I have limited ideas on room designs from being simply a room to modify your weapons and armour to a research lab.

No thanks.
Hoping for a smaller ship, something like the Ebon Hawk.

I was going to mention the Ebon Hawk but changed it.

No, a new ship for a new trilogy regardless of who comes back.

Being iconic is not just a matter of the ship's design. The Serenity is a junky looking cargo ship, but it's arguably one of the more iconic starships in modern scifi, mostly because of the atmosphere the characters in it create. The Millenium Falcon is a "piece of junk", but it's one of the most beloved spaceships in cinematic history. Whatever we get, I just want it to be a ship that can look lived in, that we can add little touches to the interior here and there.

We already have threads about the new ship. Let's not clog up this forum with even more redundant threads.

The new ship, whether it's called the "Tempest" or something else will more than likely be a Normandy clone. I don't mean this in terms of its visual representation (although early alpha footage seemed to suggest that), but what it's meant to accomplish and likely its size. The Normandy was an integral part of the Shepard trilogy due to its speed and stealth capacity. Such a feat isn't possible with a dreadnaught or a capital ship.

Especially since the new protagonist is "somehow related to N7" and appears to be a soldier, not to mention he doesn't have the reputation or renown that Shepard has, I would doubt he/she would have a large ship. I actually wouldn't be surprised if the new ship is actually smaller. More than likely, BioWare Montreal will try to strike a level of familiarity while also expanding on that Normandy experience.

I'd love to see something totally different than the Normandy. Having said that, it should definitely be in the frigate class or something smaller. Anything larger and the ship wouldn't make too much sense for the role the protagonist would be in.

Nope

I'd prefer something big and bulky like a dreadnoght which would make the ship its own hub area with docking bays for fighters and regular Civilians on board for setting colonies, if that will be a feature anywy

I think the problem with a big ship is that it starts to make it tougher to juggle a few things. For one, the Star Trek logic of having the commander of the ship also be part of a strike team becomes troublesome when the crew doubles or triples in size, and if the protagonist is not the commander of the ship, that basically means that you do not get to dictate where the ship goes, and you do not have access to the galaxy map, meaning the game has no galaxy map, essentially making it a mobile hub and not "your" ship at all.

Personally I don't think it would be the best idea to have the PC's ship also serve as some sort of colony vessel, but rather a smaller ship that scouts ahead for the civilian populations.

I like for it to a piece of flying junk. As the game moves forward, upgrades are purchased or automatically added at certtain points in the game that make the ship look better and perform better

It's more likely to be a half finished castle, with a bedroom you never use, and your crew just standing to attention in various locations.  :D

I'm for something bigger with more rooms, more levels, more things to do. And bigger guns.

I want a beat up old repurposed freighter! And after saying that I just remembered The Pillar of Autum was one such ship, now I wanna read The Fall of Reach again. What a great book, also the reason I hate Halo Reach.

I really want the ship to be huge to accommodate enough people to colonize dozens of worlds, and for our PC to be in command of the ship and still charge into combat I want him/her to be in command simply because the captain and a series of people who would have otherwise succeeded him all die somehow. The ship is that Citadel-esque structure we saw art of and the PC was just a public face for the project, thrust into a position of relative authority by politicians because he/she did something heroic that got media attention. Green as grass but put in charge of a team of elite military personnel that don't respect him/her and now leading the entire mission because his/her BS title is next in line after half a dozen more qualified people all died.

I think a small but fast and stealthy ship makes too much sense for a guy with only 2 squadamtes saving the galaxy like twice a week.

The Tempest will be an unofficial Normandy 3 and the Ark ship will be the new mobile home Citadel.

It would be so much more efficient if the scout ship and colony ship weren't one and the same, no?

But the colony ship would have to serve as the base of the scout ship, and if our PC is only in charge of the scout ship/away team then there isn't much autonomy.

I disagree. Being in command of the "scout" carries the same dynamic as the Normandy crew has to the Citadel, Cerberus or to the Alliance leadership. There will probably be a group of characters that serve as the actual leadership of a colony or fleet that serve as the quest givers, while you go out and do what you must to accomplish the mission.

I like this idea best, but would it really be wise for whoever set up the mission of expansion in the new galaxy to give them a piece of junk, especially with all the unknown aliens and technology that are likely to be encountered? Whatever solution, feeling like your ship is growing with your crew and your experiences will certainly help make it feel like your ship.

Unless we start the game out with a fake-out crew who have this really sleak and high-tech ship that gets blown up in the first 10 minutes, marking the first diplomatic incident between Andromeda and the Milky Way. Then start the game proper with a "X Years Later" story jump where you and your crew are given a ship courtesy of the new races... and it's a piece of crap. Maybe have Mark Meer voice the fake protagonist, fully armored and wearing a helmet, just to F with people. The fan outcry would be as delicious as Dante in the DmC reboot making fun of classic Dante's hair.

Strongly disagree. Shepard is the captain of what is largely an autonomous ship. The game has structure, but it largely presents it's structure as player choice. Shepard never really had to answer to anyone once the games got rolling. He was always the one telling everyone else what they need to be doing except in a few situations.

It may look like junk, but it doesn't have to run like junk.

As the game moves forward, materials can be gathered to use to improve the looks and find upgrades or purchase upgrades that can improve the ship's armor, shields and weapon systems like in ME2. Maybe even upgrade the thrusters, and anything else that can improve the performance of the ship. Once everything is upgraded the ship could be better than the SR2.

Mainly the ship will need the stealth system of the Normandy to get around without have to have full on fight fires everywhere.

but seeing as there only been three type of ships with that technology; SR1/2, salarian dreadnought, and i think a quarian ship plus us most likely have a alliance then a "SR3" is the most likely option.

Still I personally would love a joint-council made ship, it could have a really nice look to it or be so very ugly but either way i want it.

I like the Idea that your just on a scout ship, the Ark ship is the state of the art cutting edge piece of tech, while the scout ships this redundant piece of salvaged crap because the intended scout ship got destroyed/never arrived.
