Hello.

Some of you will remember me - some of you may not.

Regardless, the links that are pointing towards whatever in the stickies are currently all broken when it comes to The Vault.

Coming back to the forums, I am really, really bewildered by this.  Where is a new player supposed to go to get these "improvements", etc?

How is it possible that the Community has let things come to this?!

For example, I have a new computer.  I have DLed and installed GoG NWN Diamond.  I want to update it (for the server listings, for the visual improvements, AI, whatever).  I look at the stickies, and click on the links.

I get dead IGN websites.

How is this helping?  How is it remotely possible that things have come to this?

I know this sounds somewhat critical, and it is, really.

I am appalled.

Evidently one Vault closed, and another was opened for mods. Here is a link posted in another thread that may be of help:

Hello.

Coming back to the forums, I am really, really bewildered by this.  Where is a new player supposed to go to get these "improvements", etc?

If you point people to the posts with broken links in them and the authors of those posts are still around they can change those links to point to the new vault instead of the old one. If they aren't around any more, I think there's no way for someone else to edit their posts.

Whatever happened to the old vault is not the community's fault. The community (and especially Rolo) did invest  a lot of work to get a new vault running and preserve all the content of the old vault.

So far the only thing that may be completely lost are the generika comics (except for a few of the first ones).

It is not a question of the Community "fixing" the problem here - it is one of the stickies providing links that are dead.

I have the utmost respect for Rolo & Co - why would I not have such?

We have a problem here.  It is a horde of stickies, that lead nowhere.  It needs to be addressed.

This is the reason for my post.

Where are the mods?  We need to fix things.

Well, that's the problem, in a nutshell. You need someone with moderator permissions (or the original authors) to fix the links. The rest of us don't have that capability, so we just do our best to publicise the new site in regular posts.

Ok, so let me see if I got this right...

There are no Mods anymore?  In other words, it is not possible to "fix" the stickies?

Looks like it.  Shia Luck is not listed as a moderator anymore, and I have been seeing staff posts with impersonal names like BioWareMod03.

Is it still possible to post in the stickies? If so, we can at least limit the damage by reposting with new links.

A second approach would be to seek out a moderator to just sticky a thread that we create containing all the previous links updated.  In General Discussion sub-forum the only stickied thread that I am noticing that requires significant link updates is the add-ons thread.

I don't know what the status of forum moderation is. I recall that a thread was recently locked by a mod, so that's some evidence that they are around. But, it may be that they aren't perusing the NWN forums as NWN fans, as in the old days. They may only be responding to reported posts. I don't see a way to be sure. (It may also be possible to get the attention of a moderator in one of the really active forums for BW's newer games and ask for some help here.)

That said, it isn't 100% clear what people want a mod to do in this case. I would guess that there is very little chance that a mod would take it upon himself to fix/update those existing sticky posts. If someone has updated versions ready to go, then posting them then trying to get a mod's attention seems reasonable.

IMO, the best approach would be to try and get ahold of jmlzemaggo and others and see if they would be willing to update the links in their posts. A better approach (by which I mean one more likely to produce a useful result) would be for someone to copy the posts and update the links themselves. Ideally, a combination of the two would involve generating a list of updated links for the stickied posts and contacting the original posters with an offer for them to update their posts with the lists. This has the advantage of keeping attribution with the original poster and using the already-stickied (and search-engine indexed) threads. If those posters don't respond, then copy those posts and update the links and repost, along with a plea to any mods to sticky the new post and unsticky the outdated one.

I may be able to write a quick script to help automate the process. I'll post if I get something to work.

This isn't as tidy as I would like it, but I am running a little low on time.

For the "Add-ons & Tips from the NWN Community" thread, I think the following should give the item #, the link text and then the old link and the new link, when I could find them. I did not get all of the links to, for example, contributor's pages and links that were repeated later in the post. NOTE: If I could not find a link in the new vault that was equivalent to the old one (this happened a few times), I left the old link in, so that it would be easy to find later.

[EDIT]

See the posts below. The first is the BBCode for JML's post and the second is what that BBCode would look like normally, with some emoticons removed to allow me to post it.

Hmm. Maybe this is better? It's the BB code for the original post with the old links replaced with the new links I found. I *think* this is ready to paste into the original thread, if someone can find JML or a mod to change it. Or if someone wants to repost in a new thread.

BTW, I would have posted this to display in normal mode (instead of in BBCode mode), but the boards have apparently since reduced the number of emoticons a post can have (which is just the same as the ones in the original) and the forums won't let me post that way. Yeesh!

 [b]Special notes:[/b]

