Hi. :)

It doesn't seem we can do polls anymore. (Or can we and I just missed it?) Anyway, I have a question about demographics: have the Choose Your Own Adventure kids have grown up and want CYOA "movies" (aka video games)? Or, to ask differently, what would "having our choices matter" look like in-game?

For the Dragon Age franchise, which statement(s) to you most agree with:

1-I want to READ about how the world has changed as a result of my actions / learn about my party members' character (example: codex entries / war table missions). Click the "Like This" button on this post to vote for Option 1; you can vote for one, some, or all!

2-I want to HEAR about how the world has changed as a result of my actions / learn about my party members' character (example: ambient dialogue of non-party NPCs / party banter). Click the "Like This" button on this post to vote for Option 2; you can vote for one, some, or all!

3-I want to TALK about how the world has changed as a result of my actions / learn about my party members' character (example: player-initiated discussions with NPCs / party members). Click the "Like This" button on this post to vote for Option 3; you can vote for one, some, or all!

4-I want to SEE how the world has changed as a result of my actions / learn about my party members' character (example: like more plague rats in Dishonored or PC appearance changes in Fable III. Or romance sex scenes  / cut scenes in general.). Click the "Like This" button on this post to vote for Option 4; you can vote for one, some, or all!

5-I want to EXPERIENCE how the world has changed as a result of my actions / learn about my party members' character (example: branching paths based on my choices where different play-throughs have mutually exclusive quests in completely different places against completely different enemies with no way to do the stuff I missed. Thanks PhroXenGold!). Click the "Like This" button on this post to vote for Option 5; you can vote for one, some, or all!

I'm going to post these four five options in subsequent posts to this one. Please "like" the one(s) that apply to you. If you have a suggestion for other options, please comment and I'll update this.

Again, if you agree with multiple (or all) of these options, do NOT comment, just like the applicable one(s). ;)

Working with what I've got, sorry.

So, if you don't like the options offered...what would 'having our choices matter' look like? I'm looking for concrete suggestions / examples that the devs could implement in-game.

See, OP? Even when someone tries to be constructive, we still get unhelpful people committed to ruining the conversation...

As for my vote, I would say all of the above. But if I absolutely had to pick, I would choose #4 without doubt. Changes in-world need to be seen/felt to be meaningful. If the change isn't tangible, there was no change for all intents and purposes. This means it should impact gameplay directly. An example of this being done poorly would be Skyrim's invincible NPCs, because Bethesda didn't want us to accidentally shut ourselves out of plotline. This, of course, removes one of the major motivations for replays. An on-screen warning (a la Morrowind) is a happy medium between holding the player's hand and allowing them the freedom to change the game world.

While I do enjoy reading the consequences to my actions, I think talking and seeing those consequences in action make them more impact-full. Only reading about them adds a sense of detachment; while seeing them first hand adds a sense that YOU did this and now here is the results. When you are able to get the player to feel responsible and emotionally attached then you have succeeded in making a meaningful experience.

Yep!

Think of the Crestwood demo at PAX-East. What inspired so many was that it appeared your actions would have real and lasting consequences on the game world. And it's something which is totally believable within the context of the game's narrative; the Inquisition is a force for change (so we're told) and the things they do would necessarily impact the world in a real and tangible way.

Who knows, I might! But in the mean time, Bioware can benefit from our constructive and descriptive feedback. :)

Awesome context, thanks!

Can you do my a favor and like the posts for option 3 and option 4? I'm trying to have Bioware see the numbers of what we as players mean by "having our choices matter". Then hopefully they can design DA4 such that that requirement is addressed. As it stands, that requirement can be taken a lot of different ways; I want to help Bioware out by communicating what it means concretely (and voting on it democratically  ;) ).

The beauty of this not-quite-poll <_< (why can't we do polls anymore??) is that you can "vote" for one, some, or all the above. B)

Option 2

Option 3

Option 4

Thanks xkg. The only options I have in the Post Options area (right sidebar) are:

  •     Enable emoticons
  •     Enable signature
  •     Follow this topic

So either I'm blind :P or maybe I don't have the coolness other people have? Anyway, thanks for working with me as I make due with what I've got. Hopefully this will help Bioware out by clarifying our requests.

^ Bah, just checked it and it looks like it doesn't work here in this part of the forum. It works in the Off-Topic section.

Anyway, I would chose option 4.

Hakkon does introduce dialgoue that talks about your current events which is good. Trouble is I wish we didnt get big world altering choices because we can never see the affects in the next game because people do things differently.

Off topic is probably where it belongs, too often in early bug chasing one could get confused, as it is more of a management tool, not technical.  None the less, I agree on the value of their use and If you start one invite folks to participate via a link -Be creative and I'll bet management listens -be fools not to.

  • Bring out the management problems and what has been/is being done to improve overall quality.  Discussion
  • Bring out the character controller -do a little research first and talk about the shortcoming and rate how folks miss the desired behaviors etc.
  • Bring out the Frostbite development system -Talk about how the system changes the game development paradigm
  • Bring out the shortcomings of QA and the cost of doing it so poorly
  • Bring out the plot holes and get some of the topic authors that are writers and game developers to help.

Just a few thoughts to get you started, if needed

I agree that retcon is always a concern. Case in point: OGB...if you didn't make the deal with Morrigan in the first place then how will the OG (minus B ) get to its...er..."destination" aka

Spoiler
?

Out of curiosity, what are people's thoughts on the timing of seeing the effects of our decisions? Inquisition makes me think of ME2, where the impact of most of our major decisions aren't really seen until ME3 (e.g. whether or not you tell Mordin to save the info for the krogan cure, you don't see a major impact for that decision until a game later)

Do you think it works in a DA game to have the major impact of a decision show up in the next game? Does it work if we have a different PC each time, or only when we keep the same PC across games (like in ME)? Or should we at least see an inkling of the 'impact' of a decision show up within the game the decision is made? (this might be something big, like extra cutscenes, or small, like seeing certain changes in the environment reflect the decisions)
