I usually don't mic up. Mostly because I'm listening to music. Might change with the new dlc if it calls for it to reliably kill dragons, but otherwise I prefer not to use a mic. Been progressing through the game just fine.
Is it ok to play pug as a newbie with no mic

I don't even know the communication shortcuts. I just jump up and down in front of things.

I don´t use mic and it´s completely ok. No way anyone will be annoyed with you if you don´t speak, so fear not ![]()
I occasionally use callouts to thank for revive or to highlight certain enemies to alert others they are in danger(mostly shadows and assassins or final bosses)

I have a mic and rarely use it. The "oh you're a girl" response when I do talk bugs me. Nobody notices, though, because most people never talk.
A GIRL!?!?!? ![]()

LIES! There are no girls on the internet. Only men and men pretending to be girls.A GIRL!?!?!?
Edit:
@ParthianShotX
Seriously, you still get that response? You should join the PC master race, we have evolved beyond the need for gender.

Pugging without mic is obviously OK and it might actually be the standard for most players. Though I think it is of one's interest to make some friends in this game, so that you don't need to pug/search for random lobbies/deal with the matchmaking/submit yourself to BS. Also, one doesn't need a mic to make a few friends.

I usually play without a mic. Somehow that was less of a problem in ME3 for some reason.
There are some situations I'd really want to reply to someone like one guy asking me once how does my reaver look different (the alternate upgraded outfit) and after not replying he was like... okay, you don't want to answer. And I am like... I want to answer, just can't. ![]()
