My own brutally honest thought on elves in the whole Dragon Age franchise.

 

In my whole experience in mythology, fairy tales and the such. Elves are supposed to be beautiful, charismatic and . . . well pretty much a dream come true in terms of physical features however DAO provided a very. . . . . . unsatisfying look on elves. Very slim. .and . . fugly.

 

The only elf that i thought was "cute" not beautiful was Sera and that was in DAI.

some look malnourished, remember Merill? in DAI? . . when you romance her she looks so thin. . .

Why can't even they make the male look a bit like this?

this is not Tolkien also, it is alright for Bioware to have their own twist to the Elf concept. DA's Elves are not perfect nor are they meant to be.

Lol i didn't mean to have them beautify it that much but they make elves so thin and poor looking that it makes them unsightly most of the times.

I like how BW took the opposite approach to the elven mythos and instead of them being immortal all-knowing models they are poor oppressed people who lost all that "traditional elven" glory. It is refreshing and it would be interesting to see how or if the elves in modern day Thedas will (try to) achieve that level. 

 

I think the elves look pretty good especially in DAO. DAII elves look horrible and it is good that they changed them in DAI. I think they should be a bit taller though.

They are a nomadic hunter gatherer society (The dalish) and poor (the Alienage) so yes, they would look a bit poor and thin.

I correct myself. . I find Shianni in the vanilla textures of DAO "not pretty" but she is infact attractive as a being. . And let me quote " I did say that Sera was cuter in DAI because of graphic improvements but I do find Shianni more "attractive" than her." So do not presume tastes are awful due to subjective reading.

These elves are not supposed to be the obscenely beautiful, immortal elite of post-Tolkien popular mythology. They were created specifically to subvert/deconstruct the traditional Tolkien-esque ideal, admitted by BioWare itself. 

 

In fact, all the Dragon Age universe is meant to subvert and deconstruct standard Tolkien fantasy races, tropes, and ideals. BioWare created a new fantasy universe with different rules where elves not being perfectly beautiful, charismatic, or "a dream come true in terms of physical features" makes sense, so I'm okay with that.

 

THAT SAID, I LOATH DA2's ELF REDESIGN. Partly because it's a retcon (I hate retcons), partly because I also find them hideous, but mostly because a) we're still told that humans find elves attractive despite them looking like diseased, malnourished goat people (I can understand them finding slim, lithe, angular people pretty, but not bipedal goats), and b ) it completely undermines the message of the first game. The first game shows how elves are oppressed and treated like subhuman animals for something as petty as a lithe build and pointed ears--much like how real humans oppress and dehumanize each other over petty differences like pigment color and slightly different bone structures. DA2 rolls around and makes elves really look like inhuman animals, which kind of rationalizes humans' racism and oppression against them. "Oh yeah, I can see why they'd be treated like beasts of burden since they look like beasts of burden" should not be the player's reaction.

Amen to that.  I prefer DAO elves to DA2 as well, though in my case it didn't even enter my consciousness that it was a retcon (probably because it WAS so jarring to begin with).  They went from being the slim, lithe, slightly shorter people with slightly pointed ears of Origins to Na'vi with EXAGGERATED pointy ears and slight (but noticeable) sexual dimorphism.  I can't even stomach using tmp's mod on Origins elves - it just looks too jarring.

 

Also, "goat people" is possibly the best description of DA2 elves I've seen.

I found Sera not cute but crazy... and she's not cute of the appearance. 

 

God how much I hope Inquisition can bring up some hot girls rather than russian cassandra, indian montyliyet, and bold black viviane... ah, and that crazy sera....

I think Shianni is very pretty. As was Velanna. And DA2 Merrill is gorgeous.

I actually prefer Sera to Shianni, because I'm clearly some deranged deviant, but the character models in Origins are kind of generic to me in the first place. A lot of them look really similar to one another.

If you find THIS "fugly" but THIS "cute," you and most of the world clearly have different standards of beauty.

Shianni is my sister-in-arms and one of my favorite NPCs in that game and if she were real I would love her like a cousin and you are being utterly ridiculous.

Well, I think elves are supposed to be a diminished race by the Dragon Age.  Maybe they were taller and/or more beautiful in ancient times?

Well, the ancient elves are a bit more imposing than our run-of-the-mill variety.

No. I think she looks fine. I think that saying that she looks ama~zing while Sera supposedly looks plain/fugly is ridiculous.

Count me in on the 'I prefer the DAO elves' group - take how Merril and Zevran looked in DA:O and how they made them look in DAII. I don't usually complain about redesigns (Isabella looks sexy in DAII, I cannot lie - see what I did there? ), but the elves... no, just no.

Adding to what Beregond5 said, I feel like part of the reason I can stand Fenris with the vanilla DA2 elf appearance is because unlike Zev, Merrill and most of the Dalish, he wasn't in DAO.  So I didn't have as much of an expectation in terms of how he should look in DA2.

I don't think they really intended to make them ugly in DA2? They were going for a more doll like or anime influenced look it seems, but couldn't quite pull it off, and it didn't mesh with the rest of the art style...the result is a bit awkward/odd looking. Then DAI shifted art style once again in favor of a more realistic/gritty look in general with all of the human companions now sporting scars and imperfections, so beautiful/perfect looking elves would look very out of place.

The Elves were beautiful and proportunate in DAO, DA2 was appalling and DAI makes them look malnourished. Pigeon chested weedy male elves are fugly in my opinion. But I do like the Devs  taking an alternate route with the lore. There seems (to me) to be an undercurrent of malice in the ancient elves.. i.e. slavery.