*1) I personally have never seen a major issue with Tony K's AI anywhere in NWN. Only... some beloved "perfectionist" type of community modules authors created their very personnal AI and playing those with Tony K? one might not be the proper and most respectful way to go. About a second ?No Tony K? AI ?verride folder, eventually by using that *24,[url=http://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/other/nwnlauncher] NWNLauncher[/url]? So, I'd recommend installing Tony K? AI at the very end of that list. And also reading the "Read me" coming with any single module before playing it...
7 & 8) About hands only: Use [url=http://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/model/kurairyus-hands]Kurairyu's hands[/url], by kurairyu, for the gloves only, but [url=http://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/model/xaltars-head-and-underwear-packs]Xaltar's Head and Underwear packs[/url], by Xaltar, for the bare hands (Models 00 & 01). Don't overwrite 7 by 8 when asked.
*10) Use the NonShawdowVersion only! N?5 is my fav girl one. Eyes and lips colors can be change, in game, by using my tip *3, [url=http://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/hakpak/original-hakpak/customize-character-override-hak-ccoh]Customize Character[/url], by Kamiryn: [Modify body > change color > tatoo 1 & 2]. A must have for those who like playing (with) girls. And enjoy seeing maybe new NPCs as well... (I suggest installing [url=http://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/hakpak/original-hakpak/salts-human-female-head-pack]Salt's human female heads[/url] last, overwriting anything not as nice.)
*12) [url=http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/nwshader/index.php?title=Main_Page]NWShader wiki[/url]
*22) PGC3 v4.4 Beta is the one I? using, especially to perform *32, [url=http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=680391&forum=66]Shia? trick[/url] in game.
*28) The best way for me (Mac player = No toolset) to ?dd?some keen senses to your human PC for instance, but not only... Everything... (but don't touch the skills, buggy!).
Also, check on this [url=http://www.qnwn.net/home/]Project Q Site[/url]
Community modules & CEP: My personal trick: I simply installed all the CEPs versions I could find [url=http://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/hakpak/combined/cep-23-cep-24]here[/url], from the earliest one to the latest, in that very order, and was able since to play any official or community module I came across without any problem or conflict... so far.
*44) One of my fav. Those 3 pure jewels might not work in some modules. Read the "Project Details" by Calgacus. Or the [url=http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/199/index/5937142/1]original thread[/url]... where Calgacus finally answered his own call himself!

And don? worry: Mods don? bite! I mean, rarely...

Special notes:

*1) I personally have never seen a major issue with Tony K's AI anywhere in NWN. Only... some beloved "perfectionist" type of community modules authors created their very personnal AI and playing those with Tony K's one might not be the proper and most respectful way to go. About a second « No Tony K’s AI » override folder, eventually by using that *24, NWNLauncher? So, I'd recommend installing Tony K's AI at the very end of that list. And also reading the "Read me" coming with any single module before playing it...
7 & 8) About hands only: Use Kurairyu's hands, by kurairyu, for the gloves only, but Xaltar's Head and Underwear packs, by Xaltar, for the bare hands (Models 00 & 01). Don't overwrite 7 by 8 when asked.
*10) Use the NonShawdowVersion only! N°35 is my fav girl one. Eyes and lips colors can be change, in game, by using my tip *3, Customize Character, by Kamiryn: [Modify body > change color > tatoo 1 & 2]. A must have for those who like playing (with) girls. And enjoy seeing maybe new NPCs as well... (I suggest installing Salt's human female heads last, overwriting anything not as nice.)
*12) NWShader wiki
*22) PGC3 v4.4 Beta is the one I'm using, especially to perform *32, Shia's trick in game.
*28) The best way for me (Mac player = No toolset) to "add" some keen senses to your human PC for instance, but not only... Everything... (but don't touch the skills, buggy!).
Also, check on this Project Q Site
Community modules & CEP: My personal trick: I simply installed all the CEPs versions I could find here, from the earliest one to the latest, in that very order, and was able since to play any official or community module I came across without any problem or conflict... so far.
*44) One of my fav. Those 3 pure jewels might not work in some modules. Read the "Project Details" by Calgacus. Or the original thread... where Calgacus finally answered his own call himself!

And don't worry: Mods don't bite! I mean, rarely...

Great work! Now all we need is either the original sticky to be updated or a new one done!

Great to hear from you, MrZork.
I'm amazed my new comp knew my username and my password to allow me to answer you here. NWN is far away in my memory, but not in my heart. I totally forgot how to manage all of this thread thingy, so feel free to do as you know will be best as it would take too much from me to go back there.

Now, if you give me the link of my own original thread, awkward isn'it, not even knowing it anymore, I might take a look at it, and try something.
Or should I make a new one, in some new forum?

About a moderator?

'love you all.

Jmlzemaggo!! A thrill to hear from you!

Here is a link to your original "Add-ons & Tips from the NWN Community" thread. IMO, the best option is for you to edit that original post. That way, it will be up to date and we can avoid asking a moderator to swap the sticky-ness of it and a new thread, Modifying it should be as easy as using the Quote feature on my post above and then copying just the "Add-ons & Tips" material. Then open your original post and paste that over what's there.

BTW, did you ever get NWN to run on your Mac again?

[EDIT]
Aargh!. I remember now that the Quote feature no longer copies quotes within quotes. For convenience, I will post the relevant bit below, unquoted, so that you can quote this post and copy it. The stuff below the horizontal rule is the material from your "Add-ons & Tips" post, with the updated links.

Great work. May i suggest a few more recent additions? The community patch is still listed as version 1.70 while 1.71 is the most recent.

And under beautification i feel that Zwerkules' facelift haks should be listed.

Regarding tony k: i switched my whole override folder to separate patch haks. Makes activating and deactiviating of individual features much easier, though maybe some installers/launchers can fill amsimilar role. Anyway, regarding tonyk changes themselves: many things like monsters not using feats or abilites and familiars having missing stuff have been adressed by the cpp 1.71. So i personally feel, the only thing tonyk has to offer nowadays that make it really stand out is the free roaming sneaking enemy feature. And that's the one that can break some modules... may be worth adding as a footnote somewhere

As always, I couldn't resist the NWN call.
Job's done, MrZork.
I don't know how I made it, but I mixed some of your stuff and I believe it came out pretty well.
Luck was on our side, as always. Good job.
If things get more complicated in the future, just take the thread under your wing and your merry name and carry on with it, for the sake of gaming.
It's all yours. It always was.
But if you need me, I shall be around, at some point

Be very well, all of you.

You should thank yourself.
