When you right click on the map a blue 4 point star/crosshairs shows up.  what is this?

Just a marker to aid navigation.

A fairly substantial blue pillar appears in the game world at that spot, and I believe it also adds a mini-map indicator. You can right-click the spot again to dismiss the marker; otherwise, it will automatically dissipate once you reach the pillar.
