Because it would inevitably consist of the player manually aiming the weapons when sophisticated computer targeting is supposed to exist?

Because it would almost certainly involve the player firing the guns and spewing weapons of mass destruction like candy?

Because the battles would almost certainly involve vehicles of almost incomprehensible expense, worth billions upon billions of credits, being constantly spawned and destroyed by the player willy-nilly like they grow on trees?

Because the likelihood of basic concepts of physics being respected in gameplay that would almost certainly amount to dogfighting in space is pretty much zero?

Because having the protagonist destroy entire fleets with his one ship by being Just That Awesome cripples the logistics of the series and makes the whole concept of building fleets moronic?

You must be fun at parties.

Like some people said there should be a spin-off title dedicated to space combat rather than trying to add it into a RPG title.

Large scale battles? No. But smaller scale can probably work, like having the protagonist to pilot something like a fighter and engage in fighter vs fighter battle. Can be fun, especially in low atmosphere. Though I'd only want them to spend resources on this if they actually have those resources to spare. I would not sacrifice something just to have space battles in a game.

The cutscenes in all 3 Mass Effect games so far already do that, so I don't see the problem there.

I would be thrilled by some freelancer-like space action but only if they find a way to implement it properly (which is not easy to do). Of course, the focus should remain on the squad based ground missions.

Out of complete necessity. Like every other space battle in every other film and video game ever made. You think you can name any work of fiction with 'realistic' space combat? You can't.

This is not necessary.

Some take all that "lore" stuff way too serious.

Not even Bioware takes their own "lore" seriously enough sometimes. *cough* Mass Effect 2 *cough*

I wouldn't want them to add space battles to a remastered trilogy, but I wouldn't say no to them in ME4 as long as they were done right.

For me the main problem of ME3 was not the ending (I even liked it ) then very repetative gameplay , were not a spacce battles , vechicles, puzzles , nothing , then practically entire game was just go from point a to point B , shoot everybody on your way and wait the cut scene.

In next Mass Effect game I want much deeper , much better and much more diverse gaming experience.

+1

would love to have space combat added to ME, mission based, 10-20mins based on level (ie bronze, silver, gold).

Some space battles could be pretty cool. I'm a bit concerned the game could be a bit all over the place though. By the sounds of it they have...

Third person shooter action RPG hybrid gameplay.

A deep, branching, cinematic story, with conversations, many characters, and decisions.

A strategy game where you diversify settlements to improve security, gain resources etc

A driving and exploration game.

A crafting game where you upgrade weapons and Mako.

Should they really add another layer or focus on these other aspects?

I wouldn't be against it. However, I feel like something like this should be tested out maybe on a spin-off game built around it, and depending on how well they can get it to work there, add it into a future addition of the main series.

I'm not really feeling it in a Mass Effect game, but recently I've been thinking a lot about how awesome a modern version of Wing Commander with RPG elements incorporated would be.

I think Star Citizen will be the game you are looking for, even if it won't be a classic RPG.

And If BW really does some space combat they would have to compete with SC, Elite Dangerous and lots of other games comming out in the near future that will all do that better cause it's their main gameplay focus and not just 1% minigame-ish gimmick.

Only in one form, that being the player only being the captain and giving commands to the crew with the execution being played in a scripted, cinematic format reflecting your choices and their outcomes. No direct control of spaceships. If I want a space flight game, I play X³ or wait for Star Citizen.

I think if we were to see space combat in ME, it would be way more arcade than any of those. Elite, etc.are focused on the simulation side, with complex control schemes and quite the learning curve, which wouldn't really fit into the fast paces ME gameplay. Just because you had the MAKO in ME1 doesn't mean you had a driving/acing/tank simulator in there. If you were to climb into a fighter in ME, it would have to be intuitive and interplay well with the ground controls. Think Freelancer, Darkstar One or Batllefront 2.

Thanks for that.  Checked out those games.  SC looks really promising combining combat sim and FPS gameplay.  ED seems a bit slow-paced for my taste after watching some player footage.  Not sure about those big open online worlds though...kind of intimidated by that.
