>Thought she was open-minded
Charizard, you're going back in the Poke Ball for that one, homie.
There was a joke response on both ends of the spectrum for that though, no? OP's stance on that from what I saw was closer to indifference and thinking it could be interesting.

What is it about the Shin Megami series that makes it worth checking out (Persona is a subseries of it right?)? What can I expect from the game? What exactly makes it a must play and how is it any different to your stock standard JRPG?
It's kind of heavy on moral ambiguity within its narratives. I think that's its draw for a lot of people.Everything is framed by the idea of Law, Chaos, and Neutrality instead of Good vs. Evil, because the actions of certain characters on certain sides you may not particularly perceive as good or evil. I wouldn't attribute typical weaboo teenage angst to the franchise. Or its Persona spinoff where they really go into the typical teenage lifestyle, with its psychological focus. Chris92 would school you better on why people enjoy the Persona set of games.

You could be right. I know most people responded by making fun of it and Skadi could've been joking but her replies to people in the thread throws doubt into that train of thought for me.

Fair enough, I'll indulge since you asked. To be honest I can't quite figure out what makes these games worth checking out, everything I have seen of the games seems to be style over substance that looks like it was made to appeal to the teenage/tween market, perhaps that is an unfair appraisal but I just have not seen anything about the game that gives me the impression that it is worth playing.
What is it about the Shin Megami series that makes it worth checking out (Persona is a subseries of it right?)? What can I expect from the game? What exactly makes it a must play and how is it any different to your stock standard JRPG?
The mainline Shin Megami Tensei is heralded for its ability to tell heavily complex stories, discussing philosophy and morality, and it does this carefully without the reliance on cinematics or heavy amounts of dialogue (like the Dark Souls games, but more) -- It's dungeon crawler heavy, and its narrative are usually always dark (see Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga).
Persona is a bit different, it takes the aspects of telling engaging stories from MegaTen, and changes the setting to a modern high school in Japan, which is not common by JRPG standards; Especially if one considers how authentic these said settings feel in Persona, how closely based they are to that of an actual high schools in Japan. Unlike most JRPGs, where you play as a so-called 18 year old-boy genius who downloaded the "onlyonewhocanstopethem.exe" from a ghost, the setting, characters, in Persona, react and emote in such a way that they feel real.
Persona doesn't place you straight into an objective, where you then spend 100 hours traversing the world, trying to beat the bad guys, it sets you in a high school, while simultaneously also having you fight against Shadows (monsters born from the regressed desires of man) inside an alternate reality, by using your Personas (the opposite of shadows, read the writings of Carl Jung for detailed explanations for that or play the game). These Personas can range tons of different apparitions that are all based on legends, myths or fairytale beings, which also relates to Jung. It shuffles between attending high school, bonding with people you meet, while fighting shadows on other days -- All of that might sound tedious were someone try to convey it in words to someone else, but it really isn't. The social link system, which ties the "fusion of your Personas" to that of the bonds you make with either friends or acquaintances is key. You get to explore the depths and complexities of the people you meet, watch them grow as you too grow closer to them, while your Personas get stronger as well -- It's poignancy in the game's favor, thematic-wise and everything.
MegaTen and its spin-offs essentially pay homage to that of old school JRPGs. Keeping the things that people miss from the old days, while also leaving most of the annoying things behind which people didn't miss.
Ultimately, this means that MegaTen (and Persona most of all) are a niché franchise, that appeals to a niché fanbase, avoiding the senseless catering to the mainstream crowd but that doesn't mean it isn't accessible. Persona is more accessible than that of the main Shin Megami Tensei series.
It would be fair to say that Persona is a character heavy game, and anyone who likes BioWare's games would really like Persona as well -- Essentially something I've always been saying since I started playing them a few years ago. If there is anything more you want to know, then I'll indulge.

Torment: Tides of Numenera
Shadowrun: Hong Kong
Serpent in the Staglands
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Dungeons of Aledorn
Spoiler
While I'm really excited about the first two, I'm pretty sceptical about Deliverance, well, delivering.
And the other two seem to be create-your-own party games, which are generally deal breakers for me unless the mechanism is so superflous that it's basically a meaningless tag on (see: Eternity, Pillars of).

It's likely it's not what you were expecting, but I'm still excited, look for the new trailer. They released it back in April not too long ago. This is a thing!? My life is never going to recover.
There are definitely elements of SMT & FE in it, but I feel like we haven't seen enough to get a clear view of that.

It's a Wii U title apparently, which is why I never came across it. More to the point, I don't follow gaming news sites. I get all my gaming relating from the various forums I visit, which are apparently not that bit into JPRGs to mention them offhand in threads.
I'm pretty underwhelmed.

Oh, I'd be super excited otherwise, don't get me wrong. I love both series. It's just on a system I'd never buy, so that kills it for me. ![]()

I'm just waiting for Next Mass Effect, Fallout 4
The current lack of WRPG's on current gen is troubling. I just can't get into the Witcher, Dark Souls is for masochists. Is there anything else coming?
