So.. I wonder where we (gamers/nerds) stand as far as AI goes. That is; how much more do we need, vs how much have we already acquired?

There is Siri, Cortana, Cleverbot, Cyc, etc. We have it in our lives now in some capacity.

Any thoughts on the near future of A.I.?

Also, anyone else seen this film?

I think we need to figure out how to reliably raise organic intelligence.

There is simulated intelligence, those are the computers you described, Siri and cleverbot. They reply from a databank. Its less about intelligence and more about programming a computer to reply to certain keywords.

If youve played a text game like the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy webgame for example, you know what i mean.

TRUE AI would be a sentience on its own like us, except manifested through a machine. At that point Id say they were a distinct lifeform. Instead of an organic brain they would have a computer one.

I truly wish Kubrick could've lived to direct A.I.

I don't think we're anywhere near true AI. So, nothing to think or worry about...yet.

From what I see, artificial life is already irreproducible by human means, intelligent artificial even more.

Depends, with the programmers spend more time trying to avoid them wanting to "Kill All Humans", or more time modelling their sexy robot bodies to resemble Tricia Helfer or Summer Glau? Because if it's the latter, I'm pretty sure a lot of people will be wearing Team Quisling t-shirts on the day that comes to be known as "The Great Adjustment"...

After seeing numerous vague, short articles in recent months about supposedly smart people (like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, etc) warning about the dangers of AI, I started to actually look into where we stand.  I am currently reading:

41-x4P2ChOL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-stic

and it is a good, somewhat informative read.

Basically, most of the "experts" think we are anywhere from 10-50 years away from AGI, or artificial general intelligence - an AI as smart as your average human.  The problem then arises that since most think the only way we get to AGI is via "black box" recursive self-improving programming, we might go from AGI to ASI - artificial super intelligence - in months, weeks, or in a worst case scenario, hours without even realizing it.  That is scary when you consider that an ASI could very easily  be one thousand times smarter than the smartest human, and that gulf in capability is several hundred times greater than the gulf between humans and, say, a cat.

As long as the AI is confined within a computer what can it do? Production of raw materials and manufacturing them into higher form is in the human hands.

I think the fear is that if something is many orders of magnitude smarter than a human, it won't have much of a problem talking a human into plugging it into the internet, and then there is no containing it.

A true ASI will be so smart that the things it conceives and accomplishes will seem like pure magic to us.  Think along the lines of taking someone from the middle ages and dropping them into 2015, only more.......if you get my drift.

Edit to add:

From what I have read, what most people don't attribute to potential future AGI's or ASI's is that they will use deception to trick humans into doing what they want, just like any clever human would consider doing.  And the gap in intellectual capabilities from an ASI to us could easily be 100 times greater than it is from us to an earthworm.....yikes.

Proper AI should never happen. I don't care how tempting an AI's capabilities would be in all kinds of fields, the conclusions that are always made about where AI will take us are the only ones can can be made. Why? Because they're the logical conclusions, and an AI would be the height of logic.

I think we need to figure out how to reliably raise organic intelligence.

I'm with this. Focus on improving humanity and striving towards a higher purpose as Julius Evola puts it. AI would just be creating a new kind of slave to serve the purpose that slaves always have, to make their masters more comfortable.

Sure but earthworms do not have higher cognitive processes, we do. So outsmarting humanity might still be a bit demanding. And even it would and had access to internet there is still the matter of producing things it wants. The world is still too primitive for AI to rule it.

Personally I think a AI could help humanity to ascend. With this pace we are just killing ourselves and the planet.

not a fan of it frankly. There's a point where technology needs to stay grounded. The thought of a robot that can think for itself is frankly terrifying to me in some senses.
