Why do party members say they can't do something that they just did?

In all my playthroughs, one thing has always bugged me about party members. When you tell them (or your own character) to turn off or turn on a sustained mode, they respond with a negative despite just doing it. Like I tell my character to turn off dueling, and they respond with "I cannot do that"... But you just did, idiot. Or telling Alistair to turn off threaten, he'll respond with "nope" right after doing it. Why do they do this? It's not a big deal by any stretch, but I just find it stupid.

I've clocked in well over 200 hours in Origins and have never heard them say things like that. If they don't have the stamina or proper equipment for an ability, maybe, but not randomly, like when telling them to turn off an ability or something.

Well it just happened again quite blantently. Zevran went down which turned off momentum and duelist, so I made him turn them back on once he was up again. His response was to turn on duelist with no problem, but he used the "No no, I think not." voice clip as he did it.

The only time I've ever heard that is when you set them to do something they can't do, like pick a lock or disable a trap that they aren't skill at? Never heard them do that with abilities or equipment, sounds more like a bug than anything else?

It sounds like there is definitely something weird going on with your game.  I have not seen that occur in any of my playthroughs.

Is it possible you have any mods that affect their ambient comments (not banter)?

I have the PS3 version of the Ultimate Edition, so it definitely isn't that. And it's not recent, I've done over a dozen playthroughs, and this has been the case since the first sustained I ever got for anyone on my first playthough. I never thought anything of it because of that.

Hmm..  That is strange.  Another bug to add to the list of bugs Bioware decided to leave unfixed when they abandoned DA:O I guess.
