Yooka-Laylee is an all-new 3D platformer from the creative talent behind the Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country games. We’ve come together to form Playtonic Games and create a spiritual successor to our most cherished work from the past!

Our new heroes, Yooka (the green bloke with no pants) and Laylee (the wisecracking lady-bat with the big nose) were conceptualised from the ground up for stellar platforming gameplay, created by the same character artist behind the rebooted Donkey Kong family and legendary N64 heroes Banjo and Kazooie.

Using an arsenal of special moves like Yooka’s tongue grapple and Laylee’s tactical sonar blast, players will explore – and expand – gorgeous 3D worlds drawn up by esteemed environment artist Steven Hurst (Banjo-Kazooie series, Viva Pinata) and through skill discover the plethora of delicious collectibles hidden within.

Heroes Built for Fun: Our new buddy-duo were dreamed up specifically for entertaining platforming gameplay and exceptional colour coordination. We think we've captured the spirit of our past heroes while introducing our most inventive moves yet.

An Arsenal of Abilities: Sonar blasting, tongue whipping, sky soaring… a move roster built for platforming fun – and unlocked with added freedom. Additionally, there may or may not be a move involving a giant fart bubble.

A Dream Soundtrack: David Wise (Donkey Kong Country) and Grant Kirkhope (Banjo-Kazooie) combine in what's sure to be a melodic masterpiece! Seriously, clean out your ears - they're in for a treat.

Collect-em-up 2.0: A roster of shiny collectibles with gameplay progression at their core (as well as other, more valuable materials). Every collectible type in our new game will expand gameplay in a meaningful way. Yes, we employ the man responsible for DK64's myriad of trinkets, but we've had a stern word. Our main collectible, Pagies, are used to unlock and expand new worlds in Yooka-Laylee.

Expandable Worlds: Experience more of the playgrounds you love by spending collectibles to expand your favourites into bigger, more challenging worlds.

A Cast to Last: A huge cast of memorable characters to meet (or beat) brought to life by the art and audio teams behind Banjo-Kazooie and destined to endure in future games as part of Playtonic Universe. Expect all manner of grunts, squeaks and squawks.

Introducing Play Tonics: Discover these unique gameplay modifiers and use them to customise gameplay to suit your style. Will you run faster, hit harder or fly further? Also, are they named after our studio or vice versa? We'll never know.

Arcade machines: Each world hides at least one secret arcade game encasing old-school gaming goodness. Complete its retro-tastic challenge to claim your Pagie!

If they were going for a Banjo-Kazooie spiritual successor, they sure got the music right tbh.

As of writing this post, they've already gotten ~£900,000 of their £175,000 goal.

I remember Banjo & Kazooie having incredibly wacky dialogue, which made them all the more enjoyable like Conkers, so this is something I'm definitely interested in. I loved Banjo & Kazooie on the N64 :)

I like how in the video they were talking about how they wanted the characters to have abilities analogous to their real life counterparts. Because shitting out grenades is something birds do in real life.

Pleb obviously never played Banjo-Kazooie. This is exciting. Hopefully everything works out for this project.

Never played Banjo-kazooie, but heard many good things about the games. Characters look great, and the concept sound interesting. As with all Kickstarters, I won't be backing it, but if they deliver on their promises, they've got a customer.

Given that Sucker Punch & Naughty Dog are too busy making edgy stories about people being grim, which leaves only Insomniac still doing Ratchet & Clank; I'm excited for it, as it's always nice with some more 3D platformers, my favorite genre when I was young.

I really hope this game will be good.

Perfect Dark has lowkey one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time and I think he composed all of it.

Yooka-Laylee won't sound anything like that but I just needed to share that dopeness.

And real hedgehogs don't roll around at a hundred miles an hour and drop gold rings when they get pricked by a spike. Nor do plumbers spit fireballs when they eat flowers and save princesses from a spiky-turtle-dinosaur thing.

It's all artistic licence for the sake of gameplay. I wouldn't take what they said seriously.

I think the keyword in his observation is "analogous". Meaning the fictional counterpart should be comparable to its real life one. Fortunately, that doesn't mean exact. Mario is obviously a plumber because he's messing with pipes all day. Get it? Cuz-- never mind.

Why are people taking that comment seriously?

Anyway, this better be good because there is a severe lack of 3D platformers and the recent ones haven't been good. Being that they're ex-Rare devs I have faith in them to not become 3.3 Million Dollar Men. Grant Kirkhope doing the music really expands my dong.

Spoiler

Kickstarter projects so far have been very hit and miss. However, you can't deny that it's helped creators to find an audience in niches that AAA gaming left behind and considers obsolete.

We've already seen Kickstarter play a central role in the resurgence of the cRPG (Wasteland 2, Divinity: Original Sin, Pillars of Eternity, Shadowrun: Returns/Dragonfall, Torment: Tides of Numenera). It would be amazing to see this project herald the resurgence of the 3D adventure platformer/collect-a-thon. It's the video game equivalent of Disney movies, to me at least.

Or perhaps it's just nostalgia. Who knows. But I'm really hoping this pulls through and delivers. If nothing else, seeing a successful RareWare v2 can't ever hurt gaming.
