[/list]3.      Problem Details

My problem is that in or around the start of my game, the system will freeze and give me a blue screen, then restart my machine.  This happens at multiple different locations.  It has happened as the intro logo video. At the intro menu screen, waiting for the network to connect.  I have also gotten to the cutscene where right after confirming your character, shepard wakes up and Miranda is telling him to calm down.  The graphics will skip and freeze up while the audio continues to play.

As I said the problem occurs at multiple occassions.  Upon first starting it up, I made it thru the intro scene where the normandy is attacked and into character creation/import.  I confirmed my character and upon seeing the first cutscene with miranda, the game glitched at the same point 3-4 times.  After that, I can no longer get past the intro menu without the game crashing.

I have taken many steps to try and fix the problem myself.  I updated my video drivers, but those caused some major issues in my system and I was unable to even make it to my desktop properly.  I then removed the "new" drivers and reverted back to a more stable version that I know works fine. (My current version listed above).  Initally after my first install, the game would throw and error immediatly at start-up, and instead of saying "Mass Effect" in the taskbar it would say "Unreal Engien 3..."  After a re-install, I got past that and the game launnched as normal.  I played thru the inital intro and made it to the character confirmation screen, using my imported ME1 character.  After confirming my character I got to the first inital cutscene, and has been been getting steadily worse with each launch.  I hope this is enough info to help me figure out my problem.  Thank you for your time.

e.     Why? As much as possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps?

Can you post the BSOD stop code? That would help narrow down the problem. If it automatically restarts you can disable that-

My Computer>Properties. Advanced>Startup and Recovery>Settings uncheck 'Automatically Restart' >Ok.

Play again and wait till you get another BSOD then copy down the error code.

If "new" video card drivers actually impede normal desktop operation then that might indicate something more serious which has nothing to do with the game itself. It could be that your card is failing or your PSU. But again, sharing the stop code will at least help in narrowing down the BSOD trigger.

Now that I'm actively trying to get a Stop code, the game isn't throwing me to a BSoD. Instead, it is currently loading up and graphically glitching at main menu. It then freezes the video and continues the sound for about 5-10 sec. After that, the sound stops and repeats itself over and over as if caught in a broken loop. I have to manually restart my machine when this occurs. I will keep trying for a stop code, but for right now, it crashes and doesn't go anywhere.

I'm having an issue with Mass Effect 2 crashing as well. It seems to only be at one spot, since it hasn't crashed before that and I can't get past this spot because it keeps crashing. It's during the mission to the first colony, after you open the door and face the first two security mechs. As soon as you kill them both, I'm assuming a cut scene is supposed to start, but instead the screen just goes blank and the computer freezes. Any way to fix this?

My comp specs, if needed, are:

Windows XP SP2
ATI Radeon 4850
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz
4GB DDR2 RAM
more than enough hard drive space

I finally got that BSoD.

The Problem seesm to be caused by the following file: nv4_disp

The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop.

Tech Info:

*** Stop : 0x000000EA (0x886F4020, 0x89103BD0, 0xB84FBCBC, 0x00000001)

Seems that its my card? I've updated the drivers fully on both my chipset and graphics card, as well as sound, and codexs. I hope this helps figure something out.

That seems to have fixed it. Good thing I didn't need those codec packs anyway since I started using VLC player. Never got around to removing them. At least I can play this game now.

Glad to hear it Deadslayer - consider going into that thread I linked and writing out the problem you experienced and what you did to fix it (specifically- uninstalling the codec packs) to best help anyone else who might be experiencing similar issues and will never see that thread or have their issue lost in pages of other peoples threads.

Messe105, that specific BSOD error, " nv4_disp The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop" is directly related to the display driver. I would suggest going into windows in safe mode and uninstalling your display driver. Downloading the latest one from Nvidia or last supported display driver from the card manufacturer (Asus, BFG etc etc) then reboot back into windows normally, install the new display driver - reboot and try the game. It is vital that you remove all instances of the old driver so safemode is highly recommended. You can also use a thrid party program, DriveSweeper to finalize the deletion of any Nvidia stragglers before rebooting and reinstalling the new display drivers. Also bear in mind if you have an nForce board, uninstall those and download the latest version for your motherboard.

On the off chance this fails. There is a chance that your card could be on it's last legs, however remote that may be, there's always a chance.

Another, more drastic measure, would be reinstalling the OS. But only if everything else has failed and it's not necessarily a fix.

I had the same problem. Turning off AA solved it.
